23149160 No.23149160 [Reply] [Original]

Various /lit/ publications have come and gone: The Lit Quarterly, Pinecone, The April Reader, and Ideology, to name a few. There have been collaborative works, like Coronameron, The /lit/ Annotated Moby Dick, Legacy of Totalitarianism in a Tundra, and The Complete Works of God II. Some of these projects were one-offs, some were serialized. Some /lit/ projects, like Unreal Press, are still hanging on but are plagued by drama, and some, like &amp, seem to be rapidly in decline.

Also related are the solo writers of /lit/, composed of various namefags and shills who frequent the board: MNM-DR, John David Card, Zulu Alitspa, Frater Asemlen, Horia Belcea, Ogden Nesmer, Lewis Woolston. There are also those who did not come from /lit/ but are /lit/-adjacent simply because they are discussed here so frequently: Mike Ma, R. C. Waldun, Bronze Age Pervert.

This thread is for the discussion of the history of /lit/ writing and the future of /lit/. Why have so many /lit/ projects failed and fallen apart, and what do you think is next for the scene? Does anonymity vs pseudonymity vs. the use of real names make a difference in the success or failure of these projects, and the way in which these projects are perceived? Of the works that /lit/ has produced, are there common characteristics and themes shared between them? Is there a definitively /lit/ style of writing? Has /lit/ produced anything truly great, and if not, do you believe that it will in the future?

Are you fucking slow or something? Spamming is when you deliberately push a thread to the bump limit by making a large number of low-effort or off-topic posts in quick succession. Flooding is when you rapidly fill the catalog with multiple threads about the same topic, thus killing other threads and negatively impacting discourse on the board. All of the threads in your screencap were posted days or weeks apart. Having a single thread up about a specific topic at any given time does not qualify as spamming/flooding. By your logic, having repeated poetry general threads, or /wg/ threads, or sci-fi/fantasy general threads would also constitute spamming/flooding. If seeing other anons discussing /lit/ projects and /lit/ culture bothers you so much, then consider making use of the 'Hide Thread' feature. That's why it's there.

Because writing is fun? You pull these wild ideas straight from the ether, put it into a file, upload it to Bezo's marketplace of schlock, and bam, you've put your ideas out into the world! How cool is that?

The most satisfying thing I can think about is to have a stack of books that I've written and people who enjoy them. All I have to do is be consistent and keep pushing forward. Like with anything in life, most people give up before they've really hit any sort of stride. It is also nice to have you crabs around because the hate is a motivator, you have this group of people who actively hate anyone on /lit/ who writes, so, naturally, I am on #TeamWrite and here to push back against the crabs. It is a fun hobby, where else in modern life can you find any sort of resistance to push back against?

Also, I'd like to add, and I think other authors here can relate, that books need to age a bit like a fine wine. If you have an idea for a book, jump on it, write it, even if you only write 10k of that novel, WRITE IT... because when you go back months later and review it, you'll be less "drunk" off the writing to be able to see what your mind was pulling from the ether. I have like 10-15 books that I've written a bunch for, but then left to stew. Black Eye Friday just needed a little more magic, and Kill Yourself Guy's incessant trolling was enough for me to see the beauty again in the struggles of all of the characters and how they each feed off each other, because the Batman cannot exist without Joker, and vice versa. Sometimes pressure is needed, trouble, headache, whatever. What great art happens in a place of contentment, apathy, or comfort?

Books, in some ways, are like crops, as soon as you get the seed and you're in season, plant it. Write it, do it. Get it out of your system, but don't fret if it isn't a fleshed out novel or story. Put it down somewhere and re-visit it.

The AI was really funny because when I pestered it about the story and I asked it what it thought, it had given me a few different answers that helped me understand that THIS was the book I had to put out sooner than Day of the Rake. I think something is going to happen with the AI or the visors or some leap in tech is about to occur that I will ride on when Day of the Rake is ready, but that hasn't happened yet. Maybe the next Canadian election or the USA election, we'll see how much the AI and augmented reality and shit becomes more influential over 2024.

If I worked a 9-5 job I could easily afford this, instead, I work gig jobs and scrape by on an extremely thin budget so I can exist and write 24/7 when the mood calls. I live the lifestyle of a writer constantly, which is very hard to do if you work 9-5 because your job will crystalize your thoughts in ways that you can't understand until you've had enough isolation and meditation to put you in that zone where the ether, the "super intelligence" can use your brain as a radio station and give you the stories that need to be told.

