Hi /lit/, sorry I had to make this thread (yes i've read the sticky), but does having a keyboard on an e-reader really make a difference? I was looking to buy one and a friend told me having the keyboard was really convenient, but I was unsure if I wanted to shell out the extra $60 for it since the cheapest Kindle is $80 and the one with the keyboard is $140. Otherwise I was just going to get the cheapest Kindle. Or if there is any other e-reader that you guys would recommend, I'd would also be appreciative

The keyboard is not entirely useful unless you move up into the DX model I should think. My recommendation is go with the kindle tough for 99 dollars because it feels more natural than the base model.

Just get a touchscreen ereader, which pops up a keyboard onscreen when needed. The physical keyboard is a waste of space.

It just depends on how you feel about using touchscreen keyboards. I hate how slow and imprecise they are, so I ponied up for a keyboard Kindle. My experience has been very nice, but yeah, for the most part, you're barely touching the keyboard. Navigating books with lots of footnotes or weird words, however, are where the keypad shines. Really fast and precise controls.

Nook Simple Touch is also $99, does the Kindle Touch win between those 2?

Yes. The Kindle is a very pleasant experience

Kindle's are awesome, especially if you pirate ebooks.
I have the one in OPic, but I almost never use the keyboard. The Touch should be fine.

Also, go download Calibre. It's a program that converts and formats ebooks. Extra awesome if you know regular expressions.

I just got the Kindle Touch, and so far, it's been enjoyable, but the battery is shittier than I expected.

brightness make a HUGE difference on my ipad...difference between 3 hours and 10

OP - would say go to local best buy and see if you like scrolling with bottons

typing wise, i would be its just as good as an ipad - and you probably won't type too much

like mentioned before, keypad is waste of space, with smaller bottons than touchscreen will have for keys

Not OP, but thanks for this as I also have a kindle and pirate many an e-book.

Also, I agree with the others about the keyboard being a waste of space (if you don't mind touchscreens, of course).
