It is, now do something about your understanding of ellipses.

>> No.2371590

We already had this thread.

Conclusion: do what sounds best.

Bonus: do something about your understanding of ellipses.

Wrong.

Do what is grammatically clean, easy and logical; ditch the fucking oxford comma and use a colon or a semicolon to introduce the list of guests.

a colon or semicolon introduces an unnatural pause
"we invited: the strippers, jfk, and stalin." implies an unusual manner of speaking

You placed it in the wrong place.

Just use the oxford comma. I used it when taking all of my tests and what not. Didn't get an error whiling using it on my essays.

My point is that the second sentence erroneously implies that a comma is grammatically capable of introducing a list.

What do you mean it's unnatural to pause before reciting a list?

Use a fucking semi-colon if it bothers you so much, more flighty than colons and it's acceptable here since there is already a colon in the sentence (I assume it's the same sentence because there is no capitalisation of 'we').

>> No.2372000

I thought the Oxford comma has been officially abandoned by Oxford.

but I still use it, anyway. It just makes more sense.

No, fuck the oxford comma. It's completely useless, lazy and needlessly clutters up the sentence.

Only pretentious cunts (oblivious to their straining, humiliating efforts to appear intelligent and quirky) would defend it.

Make the change, anon.

You can do it.

I believe in you.

>> No.2372028

Why would anyone not use the oxford comma? It prevents any possible confusion, and I have no idea how a single extra comma clutters up a sentence.

>> No.2372031

I don't use it.

Because I'm studying at Cambridge and it feels like a betrayal.

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?
I've seen those English dramas too
They're cruel
So if there's any other way
To spell the word
It's fine with me, with me
Why would you speak to me that way
Especially when I always said that I
Haven't got the words for you
All your diction dripping with disdain
Through the pain
I always tell the truth
Who gives a fuck about an Oxford climber?
I climbed to Dharamsala too
I did
I met the highest lama
His accent sounded fine
To me, to me
Check your handbook
It's no trick
Take the chapstick
Put it on your lips
Crack a smile
Adjust my tie
Know your boyfriend, unlike other guys
Why would you lie about how much coal you have?
Why would you lie about something dumb like that?
Why would you lie about anything at all?
First the window, then it's to the wall
Lil' Jon, he always tells the truth
Check your passport
It's no trick
Take the chapstick
Put it on your lips
Crack a smile
Adjust my tie
Know your butler, unlike other guys
Why would you lie about how much coal you have?
Why would you lie about something dumb like that?
Why would you lie about anything at all?
First the window, then it's through the wall
Why would you tape my conversations?
Show your paintings
At the United Nations
Lil' Jon, he always tells the truth

The Oxford comma is gateway punctuation of the worst kind; It's a bad habit, a clusterfuck of elitism, and leads to use of more obscure punctuation to get that elitist fix: these are attempts to compensate for intellectual weakness by adding in excessive punctuation* conventions and CLUTTER. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the comma itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad...

*Like so.
