But it's clear as daylight that all of the other inhabitants of the book find one or both of the Bundren couple as contemptible and we I think we are meant to sympathize with the children brought along on an absurdist journey against their own accord but forced upon them by Anse and unwritten familial obligation
It's also quite clear that Addie's lack of love towards her children is not meant to be viewed as virtuous or good. It's merely Addie Bundren, beyond good and evil, not just a victim of circumstance but an already dead woman willfully perpetuating the cycle of hatred and illness that plagues both the Bundrens and the American South as a whole. Her spite towards Anse is furthered as spite towards her children with Anse - except for Jewel - and as such her misery is transferred onto them.
Race has nothing to do with the story. It's about the iniquities of the South and the falsehood of the Southern Ideals that were popular in Faulkner's time. I should know I'm from the Carolinas.
