This year I made a list of Books I've read and most are even relevant to this thread.

Best Books I've read
>Warwolf
>Monster Hunter Guardian
>Monster Hunter Bloodlines
I've read all the MHI Books in like a week, which was nice. Wasn't this exited about anything in a long time. Even though the Momoires books aren't as good as Larry Correias books.

Biggest Letdowns were
>Things have gotten worse since we last spoke by Eric LaRocca
I bought it because the Cover looked good and it was a bit hyped. The writing itself was very enjoyable but the story just fizzled out and it's neither disturbing nor shocking. I won't buy anything from that author again.
>Child of God by Cormac McCarthy
I've wanted to read Blood Meridian but didn't got into it too well so I thought this short book might help me to get into McCarthy. Waste of time it was. It's a bit like August Underground but for 1970 sensibilities. Would have been better off if I just forced myself through Blood Meridian

Biggest Surprise
>The Haar by David Sodergren
I expected "The Thing" in Scotland but what I got was the sheer Terror of being old. I liked it so much that I bought the "The Navajo Nightmare" right after which I also enjoed but it made me respect the Author a whole lot less.
>Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis
I had this book lying around for over 10 years now, the first time I read it I stopped somewhere in the middle before it gets "dark" and thought it was a book about teenagers for teenagers. So imagine my shock when I actually finished it this time. For reasons I don't understand the "snuff movie" and the "bathroom" scene actually had an emotional impact on me. I don't know why this book hit me that hard but I will read more of Ellis work in 2024.

post your lists too.

I posted mine last thread but it's pretty barebones lol.

Top 5 of the year for me:
>Dark Age
>Golden Son
Red Rising Saga as a whole was an absolute gem, some of the most enjoyable scifi I've read recently
>Deadhouse Gates
Best I've seen of Malazan yet, I thought House of Chains would take its spot but the ending ruined that
>Dune
Enough said lol
>Ghost Brigades
Just an all around solid military scifi with a very cool idea about the consciousness of a fugitive being used as a base for a soldier in hopes of finding out crucial info said fugitive would only know

Biggest letdown:
>Name of the Wind
All the praise I've seen for KKC online probably led me to expect more than Mr. Piggy is capable of. This is probably one of the biggest wastes of time when it comes to what I've read this year.

Hidden Gem:
>Cyberpunk 2077: No coincidences
Although this isn't a perfect book as someone who adores the game it's such an excellent tie in novel. Highly recommend checking out to anyone who also enjoyed the game and Edgerunners wasn't enough spinoff goodness for you.

>>22888815
Oh yes one addendum, stuff I've read before like ASOIAF, HP, Witcher novellas etc weren't eligible for my top 5 list. If not then GRRM would take most of the spots on the list lol.

I've been reading the three body problem and I really hate Cheng Xin, because it's a character who feels no guilt or shame for the atrocities that she is responsible for.
Does this character get better or does she keep being thrust into positions of power by suicidal humans so she can accurately genocide the earth?

Is it also true that the author has a vendetta against asian women? somehow he's portrayed asian women as malicious devils.

Best:
>True names
>A Fire upon the deep
These two books cemented Vernor Vinge as one of my favorite authors, I actually decided to read him based on a suggestion an anon made on /lit/. Thanks anon.
>Roadside picnic
A great other side of the stalker universe, it shows a different but similar world the ones I'm familiar with from the metro and stalker games. Really loved it.

Letdowns:
>Metamorphosis
He's a roach omggg so wacky, read a summary or watch a video on it. Skip this trash.
>Ubik
PKD blows up any cool ideas he has if he writes for long enough.
>Lord of light
Not what I was expecting, bit of a wasted universe.
>Art of seduction
I've never read j Greene before this, he's overblown and a bit cringe but not horrible, it's more an exploration of literature and historical figures than some super secret guide to sex xd

Surprise:
>Thin air
I thought it'd be cringe at first, but I really liked it.
>Akira
Lots of stuff is missing from the movie, glad I've taken the time to read the Manga.

