23142876 No.23142876 [Reply] [Original]

Reminder that if a philosopher was not a mathematician or scientist as their day job, their opinion can go directly into the trash.

The analytics looked at philosophical problems in such a profound way as to make all philosophers' ideas that came before them look hilariously childish. Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, Quine, etc. were plumbing the depths of what was possible with logic and language. Even Whitehead, whose metaphysical ideas fall in the woo woo tier too most likely, based his ideas on a lifetime of studying physics and math and is probably far closer to the truth than something a retard like Hegel or Husserl could dream up.
Meanwhile, you also have someone like Schopenhauer who never cracked open a math book in his life and the height of his philosophy is essentially "Dude I hate women so much it's unreal." Humanities midwits take people like this very very seriously for some reason.

So yeah, philosophy is mostly garbage, but if you have to read it, read the analytics.

Are you either a mathematician or scientist? Because I am not, I am however a master of mechanical engineering. As for your critique of philosophers who do not possess mastery of mathematics... This is why I have a hard time believing you are either of these things because if you were you'd realize that the mathematics that are applicable to philosophy is very basic in the academic world. As for applying them in philosophy, I think still that you can think in a manner that mathematics may be able to represent without actually understanding the mathematics. Sets and logic really isn't that complicated. I mean for me difficulty starts at partial differential functions, everything before is pretty easy. I guess geometry can get quite difficult as well but where is its utility?

No of course not, but it's far easier to work through logic to prove it correct or (in rare cases) disprove it than it is to disprove a philosopher.
Hegel can just invent metaphysical gobbledygook and get away with it because there's no way to prove him wrong.

>> No.23142982

>>23142944
Well this is why philosophy really ought to be divided into two camps. There's science and then there's art. Hegel is able to invent shit if you just view philosophy as a vehicle for thought where you engage actively with it and not just take his word for it. Which is a bit of a weak take I guess, but I do not really see why bad philosophy should be thrown out, it serves as grounds for developing boundaries to shitty thoughts.

You don't know what you are talking about. Schopenhauer spends multiple chapters discussing Euclidian geometry in World as Will and Representation and was well versed in the sciences. He decided to focus on philosophy because of the limits of the scientific method. Complete Retard.

Engineers apply the shit that scientists are able to accomplish at small laboratory scale with very controlled conditions. Engineers take this to grand scales with variable conditions and make it work. It's applied science sure and sure the skill set needed is different but you engage with optimizing systems all day. To think that there is no utility in this just.. fuck man you are an actual, capital letter R

So we can use some mathematical structure to model reality, that's good. That doesn't mean knowing some mathematical fact tells us anything a priori about the universe. Newton's laws, a perfectly valid model, states that speed is unbounded, is that true? Calculus was used for centuries before it was ever rigorously defined. Math is just a useful tool for the sciences/engineers, that's it.

but I get this feeling from philosophers that are mathematicians/scientists, that they are very eager and anxious to arrive at their presupposed scientific conclusions, rather than the actual "truth".
