Just getting into Dune and I know I have a shit ton of books to read.
so I'm wondering, is there any other series of sci-fi books with this deep of a philosophical edge to it and as intricate in it's storyline?

Late 2001 Space Odyssey novels with precursor civilizations could comfortably coexist with Dune history. Olaf Stapleton's Star Marker (an influence on the former) as well. Like for like Gene Wolf's Book of the New Sun probably. Might enjoy Hyperion or Wheel of Time as well.

There was so much dead space in this. I put up with the lewis in clark's diary portion (the priest's story) which admittedly finally came to an amazing conclusion after a load of boring bullshit. Then we moved on to some fucking black hawk down military drama shit in the next story and I just gave up as I came to this novel thinking I was gonna get deep ideas rather than austistic nerd shit about commandos. Does it get better / more dense?

Far from it.
LOTR = Fantasy Middle Earth
Dune = Space Opera Sci-Fi Action Philosophy

Insofar as trying to create a new basis of myth for a nation in a way yes. Though for Tolkein that was an explicit aim whereas Herbert I assume was just exploring psychedelics and eastern religions himself and put it in his book because that was his interest rather than explicitly trying to create a new mythos. But the hippies failed so ultimately no Dune doesn't play that role. Also there's no way Dune was as influential to subsequent writers as lotr.
