What are some essential classics that a moderately fast reader can read within a day or two? What are some of your favorites?

don't know about essential, but a lot of iconic classic horror stories are very short. Like Frankenstein, Turn of the Screw, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Invisible Man, Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Grey etc.
Other than that, can't go wrong with Tolstoy, Dostoevsky or Kafka short stories either.

>Essential classics
>Can read fast

You need to break out of the novel mindset.

Read poetry.
Read drama.
Read short stories.
Read essays.

Here's one example of each:

— Crow by Ted Hughes
— Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Beckett
— Cathedral by Raymond Carver
— In Defence Of Penny Dreadfuls by G. K. Chesterton

All classics, and the whole lot together take less time than the Preface to Portrait of a Lady.

Don't know if you meant short stories, but I found "Helping" by Robert Stone to be really profound for reasons I can't articulate.
