It’s not. Most “communists” use “communism” as a sort of way of saying “I’m kind of dissident and support workers”. They are also staunchly pro-union. They don’t even know that Lenin had quite a lot of disparaging things to say about unions. Even as a philosophy, Marxism is used basically as a method, a way of writing about oppressed women, oppressed minorities, oppressed transsexuals as if they were the 19th century working class. Marxism is arguably not dead but that’s because it lives as a method. Communism as a political ideology is 100% dead and buried and was never at any point even popular in the West at all.

In my opinion, Marx’s Capital and various writings of Lenin are the only really interesting pieces of Communist literature left. Also, an essential part of being a Communist is arguing about who is and who isn’t a real Communist because see Marxism is just as dogmatic as medieval theology and the point is to either become Martin Luther (Lenin) or else to root out heretics but under no circumstances should you allow the working class to seize power.