This year I read:
>The Lurking Fear and Other Stories
It was great, small collection but lots of gems I'd never read like the title story and The Temple. And got to read Shadow over Innsmouth again. Lovecraft rules.
>Berserk The Flame Dragon Knight
The writing or translating in this is stiff as a board but the story is more Berserk and it lives up, loved it.
>Berserk
Yes this year I read all 42 Miura volumes. I went going in already knowing Berserk rocks, I'd seen the anime, but I was still completely unprepared for just how much the manga fucking rocks. Iconic for a reason.
>Fools Errand, Golden Fool, Fools Fate
It was a true pleasure to get back to Fitz.
>Valdor Birth of the Imperium
I enjoy Unification Era 40k lore and this was a nice helping of it. Not much to write home about.
>Bless Me Ultima
Lovely little story about a kid in New Mexico torn between his indigenous heritage and his catholic heritage.
>Passage to Dawn
I been having way more fun with Drizzt than I evert expected to but this may be where the train finally runs out of steam for me.
>Last Days
Friend recommended this lil slice of horror to me like it would blow my mind and it didn't but it was a good bit of fun
>Journey of the Mind
Solid little book on the development of the mind. Gets a bit woo at the end but it was very good.
>The Second Apocalypse
The constant Bakker posting on here, which was much more constant at the start of the year, got me curious enough to try this out. I expected to hate it but I ended up marathoners the whole thing and now it's one of my all time faves. Bakker really is king.
>Unfinished Tales by Tolkein
Exquisite. Shame how much is pure Christopher Tolkein autism over minor lore points instead of letting his dads writing speak for itself, but truly there is no besting JRR.
>Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Lame. It's cult classic status must be a result of the times cause there's very little here. Not without amusement but just so standard
>Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas
Fantastic book. Recommend to all. Especially you chuds.
>The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn
Reading these for the sake of my dad who loves them. I have to admit it's starting to get a little bit good, Dad always claims it only *really* starts at book 5, but if you have to get 3000 pages in before it starts to get good that means it's not good imo.
>Gladiator
Super fun lil golden age sci fi novel. The first superhero story and it's an existential nightmare. Loved it.
>The Bible
Been reading this in bits for like five years finally finished at the start of this one. It sucked. The wisdom books are great. Ecclesiastes, Job, Genesis, thems are all timers. But man the rest blew. Even the Gospels I found pretty lame and schizophrenic which was a lot down. But now I've done it.

>Reverend Insanity = Literally about an a-moral bugman killing/consooming/cultivating
>Lord of The Mysteries = Hard to into asian steampunk with potion based class acquisition, achievement and crafting progression with un-lockable magical items and sekret tarot organizations because it wasn't already confusing enough.
>Neuromancer = Decent cyberspunk i'm putting together a team novel
>Hyperion = Interplanetary high tech trooning
>The Prince of Nothing = Bakker is for fags and fags are for Bakker. simple as
>The Wandering Inn = Stay at home moms power fantasy with a main character whos most prominent power is complaining while being a pacifist.
>Between Two Fires = Heaven Vs hell but in medievil FRANCE!
>Mother of Learning = Time loop and like all of the subgenre goes literally nowhere over and over again, has a decent magic system that some find mediocre and a main characters sister that is annoying as fuck.
>Cradle = Every second novel is a dud in the series with a birdbath of a main character. Only decent thing is the fights that get stale real quick because it does not take long to realize they are all ill conceived magical games of uno.
>I Shall Seal the Heavens = Proto xianxia at its worst, MC gets kidnapped into strong but lowly down on its luck sect. Queue haughty young masters, saving face and swilling ginseng infused tiger penis soup by the gallon.
>A Song of Ice and Fire = Fantastical medieval degeneracy where the characters who should live die and the characters who should die live. Also author is too busy getting fat and old to finish the series.
>The Poppy War = Fem-C gets accepted to 20th century china-esque martial academy and gets looked down upon while struggling to overcome amidst pseudo researched equally vintage china political bullshit.

>>22889546
>Azarinth Healer = Starts good but fizzles hard midway. Author also makes the main character a low key lesbian because they clearly have no idea hat to do with their love life.
>Primal Hunter = MC+background is so impossibly nonsensical that he's not even cannon in his own setting.
>He Who Fights with Monsters = every character that isn't the MC is just there to be amazed at how smart Jason is while he tells them shit they already know before reminding them (incorrectly i might add) that 'Oh you have no idea".
>Dungeon Crawler Carl = The MC's sidekick (A cat named 'Princess Donut') is so much smarter than Carl (the MC) that every scene the two are in is eye-gougingly painful. This would not be so much of a problem if such scenes did not constitute the majority of the series.
>System Universe = After the initial premise is established it turns into how to pander to followers at a snails pace AKA; 'Filler McFiller Face - The Excessively Extended Sleep Inducing Saga'.
>Dissonance = MC gets god fucked more then once as he goes about becoming a man/bear/goat/pig/axolotl hybrid who also has many super sekret identities.
>Defiance of the Fall = Brain dead MC with very-much-just-barely opposed kingdom building with a wafer thin cultivation system
>Iron Prince = edgy school setting with even edgier MC who has lightning powers and no discernible challenges what so ever.

