Why are Athiests so concerned with whether or not the Bible is true, and not wether or not believing it is a good way to lead your life?

Is it just an exercise in narcissism? Fedora tipping atheists trying to make themselves feel smart?

Believing in which part? That it's good to stone non-virgin brides to death on their father's doorstep? That it's good to listen to voices in your head and prepare to slaughter your own son on their command? That it's good to chop up baby penises for the Lord? That slaves should submit to their masters and not seek freedom? Or all the hippie stuff Jesus preached at length like giving up all your possessions to be perfect? Or to take no thought for the morrow and be like the fowl of the air who have no need for barns or flowers in the field who don't need to work and just grow without effort?

Nah, the Bible is almost entirely trash. There's a reason it's morality is referred to as slave morality.

do these "holy men" come back to life after being executed? you'll say the disciples lied but it would be an inconceivable thing to lie about in that time period with their understanding of jewish doctrines; a created lie some of them would then die for. the 500 people that paul and luke interviewed probably hallucinated seeing jesus and all the historians that were born in the time period of living memory were probably misled as well. someone like erhman would say the romans wouldn't have respected jewish burial traditions, but then ignore all the other times they respected them, especially right before passover, to say jesus was never buried and was left on the cross for animals to eat. one day you all will grow up and realize that the simplest explanation for life and existence is by design, unless you are intentionally clinging to the explanation of a random cosmic occurrence just so you can maintain your degeneracy.

>Is it just an exercise in narcissism? Fedora tipping atheists trying to make themselves feel smart?
For me personally? Kinda. I do like arguing against religiontards, because it's a nice break from discussing real issues that are riddled with doubt. If I'm discussing something like whether such and such law is good for the economy or even the above statement about living by the truth, I'm always worried that I might be wrong. you tell yourself hyperbolic things like this so you don't have to confront the reality of possibly being wrong. i'd bet you've never even read the gospel for yourself and probably rely on second hand skeptics for all your views on the old and new testament, and that's fine; but what do you make of life and our existence? a random cosmic occurrence where everything came from nothing? anon, the precision required for life is incredible. if the expansion and contraction of our universe was off by a single nanosecond(look up just how fast that is), life wouldn't exist. if the the force of gravity was a fraction of a percent off, life wouldn't exist. we carry 3.1 billion bits of info in our dna; all of us unique and different with even our finger prints. the way birds chirp in the morning to stimulate growth in plants, etc. you don't even need to read the bible; you could be rooted soley in science and eventually get to the point where design is the most reasonable take on all of this. and what did the "magic jew" say? no one gets to the father but through me.

>> No.23141987

I don't get your argument. Isn't that conclusion the same problem of making insane leaps to get to worshipping Jesus? People today are educated and need coherence. You can be a missionary on Retard Island and get tons of respect for Jesus tales. But the developed West needs to see how that justifies all the magical thinking that Christianity demands. It's very lazy to say "the universe is amazing, therefore Jesus."

>> No.23142046

read this >>23139028. we come to these conclusions based on how reasonable they are. you think it "magical" because you haven't taken the time to read just how rooted in history the "tales" are. if the universe depends on a miracle, per atheist logic citing hume, why is the miracle of resurrection such a gigantic stretch? i'd argue today, people are less educated on historic matters and appeal to authority in masse more often than not; these authorities being propped up "philosophers" like sam harris, atkins, hitchens, etc who have admitted to being in an unfalsifiable position in their beliefs. they admit they would explain away any miracle in front of them in a naturalistic manner such as hallucination, "going mad", or extra terrestrial trickery. and to your last point, it comes back to being the most reasonable explanation. if jesus is the messiah spoken of in the old testament, if he proves his divinity through miracles and resurrection, if all other religions point to him in some fashion(he's a buddha in buddhism, "christlike conciousness" in yoganandas and hindus, a prophet to islam, etc) and jesus points to himself, what are you then to believe? it's not lazy at all to come to this conclusion, as i said before.

>you could be rooted soley in science and eventually get to the point where design is the most reasonable take on all of this
I don't think there's any basis for supposing that if the world was designed by a God, it would be any more likely to be the way it is. Like, saying a designer would make a universe with life would be claiming to understand the motives of something far beyond human understanding.

It is a moral duty for someone to pursue truth. I'll defend my argument with the following premises:

Premise one: There exists, in all or at least most situations, a possible action which is most virtuous

Premise two: Virtuous actions exist, along with the opposite

Premise three: A greater understanding of the world, specific situation, and of what virtue is better allows someone to know the most virtuous action, and how to do it

Premise four: Most people have the mental capacity to be moral agents. That is, they are able to be judged morally and have a responsibility to act morally, which consists of acting virtuously

Premise five: Most people have the mental capacity and resources to pursue truth, or more precisely, an incomplete shadow of truth

Conclusion: People who have the capacity and resources to pursue truth have a capacity to do so, for pursuing truth makes one more capable of acting with virtue. If the claims made by the bible are not true, and one has good reason/evidence to believe the claims made in the bible are not true, then pretending those claims are true would be unvirtuous.

