YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT COMPREHEND THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND THE CHARACTER HOLDEN CAULFIELD.

HOLDEN CAULFIELD WANTED TO MATURE, TO "TRANSCEND" HIS TRAUMATIZED ADOLESCENCE, BUT DID NOT KNOW HOW.

hey cool someone disagrees with op and thinks he sucks because of it so edgy teen. also way to totally ignore op's question so you can say just say something shitty and unhelpful.

also lol at calling Holden traumatized.

If you haven't read Ender's Game, that's a classic coming of age (I'll assume that's a genre you are kinda talking about, also called Bildungsroman).
Also good is Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Parker (one of my fav books ever).
Great Expectations as well.
I also really enjoyed Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.
Portrait of an Artist is also a classic, although it's just okay IMO.

I found The Perks of Being a Wallflower somewhat similar.
He is stumped by his own memories and emotions, in a way.
And since you're a /tv/fag you might appreciate that they're making this into a movie. Emma Watson will be in it.

In the "coming-of-age" sci-fi genre of this generation its considered a "classic"
But take heart. Disney used to put out a series of their movies and they labeled all of them "Masterpieces"

I disagree. Ender's Game is to me a total classic, unless you are putting a time limit on classics.
also yr argument is silly.

Definitely read Salinger's other books. In addition, here are some recommendations:

Tom Jones by Henry Fielding
The Sorrows of Young Werther, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [This is much more dense.]
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Demian by Hermann Hesse
Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde [It's literally about a guy who wishes a portrait of him would age instead of himself.]
Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce [A bit more difficult of a read, but I think it's extremely rewarding.]
