Hey /lit/,

My grandfather's second wife just died. She didn't really like me too much, but one of her daughter's just asked me to find a poem to be read at her funeral.

What should I pick? Her family is 99% red neck country religious folk. I have to be sincere about this, but at the same time I'd like to pick something with an undertone. (picture highly related, she hated Bukowski. But does he have any poems suitable for a funeral?)

PS: This is very serious. I'm not too familiar with poetry, and will most likely pick something from this thread assuming we get something usable in here.

The Wasteland.

Make sure you glare disapprovingly around the room at the PARTICULARLY RELIGIOUS FOLK as you utter "This is how the world ends...."

I'd favor Whitman; As I Ponder'd in Silence might work, To Him That Was Crucified might match your idea if they aren't especially clever, Not Heaving From My Ribb'd Breast Only, O Captain! My Captain is a dirge but doesn't fit, When Lilacs... is long, but might work, Whispers of Heavenly Death would definitely work, and so would Darest Thou Now O Soul.

Im sure they would appreciate a full reading of Horatius, acted out triumphantly.

Consider also Poe's "The Sleeper"

it's alright, if you think you're superior for applying arbitrary constructs to "texts" instead of actually reading them, good for you. the progenitors of lit theory are well and good, but the watered-down bullshit that's infiltrating college english courses is just posturing.

Caught 'em wit an uppercut, kicked 'em in his ass
Sent him on his way cause I ain't for that talk!
No trips to the county, I ain't for that walk!
We split like two pins at the end of a lane
We'll knock out your spotlight and put an end to your vain
Put a DTP pendant at the end of yo chain
Then put the booty of a Swisha at the end of a flame

HEY! You want what wit me?!
I'm a tell you one time, don't FUCK wit me!
GET DOWN! Cause I ain't got nothing to lose
I'm having a bad day, don't make me take it out on you!

GET DOWN! Cause I ain't got nothing to lose

Man! Cause I don't wanna do that
I want to have a good time and enjoy my Jack
Sit back and watch the women get drunk as hell
So I can wake up in the morning wit a story to tell
I know it's been a lil while since I been out the house!
But now I'm here, you wanna stand around

I can't hear nothing you saying or spitting, so wassup!
Can't you see we in the club?! Man shut the fuck up!!

best funeral poem ever

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

The lame wolf walks the world
One paw treads the sky
The others pace the earth
He walks backwards
Erasing each pawprint before him
He walks half-blind
With terrible bloodshot eyes
Full of dead stars and living parasites
He walks with a millstone
Forced round his neck
An old tin can
Tied to his tail
He walks without resting
Out of one circle of dog-heads
Into another
He walks with the twelve-faced sun
On a tongue which lolls to the ground