I only recently started reading, before that chart I'd had only read like AP lit books (Wuthering heights, gatsby, scarlet letter) and some Gothic literature for a class (I wanted to meet goth girls in college, I didn't meet any).

I work normal hours and normal days, I read on my one hour lunch break and atleast an hour or two when I get home. On weekends I can read for 3-6 hours straight.

I also listen to the audio book at my reading speed (1.5-1.7x) in place of reading or at the same time. This helps me keep making progress. Oh and I take Ritalin for sleepiness.

A 600 page berserk volume I can finish in 1-1.5hrs, I read lord of light (300pgs) in 3 days (I only read like 60 pages the first day).

I am a bit of a zoomer content addict so I always have podcasts, videos etc playing 24/7 in my life, only recently I've replaced some of it with books. My job also requires excellent reading comprehension (material scientist).

Oh also I only rent my books from the library, I have 12 checked out currently. When people request holds on the books I have, I can't renew them so I HAVE to read them ASAP. Kind of helps with motivation, to know someone is stealing the book from me soon and I haven't read it.

Anyways take Ritalin or something.

i think i understand why people get so worked about this book. you really have to convince yourself that it was worth reading after you've finished it. that said, there's enough loosely connected themes that you can kind of imagine a coherent plot.
the main issue i had with it was that severian being a torturer was not compelling. i got vibes of the black company from the book of the new sun, but the whole "go around executing people" just didn't feel as cool as "go around fighting wars for people."

>> No.22889792

It means what you probably think it means. He checks out books and then people request that the library holds them when they are returned, so that they may check them out before they are checked out by others. In this situation usually you are not allowed to renew your time checking out the book, in order to make things fair for others who wish to read the book as well.
Also not that anon but I have found some books to be easier to read in audiobook format while doing other monotonous tasks like exercise cooking or work.

This trilogy details the emergence of Anasûrimbor Kellhus, a brilliant monastic warrior, as he takes control of a holy war and the hearts and minds of its leaders. Kellhus exhibits incredible powers of prediction and persuasion, which are derived from deep knowledge of rationality, cognitive biases, and causality, as discovered by the Dûnyain, a secret monastic sect. As Kellhus goes from military leader to divine prophet, Drusas Achamian, the sorcerer who mentored Kellhus, comes to realize that his student may well be the harbinger of the Second Apocalypse.

Golden Son is better in every way than Red Rising, which is what everyone has told me. Brown has clearly improved and learned a lot. This time it's space opera and while it doesn't focus on being military science fiction, it's certainly present. One of the biggest differences is how much more expansive it is and how much it's willing to do. I wasn't able to take the first book seriously, and I still can't with this one, but I can appreciate what it's doing. This is exceedingly commercial genre fiction done well. It knows what it is, focuses on that, and doesn't pretend otherwise.

Darrow remains insufferable, though I have to wonder how much that's because it's in first person. I get the feeling that for many others what I find insufferable may be relatable or even appealing. My main problem is that he's a character rather than a person. What I mean by that is that he's whatever the current scene requires him to be regardless of any other consideration. The same goes for every other aspect of the novel, but the weaknesses in characterization are the most readily apparent and the hardest to overlook for me. This book is among those that has that greatest gap between what I think about the protagonist and the book overall. Several other characters are better, but it wouldn't be the same story if Darrow weren't the protagonist.

This is a strange book in that it feels entirely crafted to reader considerations, yet still works well. It's not organic at all in the way it plays with reader expectations, however it does know what those expectations are and what to do with them. It's all very calculated in its craft. I don't know how sustainable that is, as with anything that relies upon novelty, but it suffices in the short term. The question Brown seems to ask himself for every scene is "What would make this most entertaining for the reader?". So, if you're reading this for anything other than base entertainment, I think you're doing it wrong. That puts a hard cap on how highly I can think of it, but I consider that entirely separate from enjoyment, and not at all relevant for most.

