Same here, I think I'm legitimately too stupid to understand more highbrow things, so I just read for enjoyments sake, fiction mostly with some educational stuff and psychology recently. Feels terrible btw

The idea of "highbrow" literature is 90% a meme, the academic study of literature is designed to signal and gatekeep social status, this is historically true and the social and economic forces which made it this way in the beginning still obtain. The only difference is the list of books which signal status, the list varies with elite values, the only quantity being maximized is social signaling. There is nothing essentially "superior" about 800 page obtuse Irish novels about farting and masturbating, this is just a better expression of 20th century elite values than Aquinas.

Tldr read only what you personally find value in, any anxiety you feel about not reading "great books" is a meme deliberately designed to make you feel excluded. The real value of literature is orthogonal to this.

Philosophy and classical literature mostly and some manga (nothing very hard or specific, I'm still in the testing-ground phase lol). But it's never satisfying, like I'm always missing something so questions just keep popping up ceaselessly. Maybe I have learned some things after all but I can't be sure of them. To a degree, anyway. There's no point in forcing yourself to read something you hate in your free time, you won't get anything out of it (it's probably crap anyway.)

That said people write books for reasons which are not necessarily social signalling (some of them). There are other things to talk about besides who is a pseud and who got filtered, and sometimes books are written about them.
