Some of you guys sound really smart when you talk about philosophy and art. How can I get to that level? What should I read specifically? (99% of posters are clearly retarded though)

It’s easy to sound smart when you’re quoting someone else’s work. Regurgitation is a skill for parrots.
Try absorbing and interpreting a philosophers words and apply it to your own values.

Philosophy phd student here (defending my dissertation next semester) and the level of philosophical discourse here is abysmal. Take intro to philosophy, skim the readings, and you'll be leagues above half the jokers on this board. Hell, skim the plato.stanford, edu entry for whatever you're interested in and you'll look like a professor compared to most here.

There's the occasional German Idealism discussion, which I admittedly have no knowledge in (other than reading the first Critique a few years ago for a seminar on it), that seem high level. So, there are some smart folks here. But it's very rare.

I dont read an extreme amount but I am able to hold my own in philosophy and art discussions because of immense osmosis. The real secret is to accept that you don't know everything and never will. Other than that it's important to form your own opinions and theories on things rasther than to just parrot what someone else says and then put your ideas/theories into a crucible. Another thing is not to simply disregard someones entire worldview because of one thing they do which you may not agree with. In your case I would say also not to just be impressed by someone "sounding" intelligent because a lot of people on here like to parrot someones opinion/theory but when pressed on it just seem tone deaf so dont have the showl be pulled over your eyes by snake charmers

Would it be possible to get some kind of collective going where we all try to excel at our specific interests and talents and somehow the others can benefit? Could we start a 4chan university where all the teachers are just that one really schizo guy who spends 18 hours a day reading about chemistry?

Sounds like you might like Greek poetics and criticism, so maybe start with the Iliad, then some Sappho, Aeschylus’ Oresteia, Sophocles’ Philoctetes and Antigone, Euripides’ Helen and Phoenician Women, Plato’s Symposium and last book of Republic, Aristophanes’ Clouds and Frogs, Aristotle’s Poetics, Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy (and the scathing foreword), whatever Hegel says about the Antigone in the Phenomenology, and finally The Greeks and the Irrational by Dodds

If you're comparing yourself to "half the jokers on this board" you're in some dire straits. Compare yourself instead to the most eloquent and intelligent posters here. Otherwise it's like doing a BA degree and feeling comfortable that you're more knowledgeable than 98% of your classmates (none of whom read, ever).

they read so much that when they regurgitate information it draws from such a large base with so many relevant points to connect that it comes out smart. Being truly intelligent relies on your capacity to retain and connect said ideas. Also to formulate your own new ideas based on what you know or what you don't. Someone smart can do more with less. You don't need to binge books, it will just turn you into a pseud. Read what interests you and take advantage of your own natural intelligence. That said if you're a retard it may well be best to take the pseud route. Plenty of people get by fine regurgitating information
