I picked up some fantasy series in my local used book store for cheap, but don’t know which one to start.

>Memory, Thorn, and Sorrow by Tad Williams
>Riyria series by Michael J Sullivan
>Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne

What do people think of these series?

I have read one book, it's a pretty likeable bromance with a pretty simple plot/setting.

>Memory, Thorn, and Sorrow by Tad Williams
A slowburn quest, something like Arya, Bran or Jon's adventures in ASOIAF (which was partially inspiread by Williams). A pretty good language, a pretty good setting.

Funny buddy adventure, his attempt at writing a different series sucks
I found this boring, classic case of multiple povs but only 1-2 that are interesting.

The Great Change (and Other Lies), First Law World - Joe Abercrombie (2023)

The first three of these stories were previously included in the Waterstones special editions of the Age of Madness trilogy books. The Great Change is published here for the first time. Abercrombie warns that these stories shouldn't be read until after you've read the book it goes with and for the last, until after you've finished the trilogy. What I've written can be read without having read anything else.

The Thread
The devaluation of labor and the ascendancy of capital in an unregulated free market is demonstrated through the production of clothing starting from the harvesting of cotton to the presentation of a garment to a wealthy businesswoman. Quality plummets as profits soar.
Enjoyable

The Stone
The path of a single huge blood diamond is followed from its discovery to its incorporation into regalia. Along the way all manners of criminal activity ensue. A great amount of individual profit is gained through undermining the guild system, organized labor, and solidarity. However, it's never enough.
Enjoyable

The Point
Hundreds of prisoners, political and otherwise, slaves, and other forced labor toil away in the iron mines. Their lives hold no value other than the value they produce for the owner. A man ponders whether the downsides of profit at the expense of all else is worth its rewards. The foundries are indifferent to its usage, cutlery or swords, it matters not as long as they're paid. An arms dealer sells to all sides, as to do otherwise would enrich someone else.
Enjoyable

The Great Change
The origins of The Great Change are revealed. Scenes from the trilogy are presented from a different perspective. New scenes fill out what wasn't previously put on page.
Enjoyable

I got back into asoiaf recently because some got threads popped up on /tv/ and I listened to some theory that the reason Wymar Royce got killed in the prologue the way he was is because the Others are looking for Jon and Wymar fit the description of a Stark, and so how do they know about Jon and what do they want with him, and well white walkers usually want to turn babies into white walkers and it got me thinking that maybe the whole “Prince that was promised” means the prince that is promised to the white walkers to become the great other/marry her (in case it’s a woman like the nights queen).

Maybe it’s an already established theory I dunno I thought it sounded pretty interesting. I’ve also got a thing going about how magic always seems to involve blood and fire (literally the Targaryen words and they use this to create dragons) but Weirwoods use blood aswell (and I think Ned purposefully or unaware to old tradition) feeds the weirwood of winterfell with blood when he cleans ice after executions and maybe winterfell gets some sort of protection thanks to that?

And maybe the magic in the wall that’s capable of keeping White walkers out is from the “sacrificial” oaths all watch members take when they pledge themselves to the watch

Obviously the others use a different type of magic from the rest of the known world, maybe not blood related at all, though if the children really did create them and with obsidian then I guess they too fall under blood and fire magic.. although it’s odd that blood and fire creates dragons that then creates obsidian that then creates ice demons

It’s too bad twow will likely never be finished it would be really cool to see where it all goes, I don’t think the show followed George’s intended ending at all, minus perhaps that Dany goes mad but I don’t think she’ll go mad literally, it’s going to be poetic about how she is never going to be able to actually go home. And that Jon goes beyond the wall (but I think it’ll be for the reasons stated above not just to be a hobo with the wildlings)

>The canopy of the Menoa tree grew still, and for several minutes, all was quiet in the clearing. Then the ground began to shake and the roots in front of Eragon began to twist and grind, shedding flakes of bark as they pulled aside to reveal a bare patch of dirt, out of which emerged what appeared to be a lump of corroded iron roughly two feet long and and a foot and a half wide. As the ore came to rest on the surface of the rich black soil, Eragon felt a slight twinge in his lower belly. He winced and rubbed at the spot, but the momentary flare of discomfort had already vanished. Then the root around his ankle loosened and retreated into the ground, as did those that had been holding Saphira in place.
Did he get impregnated by a tree?

