Hey /lit/, I was wondering if anyone here uses a Kindle? I have a couple of questions.

Are you able to transfer books from your computer to your kindle? I have a large collection of e-books, but it's such a pain to sit at the computer and read. I was thinking about getting a kindle if I could transfer my books over from computer to the kindle.

If this is possible, what e-book formats does the kindle accept? Pdf, Epub? Mobi?

Thanks

>> No.2296950

Yes. Mobi.

I've also been checking around for a e-reader, but Kindle doesn't support .pdf afaik. neither epub. If you're in America, try Nooks e-reader. If you're not, blargh.

>> No.2296953

It's super easy. I use calibre. Put all your ebooks in that then plug your kindle in and transfer them. I think it takes .mobi but calibre will convert the ebooks for you.

Calibre is a godsend for converting in bulk. It's easy as shit, OP. Calibre can even email the books to you if you don't want to connect the Kindle.

Dont judge me, I would have bought the used ones or gone to the library anyways.

Now I can't decide which Kindle to order.

Basic, touch, fire?

I'd think basic, but then again the touch is only $20 more and perhaps easier to navigate?

Opinions?

Kindle does support .pdf.

Sometimes the pages can be mega slow to update, but I don't know why. mostly it's OK.

Mine's full of ripped-off RPG rule books. Fuck if I'm paying for 4e.

I'd go for basic. The touch has more features, but you can't read it with one hand. Kindle Fire just isn't that great. It's not a true ebook reader.

Touch screen. I guess it comes in handy when you're looking in the Kindle store, but I'm never on there. It has a 3.5mm jack for audio books. It has text to speech. It has a 2 month battery life, compared to the 1 month of the basic. Those features just didn't do it for me. The 1 month life is more than plenty.

Debating between a nook and a kindle. Might have to just go to a Staples or something to compare them directly. They carry both lines, yes? Does Staples have the kindle basic? Didn't see it on their webpage.

I like the interface and side page-flip buttons for the Nook Touch, but I like Amazon's service in general and I think the Kindle just looks better than the Nook aesthetically. Not a fan of the Kindle ads though.

The ads aren't bothering at all. I didn't even know they sold Kindles in stores.

>> No.2297314

The "1-2 month" battery life is pretty sketchy marketing in general. They have an asterisks saying that's for .5 hours a day of use. In other words, 15-30 hours of use. The bar graphs they always use on webpage show it as being like 500x as long as a 12 hour battery life smartphone, which is just silly. Unless I'm missing something.

>> No.2297318

I read (and steal) the rulebooks, even though I haven't played the game for years. Reading the Serenity RPG at the moment. Now I can do it on the bus and the chickies will never know that I'm some kind of metageek.

I defy you to adjudicate in this matter.

>> No.2297321

>>2297314

This. I use mine pretty heavily, and it needs recharging once a week, minimum. More if you use 3g, which rapes the battery. In general - a long-haul flight runs the power bar down to a pretty worrying level.

Also, I've had mine for about 6 months, and the buttons are getting very sketchy, particularly the page turn button. I don't expect it will last me more than a year.

On the other hand, it cast fuck all, and I'll almost certainly replace it.

The "ads" are just screensavers when it's idle, and they also send you deals. Like free music, movies, and $1 book offers. Then various other kindle exclusive deals. I see no downside to this.

Kindle supports pdf and works quite well in landscape but long (>300pg) pdfs take a while to load and can stutter, unfortunately. You can break up the pdfs. Calibre does a pretty bad job on converting them, anyhow.

>> No.2297487

>>2297448

The Kindle touch handles page turning better.

The Nook Touch requires a sliding gesture to turn pages. The kindle does that as well, but also lets you turn pages just by taping the screen (Taping anywhere but the leftmost half-inch will go forward, and taping the extreme leftmost edge of the screen goes backwards.)

I was wanting to check because the Sony ereader can do font size changes for text PDFs, but it looks like the zoom-in option is the most common PDF approach. I'm looking at buying an ereader as a gift, and although I like the Sony one myself, I think the Kindle would have more appeal generally.

I think the Sony does this through a software back–end. PDFs are just image–collections, they normally don't have naturally alterable data behind them. This is the reason they're used for things like book proofs with publishers.
