There's a couple of themes in the book, like how people only care about you if you can give them value, how people waste their lives working for the happiness of others instead of their own. IMO it's just a metaphor of how people won't support you when you're suffering, that ultimately only you can help yourself. Rethink the whole story but instead of Gregor being a bug, think of him as some depressed neet who kills himself at the end.

I had a family member like that. Yes, everyone wanted him to die. I remember that I learned at a young age, thanks to that sick person, that people who affirm life are never strong. He clung to life even though it was a tremendous burden to his family and he could have died painlessly once, but he still wanted to survive.

It’s a great comedy about the absurdity and cruelty of life, love, and family.
You can give them everything. Sacrifice your dreams, potential, and even sanity, but they won’t actually appreciate it. In fact, the whole joke is that they would’ve been okay without him THE WHOLE TIME. He didn’t NEED to stay with them, they never needed him. It was his own fears and self interest that drove him into his delusion.
He turned into a roach because he was behaving like one.
His body finally matched his soul.
A cowardly, wretched, useless roach who refused to do anything.
Of course, his family did the right thing and smashed him to bits.