>>23027249

Frodo is endearing as fuck and you appreciate him more on a re-read and especially reading the trilogy as an adult. You got to admirer the little bugger's fortitude for how he was able to cope with the ring trying to mentally torture him along the way to Mount Doom. I think his character is an acquired taste because he's surrounded by much more interestin characters like Aragorn, or Gandalf. Definitely seems boring and bland when you're reading it as a child or teenager.

The dialogue is mostly awful and character development non-existent. HOWEVER other than that it was great. I loved the nostalgia for infinity and though I saw some twists coming, the story surprised me right up until the end. Thank you Mr Reynolds very cool

I think the books will end with Aegon and Sansa trying to fulfill the Ice and Fire prophecy that Rhaegar wanted to complete when you think about it both Aegon and Sansa have a lot in common especially both being pawns of Little Finger and Varys they are both also in hiding living under different identities and their respecitve house colours are reflected in their hair albiet inversely; Sansa's hair is auburn/red the colours of House Targaryen, while Aegon/Young Griff's hair is white the colours that appear on the crest of House Stark behind the Direwolf. There's no doubt a whole lot more details and rabbit holes I could enter for this but I'd rather not make a long arsed paragraph about it but I think another reason they could get together is because GRRM might bookend things because a Stark and Targaryen essentially caused this whole entire mess the kingdom of Westeros is going through he's no doubt going to jump ahead to when current cast of characters are adults trying to potentially stop The Long Night from happening I think in this scenario you're going to have a Mormont back on the Wall maybe as Lord Commander again, a Stark ruling Winterfell once more after the Battle of Ice is over, and potentially Tyrion murdering Daenerys after she comes to the conclusion to do something dangerous that could potentially harm millions of people mirroring what Jaime did with Aerys, showcasing how everything is somewhat cyclic with a history repeating itself motiff but maybe a threeway team of people consistin of Bran, Sansa, and Aegon maybe being the three heads of the dragon will become the ones to usher in a dream of spring bringing some sort of peace and stability to Westeros.

For sure, I think Sam being more temperamental and parochial overshadows Frodo a bit and leads to all the downplaying of Frodo as a character and more importantly a hero. The "Sam was the real hero" types don't appreciate the struggle Frodo went through as the Ring-bearer

Do you think Kellhus is actually fond of the people he surrounds himself with? Aside from Esmenet and Serwe, do you think he considers Cnauir and Akka in a way an emotionally stunted Dunyain could?

He's clearly intrigued by Cnauir, and his core frustration with Akka is that he doesn't get to master him. He doesn't even execute him at the end of the first trilogy to close a loose thread, just tells him "get the fuck out."

Faithful and the Fallen for sure. Book 1 is the weakest, but it really picks up as it goes on and the rest of the series is a ride. There's also a sequelt trilogy but you don't need to worry about that right now.

Riyria is solid, but unremarkable. It's worth a look eventually. Ironically I think Riyria Revelations is still probably the author's best work and yet all he seems to write is shit in the same setting at one point or another.

Memory, Thorn, and Sorrow I have only limited experience with, but I did about 2/3 (of a lengthy novel) of the first novel on audio and literally fuck all happens in all of that time besides the MC leaving. It was a bore, but I always hear the series gets good. It just was a terrible first impression.

I'm really digging this book: it's nice having a fantasy with low stakes, which is not about saving the kingdom/world from an ancient evil or a formidable foe.
My only complaint is that you could replace dragons with lions and the plot wouldn't be affected that much.

Ed Greenwood created the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. That's not the same as D&D. It's but one of many campaign settings. FR wasn't even the default campaign setting until 5th edition. I don't think the novels Greenwood has written have been that influential. It's certainly not been plagiarized. If we're taking about D&D, then it'd be more those who wrote the Player's Handbooks for each edition. Aside from R.A. Salvatore the FR novels have had mostly abysmal sales and influence.

You should have dropped that when the author focused more on real life than the game. Especially when he started with all those "side quests" and giving a bunch of different POVs.

I dropped it around book 3 (main book not side quest). The focus started going to more real life problems and it took away from the story. It's why I stay away from any online or VR books, they are all shit.

