We don't know what Ketch sounds like. This line isn't doing anything. Maybe one of your dudes recognizes that someone is attempting Ketch. Also inconsistent with later demonstrations of the language "p'vaa" isn't a bundle of consonants- though you just said their attempts were a "discordant bundle" of them. Simple continuity errors can throw readers off big time.

Why is Pavian making a big deal out of them mispronouncing his name if it's already been established they don't speak his language well? Just seems like filler. Is it important to keep this in? I don't find it humorous since it is a cliche. Maybe this is something you really enjoy and think your readers will really enjoy too. But beyond personal opinion- if you want this interaction to land you have to do something different. I don't know what. Maybe having an understanding of the language before we see them unable to reproduce certain phonemes makes it expected they would not be able to say Pavion's name.

I can't finish this. Having a character use the word Fuck in every sentence he says is distracting. He only needs to say it once or twice- if no one else is using similar foul language. It's exhausting and I suspect you are treating this as illustrative of his personality perhaps another instance of humor that doesn't land. We get it after 2 times- I promise. Write dialog and show you aren't being lazy and uncreative. We do not understand his frustration nor will him saying fuck help us. Storytelling has to do the work so that we're saying fuck along with him rather than recoiling. Hope this helps. generally speaking interesting things are happening.

I am also trying to convey Brod's overall low opinion of the Ketch. He is large, strong, and civilized. They are short, weak, and uncivilized. He's not foaming at the mouth with racist hatred for them, but he does not respect them. That is also the intent of the "assuming the position to defecate" line. The manner in which squat to casually sit is culturally unfamiliar to Brod and it reminds him of somebody squatting to shit, rather than a dignified position to assume in formal company.

Brod speaks it (the dialect he is familiar with) when greeting them and I describe its characteristic. I don't find the "P'vaa" bit inconsistent because this is their attempt at saying his name. It's not a word from their dialect which, to Brod, sounds like random consonants mashed together, but I don't mean that their dialect literally has no vowels or that they are incapable of pronouncing vowels.

Pavian is a noble and acts self-entitled. This is why he takes offense to barbarians they're trying to colonize being unable to pronounce his name correctly. He is also habitually crass and brash which irks Brod. His frequent use of "fuck" is intentional, not just some random attempt by me to be edgy. If he annoys you, good, he annoys Brod too.

The point isn't I hate HIM because he says fuck a lot. The point is I hate your writing because he says fuck and it doesn't fit my experience of what's appropriate. Do you see the difference? I have nothing against the word fuck- it makes sense in a lot of contexts, it's fine for characters to use 'fuck' often- but you have to have a story there where the use makes sense- which you don't. One of the reasons storytellers employ "fuck" is to heighten stakes, heighten emotions, and illustrate tension- all of which must be earned through more storytelling. A scene can open with a guy we the readers know nothing about yelling "FUCK FUCK FUCK, THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ME" into a phone and I immediately understand. I don't have to know anything else about this guy to understand that's a meaningful use of the word 'fuck'. The stakes are high- they're going to kill him, emotions are appropriately high- he thinks they're going to kill him- and tensions are high- we think they might kill him. Do you see how easy it is to make 'fuck' make sense? You have to do the emotional onboarding for us to understand Pav's use of 'fuck'. Explaining it in a comment to me doesn't fix anything. Fix the dialog, or find a way to write the story so we are onboard with Pav when he says 'fuck'. Part of why you might be missing this is because you've spent more time with these characters and sentences than we the readers have. This is a common problem for new writers. When you proofread your work try to snap out of your familiarity with it and experience it as though it were the first time you read it.

Do they live in a fantasy world? Are they nobles? The answer is no (nobles don't work). So don't use them to model nobles in a fantasy world- without the legwork it takes to get the audience on board. Speaking that way is also a heuristic for low socio-economic status and low education in our world and that factors into how we understand it. But again, it just comes off as bad writing. Anyone of your characters can act anyway you want them to act if you put in the work to make it make sense to people who aren't you.

If you're going to be unreceptive to criticism, then don't ask for it. I'm not trying to tear you down for the sake of tearing you down. I offer criticism to help you. This is how you get better at writing, not by getting hurt when people have different ideas about how you can improve your writing. You have to move beyond being defensive or you will stagnate.

Halfway through Claw Of The Concilliator (prison/dungeon part). Should the dreams from book 1 reveal themselves by now? Did they even have a foreshadowing purpose? I read it a few months ago and forgot most of it I guess. I didn't care enough to take special care of it, because I honestly don't feel as strongly about foreshadowings as I used to.

I can remove the entire scene where the different groups meet and replace it with a sentence or two and it will read better for me. Why? because the language barrier does not pose a problem for your characters worth elaborating on further. Textual evidence: they don't spend days of travel finding an interpreter. Textual evidence: they don't suffer setbacks - and do everything as if there was no language barrier whatsoever. So why do you spend so much effort trying to convince us there's a problem- this creates an expectation for a resolution that you do not meet with the story you have told. Compare it to other bigger problems which only got a line or two- the roads being ruined by rain, the harsh travel conditions. You've started this story by giving a cursory summation to bigger problems why wouldn't the nothingburger language barrier also deserve a cursory mention?