You know what I'd like to ask Ryan?

Is there any theme to Amp 20? So far, 2024 is SO weird. I don't even know what to think. I'm so inner-focused that it is hard to write for anyone else. I'm wondering what other writers are thinking and feeling at this time, but there is nowhere to get a reading.

4th book is already 1/2 done! Kill Yourself Guy has lit a fire under my ass. Also, the newest version of Calibre is a breeze to use. Highly reommended. I think my 4th book will be ready in under 30 days. 5th book will carry over a character from Black Eye Friday and I can work with what I already have written for that book "Fur Mart" about a group of young people working at a supermarket during the pandemic who don fur suits instead of masks to keep people cheerful during the crisis, but the fur suits piss off the mayor who was already looking to close the supermarket as he has developers ready to turn it into condos and a chain supermarket on the bottom floor... that book already has like... uhh... 20-25k words written. Tara will fit in perfectly into that book.

We'll see if I eat these words, but I think I can get the 4th book done within 30 days. Definitely in a creative peak at the moment.

you have to make it interesting at the beginning of chapter 1. then continue to keep it interesting. the idea that the reader owes you enough free attention to make it to chapter 5 is the height of arrogance. what i remember from the first 2 chapters of the shitkickers is that it was about a bunch of shiftless losers that had nothing better to do but hang out and take drugs. i understand you have to write what you know, but why should anyone care about such mediocre nobodies? did you take this lesson to heart when you wrote your 3rd book? or did you just produce another sadcringe snoozefest?

My 3rd book is free on Amazon from Sunday-Thursday.

I am aiming to have book 4 done in less than 30 days. I've been really, really working hard. Basically just exercising, getting drunk, working gig jobs, and writing.

Seeing the sorry state of Canada in 2024 has inspired me to just write as much as I can, since I have basically no desire to participate in society. Everyone is just so brain-dead that I meet. There's just no point to making friends or anything, so there's lots of time to write!

Have you met many blue collar workers in your life?

In the scene you're talking about, one of the characters is depressed because his bike was stolen, the australian is wasted as aussies always are, the one woman in the scene is having a single pint of beer, and the charming tall brit is having a cheeky few shots while cracking jokes.

You can get my 3rd book for free from Sunday-Thursday this week:

Not an incel neet shut-in, fucked 100's of women and lived a very adventurous life. It has been a fun ride, which is why I can draw from so much life experience to write with. Definitely in a creative peak at the moment and I think I can crank out my 4th book in the next 30 days.

The 4th book I'm focused on is called "BitKings" and it is about 4 friends who strike it rich in crypto, and how the windfall shapes, or destroys, their lives.

I mean, he's writing, he's got a roof over his head and food on his plate. Where is the bad? I think it is a pretty cozy life. I live in even worse conditions with mice and a leaky roof, but I'm loving the creative peak I'm in. Keep in mind, depending on how old you are, the shifting life conditions can be different based on your perspective. When I was in my 20's and 30's I had a ton more money, fucked a new woman every week, and partied all the time with no social media bans. However, I wasn't really fulfilled, nor happy.

I wrote my first book, "City of Singles" as a way of figuring out why serial monogamy wasn't bringing me much joy. It was just a vicious cycle of:
>meet girl
>like each other
>fuck
>honeymoon phase of relationship
>boredom
>dump her
>repeat cycle
Only after I had my 1st child did I FINALLY wake up to the idea that having a family and someone to care for was a genuine come-to-God moment. Holding your child for the first time is an amazing experience, and one you'll never forget.

Now, at 45, I have no interest in chasing women, my interests are writing books and inspiring people to break out of the "left vs right" paradigm that has crippled Canada and turned it into the world's doormat. A place where if you didn't wear the mask and take the "vaccine", you were a second class citizen based on the fears of brainwashed Karens and scared faggots. COVID was a massive bullshit psy-op that transferred so much wealth and power upwards, and now there is pretty much no organic Canadian culture anymore.

