So what happened to his highly anticipated third novel that he was comparing to Finnegans Wake? Did he give up? I was really thinking that the third time would be the charm, especially with such an ambitious project.

The real mistake is his trying to write in a a language that is (I presume) not his native one. Most native English speakers can’t write literary masterpieces, or even halfway decent books, so why would an ESL author be able to do it? The list of authors who have written great works in their non-native language is pretty short, as in maybe five authors over a couple thousand years. The probability that you’re one of these people, or that Walden is one, is incredibly low.

Probably what makes Walden easy to hate is his seeming presumptuousness (cultivating a personal image that doesn’t match his ability level) with the fact that he probably doesn’t have anything insightful to say. Midwits are annoying even when they have a decent grasp of the language; they’re even more annoying when they’re using a non-native language they haven’t mastered.

For some reason, people give ESLs a pass with regard to their writing, and in some ways encourage the delusion that they can write masterpieces. This is kind of an insane idea though. For instance, if you decided right now that you were not only going to learn Chinese but also become a master novelist in Chinese, nobody would seriously entertain the idea that you would accomplish this. But for some reason when it’s non-white people learning English we’re supposed to entertain this idea and encourage it.

The simple answer is that it's a LARP. It's a young man who has placed himself in the position of a successful and learned person before he has any right to do so. You cannot just appear to be something and expect ipso facto that you are that thing.

He seems like his intentions about promoting an enjoyment of literature and learning in general are genuine though, so he's alright in that sense. I respect people who do that.

Yeah that’s why I said there’s been a handful of people who have pulled it off. You listed the two obvious ones. The only others I can think of who successfully wrote in a language not native to them would be Thomas More (Utopia was written in Latin, with his native language being English) and Marcus Aurelius (Meditations was written in Greek, with his native language being Latin). There might be a couple other examples but it’s extremely rare. I mean specifically masterpiece works and not random, mediocre works.

From the critical response I've seen it seems to be that this isn't the case and the 2nd book was worse and had even less effort put into it. I can let a dogshit story slide for a new writer but if you're on your 2nd book having a dystopian thriller about a regime called 'The Regime' and filling it with grammatical errors, all while posing as a highly intellectual bookworm then something is wrong.
I also have a soft spot for new writers giving it a go but the pretentious social media presence doesn't give you much opportunity to make mistakes.

His second book was technically an improvement, but it lost the soul of TLD. Both are <3/10, but TLD at least had that Sonichu quality of being obliviously awful, which made it fun to read and discuss. L'Academie is nothing; just a F451 ripoff created solely as a course-correction for his career. It's like if you make fun of a kid for dressing in neon Naruto clothes and the next day he shows up in all black.
Honestly, this guy is a great example of why good writers can't be born from social media. Only maybe 1% of the reactions Waldun got to his work were nuanced and constructive. Everything else was either unquestioning love from his fanbase, which encouraged his bad habits, or virulent hatred from here, which led him to take down his books and perpetually try to reinvent himself as a good writer (because he wants to be one of "the greats," who in his mind were great from the start.)

Nothing nuanced about the shiteness of Waldun's books. I'll admit the criticism could've been more constructive from /lit/. But can you blame us when Waldun promised L'Académie would be a massive improvement? This is what happens in the self-publishing world. If the only person that vets your writing is yourself, you only have yourself to blame when the projet fails critically and commercially.

Try searching up Waldun on the warosu archive. You want to start with the threads that beging in October of 2020. October of 2020 was the first time Waldun was posted to /lit/. He was originally posted because he made a "Dark Academia" video. He got roasted in that thread, but at that point no one knew about the novel he wrote. Then of course we found the novel, the polymath and Renaissance Man videos. kdbooks reviewed TLD, and Waldun had recently announce his second novel L'Académie. It took off from there. A straight year of Waldun posting hyping up the release of L'Académie. Waldun would make videos giving hints on the progress and how it was so much better and real literature this time. Then Waldun revealed some info about his "editor". Needless to say /lit/ surmised the editor was just selling Waldun a dream and milking him for money. Waldun spent a fortune on that editor for over a year, and all he got in return was L'Académie. Waldun released the editor has failed him and then released L'Académie hoping for the best. kdbooks roasted him again and demanded Waldun refund all purchasers because he was selling unedited, unpublishable shite, and abusing his audience for cash. That's when Waldun's career ended and he decided he would be an academic instead of a writer.