I don't want anything. Either the entire scene needs to be presented as the nothingburger it is currently and condensed to a sentence or two, or the resolution has to meet the expectations set by the build up of the problem. It doesn't matter which you choose. Make sure the expectation and payoff are in line. If you make a promise to the audience that the language barrier is a problem- you have to deliver the problem in a way that meets our expectations. As I mentioned earlier- having to trek another few days to find an interpreter would be one fitting pay out- which could result in other conflicts. Not being able to communicate at all and leaving in a defeated and baffled state- resulting in a very big bad thing happening would be another payout appropriate for the built up expectations you've set.

This is something you as a writer have to pay attention to when you introduce conflict. What expectations are you setting - what promises are you making and do you make good on those promises.

Anyways, I couldn't get further than when they found the 'wrong fish'. There seems to be a lot of descriptions just read to us by the narrator, maybe it'd be better to cover this in dialogue between the two knights or whatever.

I find it so amazingly easy to glaze my eyes over when I see there is zero dialogue or actually important things being discussed in a book.

Maybe you aren't writing for my type of reader. Other than the fact I couldn't force myself to read any further than that (I wouldn't take this as an insult to the work necessarily.) it was 'fine', I didn't give it enough thought to actually critique the content further than I have.

Saying "why even bring up the language barrier of it's resolved two lines later?" is valid, but you seem to put too much stock in it.

When things work the rules don't matter. But when things don't work, it's best to reexamine the rules that were broken. They aren't immutable nor do I treat them as such- but they are good guidelines in general because they tend to work.

I'm the writer.
My intent for the chapter is a horror feel. The language barrier forcing the Ketch to vaguely refer to what's going on as "evil" without being able to go into specifics. I didn't intend for it to be a major conflict in the chapter, just a device to lend to the mystery.
I am a new writer and horror is hard to pull off, so if you think there is a better way to contribute to the mystery than a language barrier, I'm open to pointers. But I'm with the other anon, I don't see how the language barrier aspect breaks any essential narrative conventions.
I'm open to constructive criticism, but I have no obligation to respond to it with "Yes sir, you're absolutely right sir, I'll change it immediately." I'm allowed to make a case for my choices.

I don't understand the current obsession webnovels have with systems and video game mechanics. Even as someone who enjoys the sort of games these things tend to be based on, I just don't get it at all. If I'm reading something and something akin to a status window pops up in front of a character at any point I instantly stop reading.

I’ve read / watched stories where things will happen and there’s no clearly explained reason as to how they happened. Every single thing that happens is foreshadowed to the point where when the thing actually happens, all you think is "well, finally".

Finished the first part of Murtagh, it's decent so far. Paolini's writing has greatly improved over the years, and I like how the reader gets to see the actions Eragon and Arya took in a different perspective. He explores a lot of the underpinnings of the world in it rather than just handwaving everything like the Inheritance Cycle did.

There are dozens of classic fantasy novels you've likely not read. It boggles the mind why people, even anons ITT would read YAslop such as Paolini. If you absolutely MUST read YA, at least read McKillip or Le Guin.

Yeah I've found this with the 'slice of life' branding too (which is a niche I enjoy if its done well, so its not like its an inherent weakness to the genre).
There's so many progression stories where they describe literally every single day of the protagonists life when there's no need to. Usually fucks up the sense of scale too because getting a fair bit stronger after 1500 pages is reasonable but that's often only like 3 months into the story because they paced it so slow.

Book sales aren't even real

I finished 'a mote in god's eye' by Larry Niven and Jerry pournelli.

I had previously read only Ringworld by Larry Niven and gave it a 3/5. I'll go ahead and say I give this book a 4/5 and I will put the rest of the series tentatively on my list to be read
(pending further opinions on the series.)

Characters:
During the early parts of the novel there is a lottt of characters, it's not too bad but often it was hard to keep track, the point of view changes often as well. They are all reasonably fleshed out and most are likable. I'd say they are pretty good.

Story:
I enjoyed that they didn't linger on anything too long, and that they actually explored a first contact with aliens. Often times first contacts are skipped or the aliens are super advanced or very dumb. In this story the aliens are super advanced but they have an achieles heel in one area of technology that basically puts the two species on even ground. Pretty cool.

Spoiler review:
I really liked the motes and their background and 'cycles' is a cool concept and it revealed itself pretty well over time, it never felt forced that the humans not understand it yet or forced onto the reader to understand. I also think the caste system they operate under is cool. Anyways, I don't have many spoilers really.

So yeah, I have a better opinion of Larry Niven now but I'm unsure if it's Jerry's help that made me feel that way.

So any thoughts on the rest of the Mote series?

Not an especially sound definition, but what 99% of people looking for "conservative fantasy" are probably looking for.

Somewhat more robust, though obviously what exactly qualifies will vary from person to person the same way people disagree on what genuine "progressive fantasy" is.

Both categories could obviously contain stuff that was progressive at time of publication, given how the lines have shifted.

The sequel is really good, but skip the 3rd book. The earlier Pournelle CoDominium books are next on my list, I'll report back. Larry Niven's short stories are generally better than his novels, but Protector and World of Ptavs are solid
