it's nigh impossible for me to respect Indians, but then I realize that the Buddha was an Indian. And I certainly respect the Buddha, even if I disagree

I've always wanted to read VS Naipaul

It struck me today that I have never, nor ever felt the urge to, read an Indian author.

Supposed to be good I hope you enjoy it

RK Narayan is on my list, Ramayana, but more so The Guide

I think midnight children could be neat but.. something about Rushdie just doesn't catch my eye..

You guys are reading Indian literature written in English. The greatest literature comes from what's written in Indian languages.

Some places to get started for Indian writing: Perumal Murugan, MT Vasudevan Nair, Paul Zachariah, Vivek Shanbhag, Basheer, UR Ananthamurthy, plus countless others

Check out Aleph Press if you'd like to check out great works from specific languages. They have collections of top short stories from langauges like Malayalam, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, etc

In terms of the best modern Indian writing in English, the winner of this year's Commonwealth Short Story Prize will be Indian, so watch out for that in a couple months.

A House for Mr Biswas is one of my favorite books ever. I can’t wait to read A Bend in the River. Naipaul wasn’t afraid to use English to its full potential. His very masculine style makes me have so much respect for him. The irony of Biswas is that there is such a feeling of hopelessness and obscurity in the book that actually is the very thing that inspires the reader. The book is both hilarious and incredibly sad while never once being self-indulgent. He is an amazing writer. Tagore is also great as well as khushwant singh. R K Ram not so much from the little Ive read.
