I've read the entire Morgaine cycle (4 books) and I felt really blueballed at the end. Morgaine and Vanye never do anything other than a single chaste kiss, and then the story stops. I find that CJ Cherryh has a writing problem where her stories don't end, they stop. There's no real conclusion, they just ride off into the sunset midway through an adventure and then there's no more pages to the book and you're left holding your dick in your hands wondering what the hell just happened. Fortress series is the same way. It's not difficult to read in terms of its language or the content of individual scenes, it just doesn't give you a lot of exposition to ease into the setting, so bigger questions about what is going on, or how things work in the setting, take a while for you to work out on your own. I find a lot of people who drop Malazan expect books to be more prompt and direct about explaining things to the audience, but Malazan doesn't bother.

For example, you will have, at best, a vague idea of how magic works for several books before you get anything close to a lore dump on it, only to later have that understanding pulled out form under you later.

Dennis L. McKiernan's "Faery" series (5 books) is founded entirely on a more mature - though not subversively edgy or anything - retelling of classic fairy tales involving princes and princesses and suchlike. I would have loved to have kept them in my library but for the fact that McKiernan has this intensely obnoxious tendency to sprinkle gratuitous foreign - or fictional - languages throughout the text at every opportunity to replace a common word like say "oui" or "nest ce pas" or his horrendous conlangs in the Iron Tower: "my buccoes". He also has this tic of constantly phrasing sentences in "adverb-noun-verb" format like "Onward they rode", oftentimes in multiple instances in the same paragraph. These phony folksy archaicisms are so damned exasperating that no matter how good the books are I can't ever imagine reading them again. I'd only recommend him if you can tolerate that sort of spiel because I can't.

Lois McMaster Bujold is also pretty famous for writing effective romances in her fantasy novels.

The Changespell series by Doranna Durgin features a female horse falling in love with her rider after she's forcibly transformed into a human during a spell gone wrong.

You might also enjoy Orson Scott Card's "Enchantment", which involves a sort of isekai from 20th century America into 9th century Kievan Rus' in a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

The Fionavar Tapestry certainly has a way with romantic relationships though they are quite bizarre.

It's a decent series. The first 6 are from ok to really good with a couple highly entertaining,l. The mystery is wrapped up in the 6th one. The 7th is boring slop, but he is advancing in age, so it's understandable.

QRD - a statue of an alien is found on Iapetus. Humanity hasn't found any lmao up to that point, so it's shocking. A mission is organized and flown with the purpose of finding the makers of the statue. They find other monuments in different solar systems. The mystery has a satisfying answer.

Honestly he doesn't have a single bad book, just a few that are weaker than the others. The best place to start is probably his Drenai series with Legend, but if you want something shorter than Rigante is a good place and if you want a standalone there's plenty of those too such as Dark Moon or Echoes of the Great Song. He's got some that are more historical thaothers like his Greek or Troy series as well and those that riff on myths like stuff about King Arthur and Jon Shannow set in a post-apocalyptic setting and is more of a western. He's even got two present day setting novels, one of which was published after his death.

The Well of Stars (its direct sequel) is one of the best sci-fi novels I have ever touched. I would strongly suggest finding a copy of the short story "Mere" before reading Well of Stars.
If you wish to continue reading beyond, I would read "The Greatship", a short story collection, and then hold off on the Memory of Sky trilogy. The trilogy and Dragons of Marrow seem to set up the finale moreso than being their own thing.
There is also SEVERAL other short stories that take place in the Greatship 'world'.

The main culture definitely has meso ‘vibes’ but a lot of the substance includes Roman, Chinese, and Renaissance Euro influence among others. Inca too.
The gist:

>Said empire, based in a metropolis called Osrakum, has a God-Emperor.
>Since the Emperor is dying the nobles are all summoned back home, including protagonist’s dad.
So the main deal - especially in book one - is our relatively ‘normal’ (by our standards) main character getting dragged to Osrakum and having to adapt to and learn to navigate the very dangerous / byzantine imperial society he’s been insulated from all this time.
High points are:

I recently read all 6 Old Kingdom books + the short stories. Here's my shit opinions: (Don't read if avoiding any spoilers but I'll try and be concise
Sabriel - Very rough with a deus ex machina ending. The premise is interesting and the characters well-written which is what keeps ya reading
Lirael - This is most people's favorite book, and I can see why. It's over 700 pages so there's lots to sink your teeth into. The Library of the Clayr is arguably the most interesting place in the Old Kingdom. Definitely a stand-out
Abhorsen - Finishes up the series very well. There's several very off-putting otherworldly encounters and the last-minute saves actually work this time. Definitely should finish the series if you've come this far.
The Creature in the Case - This is book #3.5 which bridges Abhorsen and Goldenhand. This book is pure fucking ADRENALINE. Nix never wrote such a pure action story set in the Old Kingdom before or since. A must read even if you aren't interested in the rest of the series.
Clariel - this is book #4 but it's a prequel set 600 years in the past. For the first 1/3 or so it's kind of a slice-of-life showcasing the culture of the Old Kingdom, and I kind of like that. The last 2/3 are a character case of Clariel, how she is an outcast and her ensuing downfall. I really liked this book and it might be my favorite of the whole series just in terms of pure comfiness.
Goldenhand - Book #5 set directly right after The Creature in the Case. I won't say alot about this book but it really is very superficial and I didn't enjoy it at all. Not sure what Nix was going for or why he wrote such a mediocre book after having so much time to sit and think up a decent story. So far this is most current of the Old Kingdom books (as far as chronologically)
Terciel and Elinor - This is book #6, set a generation before Sabriel, and is about her parents and how they met. This one is a mixture of every book that came before it. Slice of life, lore, relationships, magic, Abhorsens, journeys into Death, and Mogget. If you've made it this far, why not? It's worth a read
The rest of the Old Kingdom books are short stories. There's Dr. Crake Crosses the Wall which you can read on the Old Kingdom website for free. It's pretty good. There's To Hold A Bridge which is in a short story collection of the same name. The whole collection was surprisingly good and also include a short story set in the Shade's Children universe which is also worth a read if you're into YA science fiction. Would recommend. There's also a little known short story published in the 15th Anniversary Edition of Sabriel called One Wyverly Summer. In this story Sabriel battles a free magic creature that strays too close to Wyverly School while she is a student there. Very rote and doesn't flesh out any lore or anything but might as well eh? I'm hoping Nix will write another Old Kingdom book set after Goldenhand that doesn't suck. Enjoy Redwall anon

Its just fun to read, i want see what happens next, i like all the characters and tgey have a good gang vibe, the romance isnt over the top and is only mentioned every now and then, i also like how the characters get older as the books go on and can follow what they are up to, for whats its worth i am a casual reader though so i dont make graphs of the lore or timelines, i read and have a great time, dont want it to be over