Rand, Kerouac, Cioran, and a bunch of nobodies. Only Beckett and Augustine stand out there. If writing in a non-native language is such a wonderful idea, why do authors who speak English well, such as Murakami and Knausgard, still write in their native languages and not English? (Murakami, despite having translated English works into Japanese, does not write his books in English, and typically has other people translate his books for him.) English is such a complex language that even native speakers get the grammar wrong all the time and are ignorant of many English words. Excuse me for not thinking that some ESL retard from YouTube is going to write anything worthwhile in English. Not even the native English speakers in Australia themselves are capable of writing anything worthwhile, much less some pampered rich immigrant kid who doesn’t know the language.

Aesthetic don't really mean anything, especially when it's all a 1920s larp. Gen-Z doesn't have its own fashion sense, simply rebrands past fashion trends such as Y2K and dark academia. The people who dressed as Tumblr girls and weebs 10 years ago are now dressing like this. In another 10 years they'll be wearing the next qurky, neurodivergent trend. Therefore their aesthetic is just that, a vapid aesthetic to present themselves as their new hyperfixation rather than their actual personality. Say what you will about Hunter S. Thompson as a writer, but at least he had an individual sense of style which complimented his over the top personality. Writers now simply become obsessed with Camus and Dostoevsky in order to wear overcoats and smoke cigarettes, the same way posers who wear Thraser t-shirts start listening to skater music, so as not to be called a poser.

He just repeats platitudes and things he has heard others say using a quality camera/microphone setup and decent editing. Everything he says is contrived and derivative--he offers no real insight into the subjects he covers and regurgitates simplistic truisms that cover over the fact he has no real experience/knowledge to offer (e.g. "long books are intimidating...try breaking up your reading sessions to make it easier to get through them"). All style and no substance which is why /lit/ shits on him (note that he isn't talented as a writer so he can't even pull off style over substance and his books end up being unintentionally hilarious in their cringe).

This excerpt (pic) is a brilliant example of the complexity of Waldun--as a writer AND a figure of the Melbourne Movement. Notice the deep symbolism Waldun is using to code his repressed homosexuality?

A woman at a cafe--the archetypal object of desire causes our man to become self-aware. But what is he aware of? That he should desire but doesn't desire--she moves him from a light drink to a heavy drink. A call to adventure that the feminine has forced upon him. Notice the resonance of moving from tea to coffee as the symbolic object? The coded phallic language of "long black?" What does he really want and what has he accepted? The object of desire's friendship, full stop because that is all.

The sweet repression of emotion Waldun gives us via a delicate use of irony, the archetypical structuring at an inverse, is masterful. Fade into Jay.

The real object of desire is Jay (The Author). On the level of authorial biographical analysis--scholars a century from now will be talking of the tension represented in the line openly criticizing the friend and confidant. Using shade to shade in character--delightfully playful is our man Waldun (or 'Robin' as he is known to his Jay).

Jay is freedom; he cannot be constrained by formatting. We all know, deep down, that Robin will never convince Jay to share a cage. However, the Jay is teaching the Robin to soar--all gas, no breaks.

Nothing wrong with publishing sophomoric stuff or even constructing his whole aesthetic like he did. Honestly I think if we had more young people doing so it would be a lot of fun. What's bad is he gave up the writing instead of pushing through the embarrassment and realizing that those poking fun have a genuine point. Plenty of fantastic writers started off as cheap imitations, pretentious whatevers, but he's refusing to learn from any of it it seems. He wants to be a writer more than he actually wants to write, putting the cart before the horse.

Yeah maybe in 2019. Waldork is 22 or 23 now. He honestly should've known better about L'Académie after all the shit he got for The Learned Disguise. Waldork has only himself to blame because he's a clout chaser. He wanted the approval of the masses so he was desperate to show everyone how intelligent he is. Waldork's only problem is he's not even a mildly talented writer. If Waldork was so talented, why was he forced to self-publish? Waldork's hubris was his own undoing. He's kind of a tragic hero. Someone should write a tragedy in verse about Waldork's literary ventures.

I graduated high school in 2014. The only time we were allowed on a computer in English class was when we went to the computer lab specifically to work on writing an essay or do research for an essay. Otherwise we were, prepping for the reading of a work, reading the work, or discussing/analyzing the work. It seems to me school is glorified babysitting if you don't go to an all-white school. Have you dweebs tried being white? It might improve your relation with education.