Despite almost everything I saw about this book being much better, I still had considerable doubt, but I was wrong. Even so, I'm keeping my expectations in check. However, as I've written before, I'm not concerned with novelty most times. If someone writes a formula that I enjoy, I don't care if they do it over and over again, as long as I'm still enjoying it. That's not something I would want everyone else to do, but it's what I do. As I wrote, I can't take this book seriously, though I can appreciate it. I don't find it meaningful, but not everything has to be. Sometimes fun things are simply fun and don't need to be anything more than that. At the end I realized that I had laughed enough in joy and was amused enough by its ridiculousness to give it a 4 rather than a 3.5 rounded up.

Yes they are good.

Go read the first one and see, I don't have a taste for fantasy really but I love the games and really liked the first book.

It even made me laugh (the part where Gerald reads a letter).

The only weird part was reading Geralt do his own shit and not what I wanted (serious).

I'm on the last book and so far there have been maybe two gay rape scenes in the entire series that have any detail at all and even those barely go into detail beyond the screencap.
Kellhus is basically "what if Paul was a sociopath" and the group he's from are absolutely inspired by Bene Gesserit.

i'm not sure if i like the powder mage trilogy. my interest has started to wane by the third book. the whole concept of the steampunk/victorian era magic world just doesn't instill a sense of wonder. the military campaign in the second book was probably the highlight of the trilogy for me.

I've seen mixed opinions here and in the group. Though a lot of the negativity seems to have been silly stuff or complaints on why it didn't end at being 3 books total. It's to been seen how it goes. I'll probably get Red God when it becomes available on NetGalley however many months before its publication date. I'll have to see when exactly they'd prefer I post about it at the time. There probably isn't all that much reason to post it right away. This of course assumes that I keep enjoying it long enough to get there. We'll see. I'll be reading Morning Star next. I don't know when I'll be continuing the series after that. There's so much else to read.

>Next question: what insect? Commentators say cockroach, which of course does not make sense. A cockroach is an insect that is flat in shape with large legs, and Gregor is anything but flat: he is convex on both sides, belly and back, and his legs are small. He approaches a cockroach in only one respect: his coloration is brown. That is all. Apart from this he has a tremendous convex belly divided into segments and a hard rounded back suggestive of wing cases. In beetles these cases conceal flimsy little wings that can be expanded and then may carry the beetle for miles and miles in a blundering flight. Curiously enough, Gregor the beetle never found out that he had wings under the hard covering of his back. (This is a very nice observation on my part to be treasured all your lives. Some Gregors, some Joes and Janes, do not know that they have wings.) Further, he has strong mandibles. He uses these organs to turn the key in a lock while standing erect on his hind legs, on his third pair of legs (a strong little pair), and this gives us the length of his body, which is about three feet long. In the course of the story he gets gradually accustomed to using his new appendages—his feet, his feelers. This brown, convex, dog-sized beetle is very broad. I should imagine him to look like this:

In the original German text the old charwoman calls him Mistkäfer, a "dung beetle." It is obvious that the good woman is adding the epithet only to be friendly. He is not, technically, a dung beetle. He is merely a big beetle. (I must add that neither Gregor nor Kafka saw that beetle any too clearly.)

Sometimes I'll stop entirely and think over what I've reading. It's not unusual for me to spend many hours reading, or even the entire day at times. >Murtagh’s lip curled, and he felt an urge to throw a boot at the man. Not only were the verses badly composed and badly sung—no bard would have dared sing so off-key at court for fear of being beaten—but they were wrong.
“He would have lost if not for me,” Murtagh muttered, thinking of Eragon. And yet, aside from those who had been present in Galbatorix’s throne room at the end, no one knew and no one cared. He and Thorn had quit the capital following the king’s death, preferring to remove themselves from civilization rather than contend with the hostility of an ignorant public.
>It had been the right choice. Murtagh still believed that. But it meant they lost the opportunity to defend themselves in the court of popular opinion. And if Eragon or Nasuada or the elves’ queen, Arya, had spoken in defense of him or Thorn, to explain the role they had played in killing Galbatorix and Shruikan, word of it had yet to reach Murtagh.
>The fact sat badly with him. Perhaps the truth needed more time to spread among the common folk. Or perhaps Eragon, Nasuada, and Arya were content to let the world think the worst of him, to use him as a convenient scapegoat, a monster in the dark that might focus people’s fears and leave the three of them free to govern as they pleased. The thought made his stomach twist.
>Either way, as far as most folk were concerned, Eragon was the greatest hero who had ever lived, and none could stand before him.
>Murtagh snorted softly. Hardly. But there was no fighting a song or story once it became popular. So often the truth bent to what felt right. At least the troubadour hadn’t bothered to describe Eragon’s supposed triumph over Murtagh and Thorn. At that, Murtagh really did think he would have thrown his boot.