A designer would necessarily need to be more complex himself than his creation, right? Why would you accept that the creator can come into existence without a more complex creator, but life and our universe could not have without a creator? It seems to me you just want to push your incredulity into a mysterious "creator" because you can excuse yourself from thinking any further than that. In short, it's a non-answer, a dodge, something to soothe your incredulity. It's not a serious philosophical answer in any way, shape, or form.

I thought it would be a really good idea to learn the Bible and take it seriously. That means understanding it on the esoteric side too. One big thing I got out of it was that Christianity is really ridiculously blasphemous and that I've been absorbing some pretty corrupt notions because of it. Just as well, it let me see where other literature was missing the mark in addressing the shape of reality.

what is your more "reasonable" explanation then? i've outlined a few reasons for creationism being the best explanation over the alternative statistical improbabilities of abiogenesis and the trillions of years required as well as common dna ancestry because "dna is similar". science can't even nail down the constant force of gravity sir isaac newton candidly walked back. i mean, if you want to make your leap of faith with all of that, that is fine, but being smug about outs you as a midwit.

action or inactions of mankind explain most of this world's suffering. not all suffering is bad, either. how does one gather wisdom without problems to solve, or gain strength without overcoming difficulties? there are many articles talking about the "problem from evil" you should check out. and arguing in the context of god, you'd have to concede that those poor children suffered in this life, but joined god in his kingdom.

The ones I'm refering to are those that claim God is not real and actually do the things you posted. Those that do and support some of things that get posted on other parts of the site if you catch my drift.
>So what, you cheat on your wife and ease the guilt by going to confession?
No those people are still guilty. Telling a priest doesn't really absolve you of cheating on you wife. I think that was added to the faith for other reasons.

>Statistical improbabilities
You can't say anything about the statistical likelihood of our universe because you have no idea what the parameters are. It's possible there are quadrillions of universe potentialities that exist in varying forms and thus one with the right conditions for life would become expected. You will never have the correct denominator, thus you cannot even speak to whether our universe was likely or not to exist.
>an eternal being outside of space, time and matter has to fit into my finite framework of philosophical understanding
This is you literally saying "it's magic, I don't need to explain it". Embarrassing but typical of theists.
>eye witness testimony commonly has outlier details
Pretty sure the presence of a literal angel of divine origin wouldn't be a mere detail to accept disagreement over but sure
>action or inactions of mankind explain most of this world's suffering
Absolutely not. What action of man causes bone cancer to arise in children? Or any of the other horrific diseases which arise spontaneously in children? What about the excruciating pain of infected teeth which is what scores of our ancestors suffered and died from? What about natural disasters, attacks by predators who seek to eat you alive, or any number of random events which cannot in any way be attributed to human agency? Your only real answer is to extol pain and suffering as good (thus, you must wish for children to suffer, since you claim it is a good thing) and also that some entirely fantastical reality awaits after death which makes everything okay (justifying manifest evil we know happens in reality by some imagined good which has zero basis of truth). To anyone not indoctrinated into a cult, this is beyond deranged and you are sick and twisted for accepting this kind of thinking.

>Pretty sure the presence of a literal angel of divine origin wouldn't be a mere detail to accept disagreement over but sure
omission of a detail isn't guilt. i go to the grocery store and john and his family are there. i return home and tell my wife i ran into john at the store. it does not mean his wife and kids weren't there as well. the gospels compliment each other often in these ways. matthew says "an angel said", john said two where there. this isn't an irreconcilable contradiction. mark was a scribe of peter and luke gathered information from eyewitnesses 15-20 years later. i could go on and on refuting many of bart ehrman's points of contention here but you get the idea i hope.

>Absolutely not. What action of man causes bone cancer to arise in children?
many of these diseases and ailments started popping up following the agricultural revolution if anthropology studies are to be trusted. that would indicate some involvement in mankind's work. not to mention the modern makeup of our food, microplastics in water, adjuvants in our vaccines and long term affects of medications. i seemed to have hit a nerve here, but the world is cruel and unfair, anon, and i maintain most of it is due to the actions or inactions(people starving, for instance) of mankind; the random unexplainable earthquake or flood doesn't change that. what is your explanation and what do you believe since your entire post offers nothing of the sort and is just attempting to shoot down my points; a murder scene detective that has no theories of his own, but just exists to poke holes in the others' work. if you like to believe mankind as a cosmic accident, a cancer to this planet, that is surely your right to; it just doesn't seem like a very positive and healthy way to live, arbitrarily assigning meaning and values to things and sorting out moral relativism.

