How does Wizard Knight stack up against Gene Wolfe's other works? I read it a few years ago and didn't really feel that invested in it. Wondering if it's worth checking out his other stuff or if he's maybe just not for me.

What are the chances there are new sci-fi and fantasy masterpieces out there right now, but they were lost in the flood of self published works? Ya ever thought about that, hmm? There are many great authors who weren't discovered until long after their deaths ya know.

I read them in publication order, switching back and forth, but I don't think it's that important. He's a worse writer (though he gets better) and it can ruin the flow a little.
They help plug a few holes in the lore, but there's so much of it you won't miss a few. There's one character death that I couldn't believe was in a spin-off, that might leave you scratching your head when it gets mentioned in the Erikson books, but that's all I can think of.

The point is Current Year. Where one draws a line is obviously going to vary from person to person, but the further one moves back from Current Year the more likely something considered progressive at the time might be considered conservative or neutral in tone by readers now. If you're looking for a more objective definition, that's a fool's errand when the entire point of the first definition I gave was to be a purely practical "this is what the people asking for it generally want" thing. It could be shortened to "something they find un-pozzed, and they know it when they see it" but you'd probably find that even less satisfying.

My point was that people draw the line in different places, have different ideas of what constitutes "progressive/conservative enough" ideas and values, etc. Best one can do is point at things which on average will be viewed as one or the other. The definitions were also very content-focused and have very little to do with people liking or disliking a work — plenty of liberals like Narnia, plenty of conservatives like sf/f with broadly progressive attitudes. People only seem to really loathe the other side's fiction when it's shit, extremely aggressive in presentation of its ideology, or doesn't have much meat to it aside from the ideological purpose.

I did when I was in middle school (?). It's for children and it shows, the plot and characters are good but it's nothing groundbreaking. If I recall correctly, the story takes place in an AU with demons and mages have to pact with them in order to use magic. In order to control them, the mage must know the demon's name but the demon can subvert this if they know the mage real name. There's two protagonists, one is your typical boo hoo magic boy and the other is a demon, the latter's chapters are narrated in first-person while the former are narrated in third-person.
I think it was ok if you just want a "orphan suffers and is looking for something so he does magic" kind of story.

I'm reading Wheel of Time, and I'm started on Book 9. Winter's Heart. And I'm just curious, what the hell does it mean for Elayne to take the Lion throne? The narrative keeps emphasizing that. she has to TAKE the Lion throne. But like, her mom just had it some months ago. The throne should be rightfully hers through birthright. I don't get what's stopping her from just moving into the queen's chambers and announcing herself queen.

Also, I swear Robert Jordan has a weird idea of what's important to emphasize or not. There are a hundred mentions of women sniffing in derision. Half a hundred mentions of pouty and petulant mouths. A few dozen mentions of Nynaeve tugging her braid. And a dozen mentions of Elayne looking down her nose. But then he kills of a fairly major dark friend in like two pages, with only a couple mentions of his name, and not even emphasizing who he was. If you're not really paying attention, you could miss it. I feel like he really dropped the ball there.

Also, I'm still not sure why Dashiva tried to kill rand. in the last book. It comes out of nowhere, and then seems to be unresolved. I guess I'll find out later. But I'm very unsatisfied right now. In fact, I'm starting to see why these middle books feel like a drag. It's because in the first like 5 or so books, all the plots more or less resolved themselves within the same book. But ever since the bowl of the winds was introduced, it's like all of the plotlines are tattered. Remaining unresolved until future books, where it's still yet unresolved. The mysteries keep piling up. Except that the books are so long I forget what the mysteries are by the time they're resolved. So when Robert Jordan resolves the mysteries with a light touch, I'm just like "wait, was that something I should care about?" "Wait, who was that name again?" "Wait, what was their motive before?"

If he spent a little more time reinforcing important details, and less time mentioning who vomited, patted their skirts, and sniffed, then maybe the plot would be easier to follow and more enjoyable.

Anyway, what the fuck does it mean to "take" the Lion throne? Take from who? No one occupies it.

Just finished this. What did I think of it? Well I liked it; just like the first novel. Best way I could describe this series is Edgy Horror Adventure Fantasy That Isn't Subversive Or Nihilistic. I generally don't enjoy reading 'edgy' literature anymore since 99% of it these days IS nihilistic and/or subversive which bores me to tears. Or it's edgy for the sake of being edgy with nothing else beyond that. But this series is different despite all the edge. I'm not even sure what type of anons I would recommend these books too. It has a very strong S&S vibe without technically being S&S (normal male protag gets dropped into a world of absolute horror and is forced to become a savage killer so he can rescue his woman and find a way to escape).

True. I was talking about Jaichim Carridin btw. AKA "Bors." Now that I think about it, In book 6(or was it 7? They run together), there was a good chunk of text dedicated to setting up a new scheme of his. New plotting. The bad guy visits him and basically tells him "you failed for the last time. Do it right this time!" in so many words. Then, off screen, he somehow fails. One of his plots goes awry. I don't know which, because RJ doesn't seem to care about explaining which random henchmen was ordered by which random higher ranked darkfriend. But SOMEHOW he fails again.

Then in book 8, there's like 2 pages of introducing a new dark friend by way of killing the one that failed. And the new guy doesn't even recognize the old guy. I guess that's supposed to be some kind of irony. But I still feel like there should have been a more satisfying end to the guy.

There's probably more text dedicated to Min's tight britches, than what the dark friend got at the end.

