how old were you when you realized shakespeare was genuinely awful, completely trash marvel-tier sloppa for the time, and hasn't gotten any better since? I was maybe 20 or so, fresh out of high school when I realized that my impressions of romeo & juliet, hamlet, etc weren't based on being frustrated in class but based on their stupid writing.

I don't understand the language, and I wish the characters would talk normal.

>This King Shakspeare, does not he shine, in crowned sovereignty, over us all, as the noblest, gentlest, yet strongest of rallying-signs; indestructible; really more valuable in that point of view than any other means or appliance whatsoever? We can fancy him as radiant aloft over all the Nations of Englishmen, a thousand years hence. From Paramatta, from New York, wheresoever, under what sort of Parish-Constable soever, English men and women are, they will say to one another: "Yes, this Shakspeare is ours; we produced him, we speak and think by him; we are of one blood and kind with him."

Don't make the mistake of convincing yourself you're too smart to appreciate someone scholars and top-tier writers have appreciated for centuries. Have the good sense to say to yourself, "I wasn't ready," and try again, or try again years later.

I'm reading King Lear right now. It's a great play. There are elements which are lacking when we consider what standards we might have for a modern story with these elements, but those standards exist because King Lear, Agamemnon, and various other plays have existed all these years.

Shakespeare is a master of the English language, even by modern standards. You simply have to increase your vocabulary and your familiarity with Middle English.

Race has nothing to do with it. If you make the mistake of believing it does, you're making a similar mistake to OP.
