The map is "wrong" in the sense that it's from the flawed perspective of in universe maesters. The real map bends northwards in the east. The bay with the island would roughly be around the wall, the Grey Waste is in the far north.

This is what explains the Azor Ahai mythology, long dark and the five forts. Both continents are connected to the same north pole where the others come from. They both fought the same war against them thus the shared mythology. The five forts are the eastern version of the wall. One built with fire, the other with ice.

I know this because I am literally George R. R. Martin. No, I will not finish the books.