Yeah. A few mentions of his drinking was dropped in previous books. So it's supposed to be an ironic end that he died in drink. But his drinking wasn't really a highlight of his character. That could be it. I'm not sure exactly. But someone knew about the whole store of Angreal and other old artifacts that were kept in Ebou Dar. Which I believe ended up being the same storeroom that the bowl was kept in. So they all seemed to merge into this single shitstorm at the storeroom. The Golem side seems to have made off with a number of things. But Elayne and Nynaeve leave with the bowl, and a large share of the stowed artifacts.

Another observation. Elayne is a lot taller than I imagine. I don't know why, but I always think of her as average height. But book 9 reminds us of relative height once again. Here's the height rank for the main girls.

1. Aviendha is the tallest.
2. Elayne is under Avienda, but not by much surprisingly. They're close in height. When Elayne "looks down her nose", that's a literal description when she's looking at many characters.
3. Min? I'm not totally sure, but her height isn't emphasized, so I think she's somewhere in the middle.
4. Birgitte. I'm shocked to hear her described as shorter than Elayne. IDK, I just figured since she's older and more experienced, she would be taller too. But no, Birgitte is average height. Maybe even a little under average.
5. Egwene. She's "of a height" with Nynaeve, but slightly taller I think. Since her smallness is never emphasized.
6. Nynaeve. She seems to get shorter with every book. More and more a gremlin. She's noticeably below average. Near to Moiraine.
7. Moiraine is of course the smallest. Nearly dwarfen.(technically, people can be described as dwarfs, if they're 4'10'' and under)

I got to the part where Elayne is suddenly summoned, while she's in a room of all these important people. And she has to undress to change clothes too. During the sequence, all the girls line up to block the view from the guys as she changes. She notes how the shield of women isn't doing much, because none of them are as tall as her, including Birgitte. Merilille not even coming up to Elayne's shoulder. The funny thing is, they could have just woven a visual barrier using the power. There were like 4 saidar users there. Merilille a seasoned Aes Sedai. Surely she knows how to conceal. But then again, maybe not. What Aes Sedai know seems to vary a lot. Especially considering how long it takes for them to each the Shawl. You would think they would all know more of the same tricks.

oh, I'm silly. It's actually the beginning of book 8 that described their heights. That's how much the books are mushing together for me. Anyway, I found the text:

This is interesting text, because a hand is only a few inches. Like 3-5 I guess? Let's go with 4, because that's what the wiki says. Anyway, to be *almost* a hand taller, that means she comes up shorter than a hand. So let's say Birgitte is 3 inches taller than Nynaeve with raised heels. I suppose the heels aren't very tall, because she still has to perform as a Warder. Birgitte tends to dress practically for the most part, save special occasions. So let's say her boots are an inch higher than normal boots. Meaning that Birgitte is only about 2 inches taller than Nynaeve. Less, if we assume her heels are even taller. But I doubt that's the case.

Also, while I was searching for text in book 9, I stumbled into text that's ahead of where I'm currently reading. But it's relevant.

I can see Elayne foregoing the shield to avoid shaming. Since she's soaking up all the Aiel stuff from Aviendha. But the others? Doubtful. What would Merilille know about Aiel customs? Or even care, if she did know? What difference would it make for Merilille to weave a screen, as opposed to using their bodies as screen? But it would seem to me that she just barely got the buttons undone before they ladies make a screen with their bodies. It doesn't take time to weave a screen at all. Rand regularly erects a screen in a second. Merilille doesn't understand what's going on, which is all the more reason why she would weave a screen, rather than use her body to screen. Because she wouldn't know that the modesty is shaming in Aiel culture. From Merilille's perspective, all she knows is that Taim and the Asha'man are in the room, and they're unified at keeping Elayne modest. The most expedient and effective way to do that, is weave a screen. Not try to block Elayne with your body, when you're hardly reach Elayne's shoulder in height.

I'm reading the third Wheel of Time Dragon Reborn and Rand just killed a bunch of people. Like maybe they were dark friend illusions or disguises but I feel like till now it's been fairly clear if something was fake or not and their arrival was treated totally matter of factly.
I'm reading this for the sake of my dad who loves them and until now I've found them fairly intolerable but this is the first one where I feel embers of interest sparking.

The narrative constantly reminds the reader that the experience of seasoned Aes Sedai could match or exceed an Asha'man in skill with the power. Men can overtake women in raw strength since they're so much stronger. But weaving takes a certain level of dexterity. And that dexterity is not limited or bolstered by one's power. For example, how one of the Kin manages to shield Elayne despite her power being minuscule. She manages this because her shield is flexible, so Elayne can't simply break it by flexing her power.
Someone who is as old as Merilille should have a lot of experience and be deft at using many weaves. So assuming that she knows how to make a screen, it should be as quick or quicker than walking.
Take for example how when the characters were learning their powers, they would sometimes forget they can just float a cup over to them in stead of walking to get it. That's how much faster it is to use the power than the body.

Also female channelers regularly pull weaves out as quick as throwing a knife. Or prepare weaves in a second, ready to use.

They turn around BEFORE the girls make a screen with their bodies. So clearly, going "overkill" with modesty was not a concern for the women. If she was going to make a screen with her body, then she might as well make one with the power. The power that she's already holding by the way.

There can only be two reasons why she didn't use the weave.
A. She doesn't know it. In which case, the white tower really dropped the ball there.
B. Robert Jordan just didn't think of it. Or perhaps he did think of it, but decided against it, because narratively the body shield has more impact.
