Tigana - Guy Gavriel Kay (1990)

Eighteen years ago Tigana was more than conquered. Its name was wiped from the memories of everyone who lived in the nine provinces of the Palm, except those who lived in Tigana. Its surviving citizens would have to live with everything they knew having been renamed. Anyone who heard them utter "Tigana" would hear but not understand. Nineteen year Devin, a musician in a traveling troupe, was born in Tigana but never knew his homeland. His fate takes a drastic turn when he stumbles upon a group of rebels seeking to restore Tigana. Catriana was a teenager when Tigana was erased and she swore to take vengeance upon Brandin, their conqueror. However, after so many years as part of his harem she's no longer who she once was.

As stated by the author in the afterword, The Palm is a stand-in for the city states of Italy during the Italian Renaissance. Two sorcerers, Brandin and Alberico, one representing Spain and the other France, have each conquered half of the Palm. Their magic does whatever they feel like it doing. They just think and it happens, whatever it may be, though the greater the magic, the more they expend themselves. Both are caricatures. Alberico is an insecure and paranoid psychopath while Brandin is a melodramatic obsessive who gave up his kingship, family, and humanity to pursue a grudge against Tigana. Opposing them is group of rebels that includes Devin who go from place to place setting up plans for the entire book except for the climax, which mostly happens for plot convenience. Catriana, the other main viewpoint, is basically a case study of stockholm syndrome. There are other viewpoints that serve to explain characters as well.

Tigana is made of metaphors and allegories. The integral one, Tigana, is about identity and self-worth. It gave me a nice sense of saudade, despite how overwrought it was about it. If that's all there was, I'd be happy with it. Unfortunately that's only where it begins. The sex scenes, which are ridiculous, are all allegorical as well. I know this because both the text and author say they are. The problem I have with that is that the allegories are elevated above everything else, which for me is to the story's detriment. Apparently all of GGK's novels take place in the same universe, but references are only that and nothing more meaningful.

This is the most disappointing novel I've read this year, whereas disappointment is measured by the distance between expectations and reality. I was expecting a serious historical fantasy and instead I got half melodrama and half tragedy. I can somewhat understand why it received so many rewards and praise in it has probably has great appeal for those who appreciate its prose and allegories at the expense of everything else. That seems to make this a rather polarizing book. It's still possible I may try reading something else from GGK eventually. It'll be a long time though, if ever.

Finished the first part of Murtagh, it's decent so far. Paolini's writing has greatly improved over the years, and I like how the reader gets to see the actions Eragon and Arya took in a different perspective. He explores a lot of the underpinnings of the world in it rather than just handwaving everything like the Inheritance Cycle did.

Just downloaded an epub reader and configured its pages and font to my liking. It isn't edgy, it's just the truth. Ever see what people who only read genre-fiction say about "literary fiction"? They say it's pretentious, trying too hard to seem smart, all full of purple prose, and boring. I'm entirely comfortable reading both genre fiction and conventional literature. The truth is somewhat different; most genre fiction readers never come into contact with any of the good genre fiction OR any of the good literature. Sauron is arguably one of the least blameworthy actors in the sagas. Sure he wages some war, runs some game, tricks some useful idiots but nothing Sauron does falls outside the normal rules of war or statecraft - and it's not like either the humans or the elves ever demonstrate the capacity for self-rule in any kind of reasonable way. The elves kick off their time in the universe by starting a literally eternal civil war and the humans don't do much better. It's not hard to make a case that suborning the idiots to a centralized power is the reasonable course; this is just Thomas Hobbes 101 and Sauron happens to be good with force and fraud. Is he a good guy? No. I'd argue that he is the protagonist though.

Portal fantasy in the hands of an Andre Norton or a Poul Anderson was about men held back by modernity, they were either heroes or had a savage nature that meant they were unable to fully express themselves in polite society. Dune is a nothingburger wherein nothing happens. There's a couple of knife fights, a bit of exposition, and a lot of filler that gets thrown out or ignored for the rest of the series.

It's not. Dune's only claim to fame has always just been world-building. Someone lied to you or your expectations were out of line. 2.5/5 is about right.

As many people will tell you, Messiah is the high water mark. Children of Dune and God Emperor are not quite up to snuff but Leto II is worth chasing down. Heretics and Chapterhouse - Herbert has an aneurism or something and the last two books go full Bene Geseriboo.

I'm reading Embassytown by Mieville now and I think it's great. I'm still a bit unsure on how to understand how the alien race uses language ; it's the case that they literally cannot tell lies, they can only speak Truths, and so they incorporate humans into their language to come up with similes, in order to skirt around their language hinderances. The ideas are interesting, the world building is neat, and the main character is tolerable. Mieville wrote the book a bit non linearly (some chapters are in the past, some in the present) and that type of writing is definitely a page turner for me as I want to figure out just what the hell is going on. Mel is a slave girl from Asshai who was sold to the red temple. I doubt she is a secret Targaryen, we have enough of those already. Honestly the finales of all of the books are pretty good. The second one is the only one that I feel had the proper buildup/pacing to match that ending though. Oathbreaker was way too long and Rhythm of War was kinda all over the place. I actually liked Rhythm of War's last part the most. Some of the best 300ish pages I've ever read.

I think the appeal of the first Dune for the average normie is the imagining of what that empire Paul would create would be in all its nebulous grandeur. Or rather just soaking in atmosphere and filling in the blanks of that distant universe with headcanon cope. People like the idea of Dune more than the book itself. Hence why they might get bored with subsequent books. Not worth it after God Emperor of Dune. It's fine for a couple of books but your millage may vary as it demystifies a lot of the future of the first book. Some parts honestly make the world seem smaller.
