I don't read for entertainment so murakami is dead to me. He's the equivalent of reading boilerplate mystery novels.

Do you need to read the whole trilogy in order or you can just jump into A Wild Sheep Chase knowing nothing about it?

Yes, you can read any book of the rat trilogy without knowing about the others.

You couldn't even get the first two in english without jumping through hoops until recently, all three are pretty standalone other than the narrator and the Rat being the same.

Dare I say that his early novels are kinda meh but also pretty interesting to read for reasons that escape me.

Thank you very much.

Why is this book different from the others? Like, why should I read A wild sheep chase instead of The wind-up bird chronicle or Kafka on the shore?

It does the Murakami thing without going full blown...Murakami. It's tasteful.

You don't like picrel? I kinda liked the intro in a wild sheep chase where he talked about the clothes of his ex wife lol.

I like his short stories most of all. I haven't read anything since dropping After Dark like a chapter or two in. I have to be in a mood for full tilt Murakami. Kafka a best

I like The Wild Sheep Chase as I like most of his novels, but I LOVE Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I also really love some of his short stories.

Okay so would any of you read a Murakami novel with an incel protagonist? Basically all of the boxes from this bingo ticked except for the one with the mysterious woman and weird porn instead of weird sex? Because that's basically my life...
