Tolkien was never the norm for any writer. He became the titan of fantasy he is precisely because of how exceptional he was. And neither is Brandon Sanderson typical for modern fantasy, which again is why he is so notable. If you want to make a point about the genre you need to use generic examples. The word "genre" and "generic" share the same root for a reason.

Somebody like Raymond E. Feist, L.E. Modesitt, or maybe Brent Weeks would be emblematic of the generic fantasy author. There are many others you could name who are comparable, and that's the entire point.

I've actually read all those 3 books and, to tell the truth.... I actually really liked it.
The first book was middling, I didn't particularly liked too much the protagonist and REALLY disliked Quentin. By the time I got to the hangman I said "Why the hell isn't this guy the protagonist?". He literally carried alone the first book for me.
Second book was much better, more characters introduced, some very likable, and the story moved along the way. It was a very enjoyable read. The reveal of the villain was good, he was an enjoyable evil trickster antagonist.
Third book felt like railroading through the planned conclusion, literally at a certain point, and after that I swear I could feel the author complaining about it. Still, I really liked the new few characters and especially the conclusion, and made me want to read more about this author, which it rarely happens, especially indie/non-professional ones.
If you decide to read it and you're thinking of dropping it, wait for the hangman to show up before doing so.
Still haven't completely figured *SPOILER ALERT FOR THE ENDING* who the little girl was at the end? Was she the reincarnation of Eostrix sister?
I have considered mailing the author and asking him, but felt too timid to do it.

The pacing completely changes, first trilogy has an almost breakneck pace but Books of the South has the party go to Not-India (which was the style at the time, a lot of fantasy series where set in fantasy middle east) and the pacing is really slow and kind of boring, Glittering Stone goes back to being kino and leans HARD on the Darker aspect of Dark Fantasy.

I don't understand why people get pissed at Sanderson as someone who read Tolkien but never Sanderson. The worldbuilding and complex systems in his books are impressive from what I have heard. Most SFF writers aren't on the literary levels of Tolkien,Pratchett,Wolfe or Dan Simmons. Even acclaimed classic writers like Niven/Pournelle, Asimov, and Clarke (and contemporary classics like Cixin Liu,Alistair Reynolds and Stephenson) are more carried by executing on the complex concepts in their writing, the characterization and prose ranges from decent to mediocre usually and the former can be outright bad. It was pretty standard fantasy to me. I haven't read it in probably 10 years, but... it didn't stand out to me. I had already read most everything? I can see the influence it had on fantasy, but going backwards... eh.