No, not at all, the sore subject for me is that the baby's mother is so jealous that I'm making art while she's not, that she's laughing at me while I have nothing to eat. I have a job coming up, but all I have left to eat in my fridge are condiments, one egg, one steak, two cans of tuna, and old pancake mix. I have enough gas in my van to make it to the can depot if I want to take back empties, but it's going to be tight. Such is the road of the artist when you're the straight white male. Meanwhile, diversity hires have money and grants thrown at them by the government, as they need to artificially prop up their pets. My kid is already setup real good to inherit money from her mother's side of the family! The pros of knocking up a rich girl.

I tell her, she can't make art because her life is too easy. Parents bought her 1+ million dollar house, give her a new Mercedes, give her money... if you live in the lap of luxury, you can't really be a real artist. What's going to inspire you if you're not experiencing some discomfort? But I'm experiencing too much discomfort to write at the moment. Will be better once I have a fridge with some food in it again. I don't know what most of this stuff is. I was involved in a number of projects from TAR onwards until I left /lit/. I'm not any of the people named. >> No.23172608

>>23172552
I think you're mostly right, but the harsh criticism can have a purpose (when it's not totally un-constructive), and the overall response is hardly universal; it depends a lot on who's been drawn to the conversation in the first place, and on rare occasions you can get a higher level of discourse. Seeking to make a name for yourself through /lit/ and on /lit/ is definitely pointless, but having a pointless, low-risk environment to practice in (even if the ceiling is low) can be fruitful for someone starting out. And yeah, the ideal is to reach a level where you have better avenues than /lit/.

Funnily, one of the editors of Lit Quarterly was in the last one of these threads (yes, it's even worse than the depressing multi-day thread that you see here), and his general take was the same but with a little more reverence for the rare incidental works of merit that come from here. (The one decent part to these shitty threads being regurgitated constantly is that they inevitably attract the attention of someone with experience in one of these projects; someone from Pinecone was here before the LQ editor.)

Any chance you've got favourite stories from TAR + etc.? I've been working on archiving a lot of the old magazine and collab projects, but having dozens of PDFs isn't really conducive to pulling out the good material from them, and the total mass of work leads to a new form of obscurity.

If you're willing to talk about TAR, you can email me at unofficial.drivel@gmail.com. Even if your experience is that the projects were cesspits, I'm curious.

Where in life are there happy mediums? They practically do not exist. Certainly not in politics.

Age has taught me that extremes exist because there is no middle. You have to fight. You have to come into these spaces and drop your writing and stand on it. If you can't handle that, then you can do 4+ years in University, sucking prof dick and working in the system, and as long as you stay on the safe side of things, you could get grants, writing jobs, or even novels that get rewarded if you follow the "right" path.

If you try to blaze your own trail, the ONLY way you're going to succeed is if you try the hardest shit, like getting /lit/ to like you.

When people want to enter the history books of mountain climbing, do they climb Everest? No, they climb Annapurna and normies have no fucking clue what that means. There was plenty of potential in the beginning, but /lit/ stopped being of any use to real writers about a decade ago (though LQ was a blip on an otherwise downward trajectory), and now it's been reduced to this sad little ersatz scene where, in between episodes of doxing and drama, loners and schizos "publish" kindle ebooks to a single-digit audience of other loners and schizos. As we've seen in previous threads, these losers will even defend the likes of G*rdner, which tells you all about where the bar is set. >One of the others mentioned he may have TAR's slush pile still. I'll email if he feels like sharing it.
I've got the current iteration of the mag archive in the following Mega, and if you send the old TAR slush pile I'll gladly put it up.
>mega.nz/folder/2gsHSSbA#Sl46P4LljGlk9mnpAf3Mlw
(I'll probably include the one-off collabs in a separate folder; if you happen to have something you don't see here, feel free to let me know or send it along.)

>I saw a thread where someone said the zines fell apart due to drama behind the scenes
That might have been me, but if it was I think it was mostly about Ideology and the few second-hand accounts I came across on the archive, which could have easily been bullshit. The more general pattern I noticed is that they all end somewhat unexpectedly, which lines right up with what you say about burning out.

>I think some of your archives from that era were taken from my gdrive
Sounds like we've already chatted then. I'd be curious about what people went on to do after these projects and to pick up some more anecdotes about the trajectory of people on here, and if you're who I figure then I'll ping you somewhere down the road anyway.