If we don't have good evidence for an answer, the honest thing is to acknowledge we don't know, not to invent an answer and claim it's true. This is what children do and is unbecoming of an adult.
>many of these diseases and ailments started popping up following the agricultural revolution
You are laughably uninformed. I see you skimmed by the concept of infected teeth without a second thought. This is a particularly painful way to die as the infection goes from the tooth socket into the brain. But I'm sure you'll find a way to blame this on the actions of man. Also, a detective that points out the flaws in his colleagues theories would be highly valuable if he averts the accusation of an innocent man, but you can't even seem to grasp this very simple and basic concept. Again, the beginning of wisdom is to acknowledge the things you do not know, and I see you are a long way from wisdom. >slave morality.
Derp. Go read the Gospel. The first book is Mark

------Ch 1---------

The Preaching of John the Baptist and The Baptism of Jesus.
John the Baptist says of Jesus "I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit.”
>slave morality would be Jesus teling John the Bapstist: oh no, you are my master, I am your slave, I am preaching a slave morality here
We are also told a few lines later that John the Baptist was arrested. If John the Baptist was following slave morality, he never would have been arrested

The Temptation of Jesus.
Jesus is tempted by Satan for 40 days
>slave morality would be Jesus telling Satan, oh no problem, you are a my master, I will do what you want, I am preaching a slave morality here

The Call of the First Disciples
Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
>slave morality isn't going around asking people to follow you

The Cure of a Demoniac
In the synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!
>slave morality would be Jesus saying, oh no, live and let live! I am preaching a slave morality here

The Cure of Simon’s Mother-in-Law, The Cleansing of a Leper, and Other Healings
He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him...he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.
>slave morality would be Jesus saying, oh no don't try to fight disease and demons, they are all good, I am preaching a slave morality here

------Ch 2---------

The Healing of a Paralytic
Jesus ssaid to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, “Why does this man speak that way?* He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?” Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?
>slave morality would be Jesus telling the religious authorities: Yes Sir, you're right, I'm sorry. But the whole Gospel is the opposite of this. If you love literature about someone going around and sticking it to the religious establishment and religious leaders and their laws, you'll love the Gospel. Slave morality would be the opposite: Jesus going around in obedience to all the religious authorities, treating them as the master and respecting all their laws

The Call of Levi
He said to him, “Follow me.”
slave morality isn't asking people to follow you
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?
>Jesus again rebukes the religious establishment and the relgious leaders, the whole Gospel is him doing this. Opposite of slave morality

The Question About Fasting
“Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus rebukes the laws of the religious establishment. Opposite of slave morality

The Disciples and the Sabbath
As he was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain. At this the Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
>Jesus again rebukes the religious establisment and their laws

We are only two chapters in to the first and shortest book of the Gospel, all the Gospels go on like this.

Later in the Gospel (Mark 6, Matthew 10; Luke 6 and 9) Jesus endows his disciples with authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction and sends them out to go do the same thing Jesus was doing ("proclaim the kingdom of God"). He told them "And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”

Later, he tells them he's going to send them the Holy Spirit (which happens on Pentecost), and we all have the Holy Spirit, which is God, we all have the same prophetic, priestly, and kingly calling that Jesus had

a Roman soldier would be slave morality. That's probably why there are no Roman soldiers that people look at with respect. Googling it, the most famous Roman soldier was Spurius Ligustinus. Has anyone ever heard of him?

As for the Roman Empire, there were many Roman emperors who tried to eradicate Christianity. If the Roman Empire was so alpha, why did they fail so badly at wiping out Christianity?

The Christians spread from Jerusalem and started Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire, and it only took until 300 AD for the Roman Empire to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire

>If Christians were taught slave morality you wouldn't have all these martyrs throughout history
Baiting powerful people into executing you because you believe they will be punished when they die while you will be rewarded (something completely made-up by diseased minds denying the reality of life) is the fulfillment of slave morality, not a repudiation of it. Refusing to comply with lip service to civil authorities because it is apparently better to die—there are cancer victims with more will to live. I am curious what your working definition is of slave morality. Are you even following Niezsche's technical vocabulary (which would be necessary to critique it) or are you thinking "slave means this, and morality means that, so, like, ummm Christianity can't be slave morality"? From the earlier examples it is painfully obvious that christer apologists are not sending their best.

Realistically it couldn't happen because the emphasis of Christianity was on belief. That means they could still look like they're not doing any wacky rituals while practicing. That's very much in contrast to other religions which would be more clearly in conflict with the state. Also consider theres only so much that can be done without having problems in the empire.
