I know enough to see where Leo Strauss was sourcing all of his parts without understanding the main thrust behind his critique of modernity. I was wondering if anybody else seemed to recognize Strauss’s inability to contend with the problem of the metaphysics of presence or his reticence on metaphysical matters.

Strauss took Heidegger's classes and saw that it was logically inevitable to be a fascist, so he had to devote the rest of his life to pilpuling a special funhouse mirror version of fascism in which only Jews are allowed to be fascist and everybody else has to be "open." Jews twist themselves into pretzels to justify continuing to LARP as the main characters of European societies in their heads, instead of just going somewhere and staying there. Kevin MacDonald only got it half right, Jews are indeed the product of evopsych natural selection moulding them to the role they play in their host countries, but that role is only secondarily financial and cultural parasitism. Secular Jews can't even fathom just sitting in a room quietly and reading the Torah. They have to picture at least one goy outside the window scowling in envy (for some reason) and plotting against them. Their entire existence is "being-for-goyim."

When it comes to Strauss-Heidegger judo, the only place where Strauss mogs Heidegger is with his attack on the relativity of historicism. It's difficult for Heidegger to complain about an "enfeebling of spirit" and the rise of mediocrity if he has no standard to judge with. It has to be said that Strauss makes a solid point here. But where does that standard come from? God? Classical natural right? The forms? Eudaimonia? All of that is ontotheology, which Heidegger eviscerates into shreds without even a second thought.

So we have this strange impasse between the two thinkers. Heidegger is easily the more philosophically imposing. But Strauss does have a point, stemming from the question of why do we even bother with philosophy at all. Is there ultimately meaning to be found in the whole? The two thinkers have managed to "coup" each other.

I still think he had a valid point, the one I mentioned, and I appreciate his commentary and influence (outside of politics). It's just kind of sad that there's not much *there* except a faint hint of something better beyond the vague doomerism and the hypocrisy regarding Israel.

you have to read a bunch of long winded uchicago transcripts which are heavily obfuscated and only implied at but he actually did support hitler (which is insane considering his status)

Strauss was right that Heidegger failed to do what he said needed to be done. Strauss at least recognizes that you simply inherit a culture and philosophical tradition as a matter of fact, and there’s absolutely no way of getting beyond that. You just have to get over it’s problems, which we won’t do.