Jason gave Frank's latest video on YouTube a great review. Frank is a smart dude. Regardless of whatever personality conflicts there are, Frank is an intelligent person, for sure. A deep thinker.

>> No.23173156

>>23173138
Not to say intelligent people can't be assholes. I have no idea what interactions Frank has had with people outside of /lit/ or him buying the first copy of my second book. Every interaction I've had with him has been positive. I don't know him in person so, who knows, maybe he has behaved poorly towards other authors and their beefs try and spill over into every other relationship between writers here. None of us actually hang out and have a pint together, so we cannot establish any trust. All I can say is that the person known as "F Gardner" bought my book and had nothing but positive interactions with me.

Who knows, maybe he's like a Buddhist psychopath playing 10 characters at once and I'm talking to him right now, I wouldn't know, I can only hope for the best that there are real people and real writers on here that want to share their thoughts and daydreams with others without having to deal with psychopaths. But, you know, fuck it, it is 2024 after all. Fuck it I am getting drunk.

Re-imagine what you know about the measure of intelligence.

Jason Bryan learned the vibe of women and getting vagina
Frank Gardner learned the vibe of the universe and towards enlightenment

The world is truly an onion with so many layers, but few dare to peel back more than a couple. I don't blame them though, look at the ridicule in the west when you "do your own research" so to speak.

My sweet lil' guy buddy inspired me to write poetry. I kind of like the little fella.

Another night.
The kitchen's a mess.
There's something else here.
Eating my bread.
Leaving droppings.

I hate it.

My whiskey's my only friend.
But this thing.
It's taking more than its share.

I see it sometimes.
A flash. A shadow.
Thief in the night.

I tried traps.
Nothing.
It's mocking me.

I'm sick of it.
Sick of sharing.

But then, one quiet night.
I see it. Really see it.
A mouse.
Small. Scared. Hungry.

Just like me.

It's just trying to survive.
Aren't we all?

I leave some cheese out.
Not out of love.
Respect, maybe.
Or just understanding.

We're both trapped in this place.
Both looking for an escape.
It has its crumbs.
I have my bottle.

Neither is enough.
But it's what we have.

In a dim-lit hovel, the stench of stale beer mixing with the acrid smoke curling from a half-burned doob, Jason Bryan slams his Pabst down. The sting of memory cut through him, jagged and raw, a furious surge of rage and nostalgia.

"I just wanna go back to the fucking mall," he snarls, voice gravelly with the residue of too many nights being royal with the crown. "To be ten again, when the world wasn’t such a shitshow. There was a corner store, lit up like a Dutch rave, everything shiny and bright. And that colossal wall of L’eggs pantyhose, with 90 degree bent skinny styrofoam legs, a young boy's curious dream in the checkout eisle. I couldn't tell you why it was something special. It just was. Everything untouched, even with the dark clouds of my parents divorce gathering omnimously in the distance."

I took another swig, the liquor burning a path down my throat, a futile attempt to wash away the bitterness that was all too noticiable by the crabs of /lit/.

"Walking through that mall, clutching a roll of quarters dad handed me like it was some kinda peace offering. As if that could bridge the chasm he was digging, day by day. Made us feel like explorers, a family on patrol in some uncharted retail wilderness. Colonists in a land of discount racks and neon signs, pretending we were whole."

A laugh, harsh and devoid of humor, it spilled from me.

"Wanted to feel fulfilled, you know? Wrist aching from the joysticks of Double Dragon, Haggar piledrivers, shoulders bruised from lugging around Target bags heavy with G.I Joes and Rambos. The smell of cinnamon mixing with three slices of pizza for two bucks in the air, like some gluttonous communion with the other fat and damned wandering this newfound place, a name we had never heard before-foodcourt."

My gaze dropped, lost in the haze of smoke and memories. "Shoppers, every last one of us. Trying to fill the void with whatever shit they could sell us. Flashy lights, final fights, Camcom and Nintendo, I was a happy child, for a bit, in that innocent haze before the pit of hell broke through. Happy, even though everything was about to turn to shit."

I lean back in the terminally online chair, the fucking thing creaking under my weight, a fucked-up shadow against the flickering light. "Angry at my old man, for all the ways he wasn't there. Hurting for my mother, trapped in her silent battles that ended in suicide. But those days at the mall... they were peak 90's, a whisper of what could've been, before everything piled on that woke express elevator to the shitshow."

