based or cringe?

Based. Good texts, with introduction and notes, and cheap. This shit would be very expensive in my country

Their new cover design sucks. They also seem to have downgraded the paper quality.

Personally I prefer Oxford World Classics, but Penguin is great for being broadly availible and (normally) cheaper in comparison

"Classics" is a huge joke.

Imagine letting other people and "the general consensus" decide what's worth reading and not reading as broadly as you can to make up your own mind.

Being historically important =/= Being a good book still

Most classics are shit.

NTA but I can spot 5 shit penguin classics from where I'm sitting in my lounge:
Lady Chatterley's Lover
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
The Great Gatsby
War and Peace
Agnes Grey

Oxford -
>blown out intros written by onions grad students
>extremely frequent print errors, mis-cut pages, etc
>cheap quality paper which makes their books age like ham in the sun
Yeah the bird beats them in every manner. Just go into any used bookstore. The black penguins hold up fairly well whereas any Oxford older than 5 years looks like it will disintegrate in the wind

I have some Oxford World Classics because I wanted some specific translations, but the construction quality is shit. The ink always smears under my fingers. And the margins are small so it's difficult to hold without fingers touching the ink, which means smearing is inevitable.

Most of the books my parents had that I read growing up were old Penguin Classics paperbacks, and that's usually what I buy. They're cheap, you can carry them around, and they seem basically durable. I guess if you're some kind of hardcore book collector it might not be what you want, but for the average person who just wants to read the text I think the Penguin editions are pretty decent.

>>22644492
>>22644352
To be fair, I have noticed this. I still have a bunch of my parents' old paperbacks and the quality of the older ones seems much higher.

>>22644436
kek. Now I can't unsee it.

War and Peace was historically important, I'll grant it that, but there is no reason to read that book for pleasure in 2023