> Interviewer: Did it all start out with the image of Guts, the main character?
Miura: It was Guts' gimmick, or rather his "style." He's a dark hero... or a dark nihilistic type, like Hakaider from Android Kikaider (by Shotaro Ishinomori). Then I threw in the fantasy genre – works I liked such as Conan (by Robert E. Howard) and Guin Saga (by Kaoru Kurimoto) – and began with the concept of the Black Swordsman. Then I went from one idea to the next: If he's dark and nihilistic, what kind of character should I make him; and since ordinary swordsmen aren't interesting, how should I individualize him? Then from Dororo (by Osamu Tezuka) and Cobra (by Buichi Terasawa), which I like, I got the idea to attach something to one of his arms. As for the Dragon Slayer, large swords were featured in stories like Guin Saga and Pygmalio (by Shinji Wada), but those were just drawn as big swords. This didn't deal with what it would actually be like if somebody swung one, and if people witnessed it. And as I mentioned a bit go, this was the heyday of Hollywood films, so live-action was the entertainment king. They didn't have CG like they do today, so in both The Terminator and RoboCop, people were trying as hard as they could to act like machines. They had that sense of using physical acting to portray a superhuman, so I started out with the live-action ideas of if there really was a person with a big sword, how much muscle would he need, and if he swung it, what would that action be like?

>> No.23034421

why are all the men in the original conan stories ripped? even the wizards and thieves are more muscular than 90% of natty gymgoers today, for example: Thoth-Amon was decently buff in The Phoenix on The Sword, Xaltotun was actually muscular, The Prince of Thieves is built like a powerlifter, etc.

very enjoyable, a real pageturner, very funny at times. great feel-good story.

and more but don't want to spoil anything, i think the less you konw about a good book before going into it the better. it's about a guy moving into a new house and he figures out things

Idea of reincarnation and carma in religion, so if you born sick, poor or you life suck in general - you deserve it. Never heard of any charity by Chinese.
Clans are more like corporations and treated as such. Child in family is investment and should study and work hard to provide for elder parents later at cost of childhood and free time. Lack of platonic feelings.
Clear social darwinism in education.

Chinese culture seems more inhuman, but lookin at west now, filled with brown scum, nuclear families destroyed, and youth turned in pathetic piece of lards - I question myself should we have tolerance and humanism still.

Primal hunter and He who fights monsters are both utter garbage. How the fuck someone can read more than two books is beyond me. I couldn't stomach the latest book. At this point I only listen to the audiobook as background noise because I hate silence.
If I had anything else to listen to I'd go with that. Zogarth is such a self-important faggot, his writing hasn't improved, and I'd say it has actually gotten worse since the first book entry.
LitRPG is a dog genre in the first place, but for fuck's sake nothing new ever happens, and fighting some orange alien invader but not really fighting and pretending something big is coming later is just bad.
I just hope if you like this shit you know that even the lowest form of writing can get popular. Look at Fifty Shades of Grey or Twilight.

Same reason Americans are obsessed with pro-wrestling and are so loud. Most white americans have at least small amount of black DNA, they may not look black or mixed to some mexican but to a European person it will be immediatly obvious.

Inb4 but Europe is blacked.
Yes it is but not to the same extent, race mixing also exists but most mixed people are mostly first or second generation and are clearly distinct from whites (except maybe in France and Spain).

I'm convinced that the red rising series is going to be a massive normie hit once people find out about it:
1. easy to follow
2. pseudo court politics in a pretty interesting but simple stellar society
3. space battles, light saber duels, character variety, environment variety
4. rebelling against the oppressive government for "the good of the people"

However, I think they might find it difficult to consume because of the following too:
1. flirts quite a bit with "wait... is fascism... GOOD? democracy has... FLAWS?!?!?"
2. main character is a white male adonis figure who lords over everyone around him as an ubermensch war hero
3. lots of "maybe people belong where they are in society..."
4. too much humanizing of the nazi villains, too much vilifying of the democratic good guys

I got around to reading The Lost Metal there over the weekend. People that think even the worst projected climate change possible could even kill 5% of the global populate are fucking retarded. We will not go extinct directly due to climate change under any scenario. The only possible way climate change leads to our extinction would be from a war it provoked somehow, and that would be humans choosing to go to war.

India could go extinct and the only thing the world would notice is less plastic in the ocean and fewer scam phone calls. Uninhabitable is a myth. The only uninhabitable place on earth is Antarctica and even that is arguable as without governments actively restricting colonization I bet there would be quite a few more people eking out a survival there. Humans can live in just about any climate earth has to offer.

Furthermore, the hotter earth gets the move global convection does it's thing. For every 10° rise in temps at the artic circle the equator only raises 1°. If you look at the fossil records from when earth had much much more CO2 and was significantly hotter earth had more wild life by far, earth is healthier when it's hotter.

If you want to help the environment dedicate more land for wildlife, create continent spanning wildlife corridors, and clean the friggen pollution from the waterways and oceans. Banning carbon is literally nothing compared to any one of these alternatives.
