Nevertheless such, I am persuaded, is the case. Hitler is not a straightforward, simple, fire-eating, true-blue, sabre-rattling, moustachioed puppet at all. I do not think that if Hitler had his way he would bring the fire and the sword across otherwise peaceful frontiers. He would, I am positive, remain peacefully at home, fully occupied with the internal problems of the Dritte Reich. And as regards, again, the vexed question of the 'antisemitic' policy of his party, in that also I believe Hitler himself—once he had obtained power—would show increasing moderation and tolerance. In the Dritte Reich, conceived by Hitler, that great jewish man of science, Einstein, would, I think, be honoured as he deserves. On the other hand, those destructive financial buffoons, the Schlarek Brothers (who played such colossal Capone-like pranks, turning upside-down the municipal world of Berlin—preparing the way indeed for the first great nationalsocialist successes in that city—divine rogues as they no doubt are and all that, but politically a first-class nuisance) they would, I imagine, be asked to go to Chicago—in the sense of Go to Bath! or something of that sort.