I read loads of new releases a few years ago and there was so many books themed around revolutions but almost all of them did the american liberal thing of just going from bad ruler to good instead of examining the overthrow of monarchy or anything like that.
IMO it's probably a follow on from Hunger Games and the like dominating YA where they have the similar plots of revolution. I generally avoid epic fantasy so I might've missed trends there. Also tumblr and self-pub are clear influences that you can see filtering through to the published world, lots of published fic is practically ripping off stuff from those spheres.
Scifi had quite a lot of books about 'shit jobs', I don't like Becky Chambers but she really exemplified the trend. Also a lot of atrocious Elon Musk references lol (Melinda Snodgrass is the only author I recall who was smart enough to use him negatively)

I don't care too much about tone, whether it's light or dark, so long as the world is very well-thought out and has lots of history, and the characters are well-written and easy to get attached to. Bakker freely admits much of Second Apocalypse is just Dune + Tolkein + Iron Men and Saints.
But it's not where you take it from, it's where you take it to. Hundreds of people have written Dune knockoffs and Tolkein knockoffs and frequently even merge them (Aiel from WoT, faceless men in asoiaf, etc).
But imo only Bakker has used them to craft something that reaches the same level Tolkein and Herbert reached.
It's not popular right now because of its difficulty and its prolific rape but I feel confident in years to come Second Apocalypse will be considered a classic. Like Moby Dick.

Eragon actually was literally fucking god and jesus and could have taken the throne and told the public whatever he wanted and they would have believed it. He was just "fated" to leave the land because Paolini was too retarded to clean up magical radiation on Vroengard with the name of names, and he wanted to rip off the elves leaving for the grey havens. Nasuada was also in love with Murtagh and would have made sure the truth was known. This is the dumbest, most contrived conflict imaginable. I don't think I could get through this book without much difficulty because it seems as though Paolini has forgotten the story he wrote. There is absolutely no way the new rulers concerned with justice and the truth would have let people believe Murtagh didn't play a pivotal role in overthrowing the previous tyrant.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I enjoyed the first book in the Alex Veras series which is a good sign since I enjoyed the Veras series quite a bit. The magic system(Drucraft) was pretty interesting in my opinion and I enjoyed the fact that the setting is featuring a British magical aristocracy versus magical mega corpo's kind of theme. 8/10 would suggest reading if you've got nothing better to do.

Do you have any suggestions for the 24 books I will read this year?

question for the new year: why in the fuck is there so little quality smut in science fiction and fantasy?

you can tell a good story while titilating the reader, comics have done it, movies too and even video games
so where are all the good books?
are we doomed to rely on fanfiction sites to get our kicks?

recommended if you like Mask and have nothing else to read.
it was written over a decade earlier, is shorter, and isn't as well developed or polished, but that dreamy dark fantasy is still right there

Just had this idea for a story, and I need to know if it's been done before:
>starts out as a sort of medieval low-fantasy story
>in the big tweest it's revealed that they're actually on a giant colony ship headed for a distant star system, with its creators having decided that keeping the colonists in a permanent medieval society would help with having them endure the multi-generation journey
>main conflict ensues because the ship's automated maintenance systems have begun to break down

Mixing fantasy with scifi never ends well. The moment you reveal that it is actually a scifi ship all the fantasy elements will fall apart, readers who invested in fantasy story will hate you for it. It's fine for a standalone book/story.

yes, cause the ringworld and fleet of worlds series have a lot of faults but his short story collections are mostly fun one off stories
> Any themes he focuses on?
neutron star and crashlander are mostly space exploration and adventure; the long arm of gil hamilton takes place in a near future earth where organ transplantation is perfect and some people are now stealing body parts to sell in the black market and deals with some of the consequences of this; tales of known space has both space exploration and some social themes like people medicating madness (mostly the former, though)

if you want a light read with some nice world building i'd definitely recommend them

A lot of Bakker names are inspired by ancient Mesopotamian names which do look pretty ludicrous to us. I think it works for making the really old things seem really old, more recent people and places are much more familiar sounding.

For one thing I was unprepared for how good the characters are. Farnese and Serpico are wonderful characters. Plus the scale of the adventure and how the world changes over the course of the series really took me by surprise.