I went to a virtually all-white Catholic school which was one of the top performing schools in the UK. We wouldn't have gotten away with brazenly banging flappy bird mid-lesson or whatever it was Waldun was supposedly doing, but it was still glorified babysitting. The books we covered for A-level English were The Road and The Handmaid's Tale, you had to be a genuine spastic not to achieve top marks in the exams (unless you made some sort of concerted effort not to so much as glance at the books or imbibe anything that was being read aloud in class). Grade inflation has reached insane levels since covid, iirc something like 50% of students were obtaining As. I know of people that were being awarded As who themselves would have struggled to even pass their exams had they sat them in 2015.

And over here, it's the white protestant underclass who straddle the nadir of educational attainment. The only other groups vying with them for their abysmal spot are Caribbeans, pikeys and roma gypsies. Pretty much all other wogs comfortably surpass them, and that even tends to include Africans from the likes of Ghana. While the Isles themselves are generally dysgenic, the white protestant underclass is fucking morbid.

It'll take more than malnourishment and entrenched deprivation to snuff out the patterspheric frequencies still reverberating through the likes of Belfast and Glasgow, but there is something uniquely 'bovine' about the English underclass. I am quite fond of the English in certain respects, however I can't help but notice how grotesque and vacant their underclass is. The underclass of Belfast/Glasgow are at least willing to assist in paring back their dole-induced surplus with violence and drug deaths, and they still have a piercing, energetic aspect to them. The English underclass opted instead to embody the flatulent negativity of their welfare-parasitism in the hope that they would rouse the wider group into getting their act together and putting them out of their misery. That cognitively impaired obese baldy bastard isn't just your SOVLFULLY endearing 'bazza' lurking about the pub giving vent to his dyspeptic musings. He's also an inert signpost made out of gouty, veg-oil saturated flesh redirecting you to a time when high child mortality rates meant that the underclass were perpetually perishing and being replaced by their demoted social superiors. A time when society actually enjoyed an organic and quite literal trickle-down effect and wasn't saddled with a pullulating mass of untouchables like the geezer you see in front of you whose existence you facilitate with your taxes. But aye there's a cost of living crisis because fat cunts like him can't blast their central heating 24/7...Russia's fault I suppose.

The problem is that he looks like he’s 20 but has already published two novels. As an artist it’s way more helpful to start with creating smaller scale works and gradually building up to more significant things. There’s nothing wrong with writing a novel when you’re 20 to develop your skills, but your time could probably be better used elsewhere and for Christ’s sake don’t publish it. Joyce was in his 30s when he finished his first published novel. Wagner, one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, composed a symphony when he was 21 and at best it’s remembered as a competent Beethoven pastiche.

>>22774105
His enunciation and pronunciation are not that of a native speaker with no experience in a second language. He obviously doesn't live in a non-English speaking country and he's been at this YT thing for a while, so the only real explanation is that he grew up speaking something else in the home. It's fairly obvious when you grow up around Chinese/Cantonese speakers who experience the same upbringing. As communicative English it's no doubt more than adequate, but native he is not. Not that being ESL is a problem, but reading through his book seals the deal because his prose and flow do not follow the logical thought patterns of someone who grew up exclusively in an English-speaking environment and culture.

>>22774642
It's quite awful. I don't want to say that he shouldn't keep trying, but he might do well to adopt more humility and maybe take some classes to learn about logical flow. He knows a lot of words, no doubt, but he doesn't seem to know how to product logical synergy between the words he uses. It's almost as if he writes sentences based on words he wants to see in his writing as opposed to writing to describe a story being acted out in his mind.

>>22774178
I would be incredibly surprised if this guy was even able to get through the first ten pages of Ulysses. If he hasn't read through it, it's definitely not because it didn't "capture his attention," but rather because it was to difficult for him to get through owing to a lack of knowledge of the historical background and context. I haven't seen many of his videos, but he strikes me as the type to vocally profess their "love for the classics" while not actually having read through them.

You're right. That sentence is also a good example of how we know he is not a native speaker of English. You are generally "haunted" by something with a connection to the past. And if you are indeed "haunted" by something, it is obviously redundant to say that your "soul" is haunted. If we are talking about a "potential rejection," more appropriate wording for the feelings he wants to convey would be something along the lines of "it wasn't the potential for rejection which haunted me." As you have said, the second part is redundant.