The bottle's empty now, just like the optimism of days gone by. Jason Bryan sits alone, wrestling with the ghosts of a childhood lost, a bipolar nostalgia for a time when everything seemed possible, even in the shadow of impending doom.

Ted sends me out back to pick up the rent.
"He's late."
"Fuck it, man. He's always late," but the guy won't pick up his phone and Ted can't stand speakin' to him otherwise--the guy doesn't know how to shut up and he's always bullshitting about being an author. And author my ass--I saw him shitting in a bucket not a fuckin' month ago.
"Why don't you just kick this slob out?"
"Fred, where else you gonna find a tenant who'll shit in a bucket for $600 a month?"
"Yeah yeah."
So I head back.

Spring, when it's wet and just startin' out, has a dyin' smell--all the raggedy leaves and shit from the fall start reeking up from the mud. Mouldy, maybe. Anyway, smells like that when I go back there. Smells real bad, in fact, and I think about how much I hate this bum in the shack out back here, and I think I better not catch him shittin' on the bucket again. And fuck, that smell better not be the bucket, 'cause it gets worse as I get up to the door and I wanna wring Ted for sending me here. Gettin' ready for another "sorry bro I was in the mode forgot what day it was" while I'm knockin' at the door.
"Hey--" I forgot his fuckin' name, so I just start bangin' louder and ya' know "Hey HEY HEY" but nothin'.

"Hey, Ted, you sure he's out there? Nothin' when I knocked."
"Fucksake, yeah I know he's out there, lights been on all week and it's not like that bum goes to work."
Ted gets pissy as he grabs the key.
"Yer' still comin' with," and we both go back.

This time, while we're at the door and I'm thinkin' about the smell I start to think about the light too, and about the phone. Ted's banged a couple times, yelled out a couple "Jason! open the fuck up!" and now he's got the key in the door--you have to jiggle the shit, so it's not a one-second deal. Anyway a bad thought cuts through me and I grab Ted's wrist.
"Light's been on all week, he won't pick up the phone, and he's not comin' to the door?"
"Yeah, well no shit."
"Ted, Chrissake, could he be fuckin' dead?"
When I say it the colour goes out on Ted's face, but much to my surprise--much as I don't want him to--he's now jigglin' that key harder than ever, and he's shoutin' some pretty scared-soundin'
"Hey Jason! Jason, fucksake, Jason, open the fuck up!"
which, of course, doesn't get much of a response, but finally the lock clicks and that ugly start-of-spring smell hits me harder.

Now I realise I didn't have it so bad when I caught this guy--Jason, I know now--crappin' on the bucket. I realise I got no stomach for whatever cops or EMTs or embalmers or whoever go through in those cases you read about online--those cases where somebody left all alone dies and nobody knows it for a good while. Because rotten meat in the fridge is bad enough for me, and catchin' sight of some guy's mouse-eaten face sagging onto a stale PBR is way too much. When we got in the room he'd practically melted over one of those rainbow-colour keyboards the fuckin' kids are on, and meanwhile the screen's still lit up.

Ted says "You look for his wallet. After that I call the cops," but I don't stick around and I got 'em on the phone before he can even finish.
Takes 'em a half-hour to arrive, and meanwhile Ted's tellin' me the wallet was empty anyway, none too happy he had to poke around the desk to find it. But he tells me there was a photo in it.
"Yeah? Who's it of?" while I start thinkin' of kids or a wife.
"Fuckin' Scarlett Johansson, man."

Ya' know? Never in my life I ever felt such a weird kind of sad.

Floating above the filth, the two trespassers, and his own corpse, Jason Bryan—or what was left of him in spirit—watched with a sort of drunken amusement that only the dead could muster.

"Ah, Fred and Ted, or whoever the fuck you are, my audience of crabs," Jason slurred, his ghostly form swaying as if rustled by an unfelt breeze stirring in the ether, a spectral bottle of whiskey clutched in his transparent, ruddy hand. "You never did appreciate a good adventure, did you? Too caught up in the mundane, the rent, the fitting-in. But look at me, ten books down the line, and I've finally done it. Made my cheap exit. Kill Yourself Guy would like to think he won, but I got the fuckin' 10 books done. I did it."

