The context of the novel and the film imply the latter, since firstly Bateman fucks the prostitutes in HIS apartment, and secondly that Bateman engages in performative consumerism and commodity fetishism in the same ways Chunko Pop collectors do. Bateman's tastes are normally towards luxury items, anything that demonstrate can his wealth, rather than cheaper infantilising nostalgia toys, but arguably it could be analogous to Bateman's collections of Huey Lewis and the News, Whitney Houston, or the later Genesis albums, which is appropriate since in this moment in the movie he's blasting Sussudio by Genesis on the speakers.

Seriously though, what do you mean by hoarding? We're pushing over 2,000 books in the house, but our intent was to build a family library that covers a wide array of subjects for the kids. It worked, although I'm realizing we're still missing a fair amount of books and subject matters, and that seriously helps when you're home schooling.
We relied heavily on the library while growing up, but the last decade has been poor management. We both disagree with much of the public library's curation decision, especially after seeing Jules Verne removed in favor of some no-name hacks with no discernable talents outside of making a lot of noise.

i mean hoarding in the literal mental illness sense. buying books of no worth to you (or frankly anyone) just because they're cheap, to fill some psychological void or whatever, and not being able to stop even after you have no space for them. there's nothing wrong with having a nice home library of curated titles of course, no matter how many there are.

Hey man, nothing wrong with creating a library for yourselves and the kids. (I'm one of the people you were responding to)

I really do consider it hoarding for hoardings sake if there's no goal outside of it. But you clearly have a goal in mind. I'm sure a lot of those are read too? I came off a bit strong there but it's also understandable not having read the whole collection. (especially when you consider shit books you're gifted from time to time)

You're both okay, I get what you mean. I just feel bad for people who are like that. I didn't really take offense, I was just curious about if the "hoarding" comment was actual hoarders or if it was a rhetorical statement about anti-materialism or such. A good chunk of the books we have are read, I have a lot of family members who have varying interests. Oddly, most of the unread ones are the "newer" fictional stuff (Young Merlin / Lost Years of Merlin, Artemis Fowl, etc.) whereas the good stuff looks pretty clearly read (Bradbury's, Verne, etc.)

The stay of execution, you mean? I don't buy for a second that a man killed by robbers doesn't ever lose hope, just because people try wild shit when they're cornered doesn't mean they haven't given up in their heart "which makes it ten times easier to die"
He didn't even die, his certainty of death was much less than the hypothetical man whose throat has already been cut to whom he alludes.
When I read him on man's existential horror in fiction, I read him as a guy who's been through it and is out the other side feeling compassion for everyone else still in it. This is implying he's STILL in denial about death, STILL unwilling to make peace with absolute mortality. And he has this outlook even as a devout Christian with a promise of a just and blissful resurrection awaiting him. It's disappointing.
