There's a huge contention Tolkien fans have against ASOIAF for being morally grey, violent, and pornographic - yet, The Witcher has all three of these in abundance as well. Why is it all about GRRM vs Tolkien, never including Sapkowski?

It's modern fantasy on par with slavic folklore in the same way that Tolkien wrote fantasy on par with northern european folklore.

I’d say more fans of GOT actually read the books compared the the witcher fans. Plus the media that gets the most attention from normies for the witcher are the Netflix show and the games which tone ‘problematic’ shit down. Plus the tone of the books is highly ironic.

The same reason why Tolkien fans don’t care about the dragon age books. The witcher books are terrible and it would be very easy to believe that they were written after the games as were mass effect and dragon age books. At least asoiaf is a good series despite its many flaws. It’s a series work of epic fantasy. The witcher is just mediocre.

Well, GRRM and Tolkien really are in a different league from Andrzejklmnyxz, also George has beef with LOTR's realism (even though he has VASTLY inferior world-building outside of food descriptions and he doesn't appear to be aware of the meta-narative)

Speaking as someone who hates GRRM, No one cares enough about the Witcher Books to hate on them.

>> No.23095703

>>23094869
Two reasons.

1. As other anons have said, Witcher books don't have nearly the same kind of significance. The video games are probably well known, but not for the plot. The TV shows don't have the budget, viewership or cultural footprint anywhere close to LOTR or AWOIAF media. Before those, nobody knew about the books.

2. Tolkien and GRRM have different ideas about how to write a fiction book. Tolkien focuses on heroic narratives and myth, GRRM focuses on historic fiction. GRRM is trying much harder at worldbuilding (although he still has glaring flaws) and tries to avoid having things happen because "rule of cool". Also, GRRM has poured oil on the fire himself with his comments about "Aragorn's tax policy" or whatever. So their fandoms are naturally positioned to fight each other.
OTOH, Sapkowski is firmly in Tolkien's corner in these terms. Yes, he is more violent and more pornographic and somewhat more morally grey, but he most of all focuses on the cool story and narrative. The worldbuilding is a sideshow, and includes stuff that is placed in a pseudo-medieval setting but stolen from 19th and 20th century history. So from this point of view, there are more differences between Tolkien and GRRM, than there is between Tolkien and Sapkowski.

The Witcher is steeped in Slavic mythology and bleakness and is published as shamelessly self-gratifying pulp. ASOIAF is cultureless American trash that burgers insist on treating as high art.

It's literally not even Slavic folklore though, it's ripped straight out of Arthurian French fantasy

The Witcher is literally pulp fiction too, the "SLAVIC SOVL" shit just got blown out of proportion by the Video Games which actually incorporated more Polish folktales into the games, but which were not necessarily part of the original books.
Ffs the characters are called Gerald, Jennifer, Cirillia, Tirss, etc. these are ridiculously Western names from France and Britain (except Cirillia which is Greek).

Because it's shit, and widely regarded to be shit. There is a good reason why they never achieved any recognition beyond his part of Poland. It is famous because of the video games, not because of the quality of the writing.

>>23094871
There is nothing Slavic about it, it is generic European folk lore.