He glanced down at his own decomposing form, face half-chewed by his mouse roommate, an expression of morbid satisfaction crossing his ghostly face. "Ain't it funny, huh? How the world keeps spinning, even when one less hopeless artist can't shitpost or shill anymore. But I promised myself, ten books or bust. And I made it, and that's all that counts. So what if the last audience I entertained was a couple of flies and a mouse? Even if he chewed my nose off afterwards."

The spectre of Jason Bryan chuckled, glowing blue above the dullards milling below, a sound like leaves rustling in the wind. "Fred, Ted, you're looking for treasure in the pockets of a man who valued words over wealth. If he had a dollar to his name, it was converted into alcohol, then urine. The way she goes. What did you expect to find? A fortune? Wisdom? Pissed away. That fucker's wealth was in the stories, any legacy would be inked in pages—hell, could be scrawled in shit on a bathroom wall—not in the scraps of paper you so desperately seek to post on /lit/, to make fun of the dead."

Jason's astral projection lowered itself, down, down slowly, silently, the unaware living unbeknownst completely—peering over their shoulders with a curiosity that belied his detachment. "And ah, my dear ScoJo. My muse, my unreachable star who would never fuck some old dork with no hit books. Even in death, I would keep her close. Not that she'd care for the affections of a dead man, especially one who lived in a shack, but it's the thought that counts, right? Right?!"

Jason's gaze then turned upwards, towards the bright light beckoning beyond the ceiling, his tone shifting to one of introspection, the harsh glare of authentically viewing oneself.

"The world's going to hell, sure. But I shot my shot, didn't I? They didn't vaccinate this mother fucker! Ten books to leave behind as a trail of literary turds, my favourite Goodreads quote of mine has my character Hitler Diarrhea dropping a fucking sick line, a carving in stone in the annuls of human literary work—what more can a man do but live his truth, write his heart out, and then, when the time comes, step aside, fuck off, or both?"

"—or in my case, dropping dead, bottle in hand, middle finger raised, and a smile on my face."

Footsteps, slower than usual. Two hesitant knocks on the door. Sky flipped her phone over. "Yeah?"

She was already bracing herself, but the way her mother moved made her sit straight up.

"I got a... they called from, uh..." Lily sighed, looked around, tried to figure out what to do with her hands as she sat down on the bed next to her daughter. "Honey, it's your dad."

They hugged and wept a bit, very quietly. Bastard, was all Lily thought. You fucking moron bastard. "Tell you what," she said as she wiped Sky's tears away with the sleeve of her sweater. "Tomorrow, we'll go to the Custerdome. Get something to eat. Do something fun. What do you think?"

"Okay."

"Or we could just stay home."

Sky nodded. "I think I want to be alone now."

"Sure, sweetie, sure. I'll leave some lasagna in the fridge."

After her mother left, Sky contemplated her main reaction: that of awesome relief. Relief that came in sustained, impossible-to-fight surges. Guilt led her to dig out the last thing her father had gifted her: a clumsily bound book, sticky with glue. Twin pangs of embarrassment and affection when she saw the inept cover, the juvenile name he had picked for it. On the title page: a generic motivational phrase, inscribed in tortured, unnatural cursive. She was still very young, but she knew that what she had in her lap was different somehow.

She put it on the nightstand, and then she put it back in the drawer.

That night, Sky dreamt that she was walking on a cold beach at night. Wind and waves kept lashing her, and she ducked into a small cave opening.

She tottered in the cold wet dark, crouching down in a streak of moonlight. A tiny pale crab was passing by in the opposite direction. She covered her toes.

"Hey, little buddy," she said, moving closer.

"Gotta keep moving," the crab replied in its squeaky crab voice. She watched as it jittered on, determined, out of the cave.

Do you think he didn't boil this meal thoroughly and reduce the sauce so it was thick and yummy?

That's the good stuff. I can't emphasize enough how inspirational that kind of story is to my writing, having been mentally ill myself. Looking forward to reading it.

It's clearly put to shame by the things Jason himself freestyled in this thread. Jason is the superior writer and his 4th book is due in 27 days.

I've been cooking like a madman for decades. With curry, one should cook the meat much longer than the veggies. The meat should be pretty much done before throwing in the veggies (unless it's the onion/garlic, which can be cooked with the meat, since it'll reduce & become part of the sauce and flavor). And then there's the matter of proper spicy heat...
