This guy writes some of the worst dialogue ever and THE worst dialogue in a fantasy book that I've ever read. Why does /lit/ like him?

We don't. Genrefags are the minority.

I don't know about his older books, but I read Tress and it was alright. I like seeing nerds succeed in life, specially when they are not ashamed of their nerdiness.

Steve King is worse at dialogues than him.

Just cause I like him doesn't mean he's a good writer

I wonder if he's as kind as he looks.

I legitimately have no clue why any of them think Sanderson of all people could finish ASOIAF, he doesn't have any of Martin's dialogue, character work, or story telling skills and Martin does the exact opposite of what he does in terms of worldbuilding.
I think it has to due with how Sanderson seethed about how Martin was chosen to write for Elden Ring despite not knowing anything about Fromsoft properties.
>>23303586
Only retards think this. We know he's already gotten some rough character arcs finished for a long time now, even if he didn't put specifics down its not hard to make some logical conclusions as to what has to happen for certain endpoints to be achieved with satisfactory conclusions.

Well, when that one seething Wired journalist who was jealous of Sanderson's success tried to write a hit piece on him, failed, and got lambasted by all across social media for his shitty article, Sanderson urged everyone to leave him alone and that he wasn't mad at the article. So, Brandon the Generous is forgiving and doesn't hold grudges at least. Very Christlike. Joseph Smith would be proud.

I honestly thought that article was fairer than you're giving it credit for. Sanderson's writing is mediocre even by modern fantasy's already very low bar and the reason why he's able to produce so much of it is because he doesn't put much thought into it. The man is clearly a mega-autist and that's really what's behind most of his obsessions with things like "hard magic systems", which has been a terrible influence on the literary quality of the genre as a whole as it's redirected the focus away from storytelling and symbolism toward self-indulgent worldbuilding. But, all that aside, he is clearly a standup dude and I don't think the article ever implied otherwise.

>> No.23303926

Give it to me straight, is that meme image accurate when it says that he uses little fairy things or whatever that say what a character's mental state is? Haven't read his books (not much of a fantasy fan). but that sounds so hilariously autistic I can almost respect it.

I'm not a fan of him but I've read like three or four of his books, you're making him sound worse than what he is. he writes good fantasy and only good fantasy. Not great or excellent just good. like on a 10 point scale his work firmly falls in the 7 position, nothing more and nothing less. It's just fun geeky fantasy, with good action, really nerdy magic, decent plots, and some decent worldbuilding. I wouldn't recommend any of his books on my own but if someone asked me for a specific Sanderson book I'd tell them to pick up Mistborn. Mistborn was cooler than I thought it would be.

Not who you're replying to but I randomly picked up what are considered his 'lesser' books (Skyward, Warbreaker) and found them shockingly awful and childish. I'd be willing to give Mistborn or Stormlight a chance even if I wouldn't be expecting something great.

they will hate anyone that is popular or that don't try to be "high" literature on principle

Who has a checkerboard floor in their house? Anyways, he didn't fuck up the last Wheel of Time books too bad but the dialogue and characterization felt more comic book than Jordan had been writing them. Mat was especially flanderized. They could've hired worse for the job. I still think Sando has to be a mason to have gotten the position. Also, Joseph Smith was a mason as well and Mormonism couldn't be faker and gayer.

I have read mistborn trilogy and didn't like it very much. Bland characters and plot. But one thing he is good at is hard magic systems. He is a physics major and knows that if there was some magic system, how would humans try to optimize it for warfare.
