What really long book series have you read every single book of? (not counting rare or hard to find stories or out-of-print stuff. Off the top of my head my list includes:
>Culture (including State of the Art)
>Thomas Covenant (and Gildenfire) + Gap Cycle
>ASOIAF
>Pliocene Epoch/Galactic Melliue
>Book of Words/Sword of Shadows (book 5 wen?)
>Redwall (Excluding those weird pop-up books)
>The Dark Tower (not the comics tho)
>Dune (yes the shitty sequels his son and Anderson wrote too)
>Remnants/Everworld/Endling (working on Animorphs rn)
>His Dark Materials
>PJ Farmer's The Dungeon
>The original Sword of Truth books
>The Gandalara Cycle
A few more I can't think of right now, I'd have to check my goodreads
I'd be interested to know what book series other anons have read and enjoyed. These threads have gotten so stale and I'm dying to talk about good sci-fi

I want to read a lighthearted adventure with memorable characters that immerse you in the world. Preferably fantasy but sci-fi is fine too. My favourite series is Fables, just so you get what I mean by immersive and lighthearted.

No I won't use your mega link I've looked at it and it is unhelpful. Literally provides zero information about the books listed. No synopsis means you have to judge the books by their covers or google every individual title. What do you take me for, a retard?

Semi-related note:

I’ve come to the realization recently that this fat lazy fuck is shamelessly derivative. I read ASOIAF years ago, thought it was good, liked the first couple seasons of the show, then dropped it when the show split from the books.
A couple months ago I picked up Tad Williams’ memory, sorrow, and thorn series. A blurb on the cover from the first in the series in from GRRM saying it “inspired him to write his own fantasy series”. I’m on the last book in the series now and have come to the conclusion that GRRM just took Williams books and added penises and swear words.
Seriously I’m not sure how he hasn’t caught major public shit over this. Some of Tad Williams characters can be exhausting, but I think he’s a way better writer and his ideas definitely came first. Any one of his series would make a better HBO show than ASOIAF, especially Otherland. God damn I hate this fat fuck.

I would say malazan straddles the line desu, it doesnt have sanderson teir rules but its no way as abstract as gandalf wizards or asoiaf whose power seems to accomplish whatever the author wants, since there is no real magic user vs magic user battles, i suppose thats why they dont flesh it out

i get why sanderson does all his rules, he wants the powers to be spread around characters in the book so the characters can use them, but if everyone just had magic like gandalf where they just do whatever and nothing was explained with resource cost/practicality it would just be a mess

i actually dont think malazan fits in the top, yes there's the ascendants who magic comes from who seemingly can do anything, but for the rest of the characters there are clear power levels and as to what they can do, its usually up to their own imagination, which warrens they can wield and the toll it takes on their body

asoiaf is his latest work, try some of his older books in the 1000 worlds settings, the lonely songs of larren dorr, and seven times never kill man, windhaven, dying of the light, a song for lya, sandkings, house of the white worm... asoiaf is his last series and most popular, but there is still a sizeable chunk of readers who are waiting for him to write Avalon, which was supposed to be the most definitive work in the 1000 worlds

heres the wiki definiton:

These stories take place in a universe where Earth has settled numerous planets, thus forming the Federal Empire. As they expanded, however, humanity entered into wars with two rival alien species, the Hrangans and the Fyndii. This Double War ended up destroying the empire and plunging the galaxy into chaos. The title "Thousand Worlds" is a reference to the leftover worlds and peoples of this intergalactic melee. Most of the stories are set during the post-Interregnum period, as disparate human cultures gradually regain interstellar flight and re-establish contact with one another.

basically, it is a setting of many planets after a long war that has reduced most of these planets to stone age civilsations, but people still stumble across advanced genetic engineering that was used in the wars against aliens and make use of it in a medieval manner such as in the house of the worm or windhaven, by most indications, asoiaf is also in the 1000 worlds as the dragontaming by the valyrians is said to have been effected by such genetic engineering corps, plus it has mention of bakkalon, the pale child which is a major deity in the 1000 worlds and is heavily focused on in and seven times never kill man

though there are still settings that are in advanced / galactic stages and can be experienced in a song for lya, dying of the light, sandkings, tuf voyaging

Because GRRM is 100% transparent and hyping up Tad Williams whenever he gets the chance. Heck we wouldn't have gotten the MS&T sequels if it weren't for him. Tad fans love GRRM.

I can't put my finger on what it was exactly though

The 10 books to be guessed how I'll rate them and why. I'll probably be reading other books as well, but this gives a general idea what I'll be posting about over the next two months in the thread in terms of what I've read and written about. I might still get a Mecha book or two book read this month yet.

October Books
1. Red Rising
It's very popular and asked about a lot

2. Empire of Silence
This the first book of one of the most read by /sffg/ series that was published in 2022

3. Black Sun Rising
A notable and liked fantasy series with an interesting premise that has a new book after over a decade

4. Promise of Blood
For its setting, being liked, and because it's asked about relatively often.

5. The God of Endings
A vampire novel that I saw in passing that may be interesting and suitable for October

November Books
6. The Dragonbone Chair
A fantasy series that's mentioned often, perhaps more than it ought to be based on the /sffg/ ratings

7. The Curse of Chalion
Another oft-mentioned fantasy series. May as well. I didn't want to give Shards of Honour another try right now

8. Tigana
GGK is an author I want to like, but as with KSR, will that even matter? GGK is mentioned relatively often asking if he ought to be read. His reception on /sffg/ does seem mixed

9. The Throne of the Five Winds
An arbitrary pick that may go with the historical fantasy month

10. A Portrait in Shadow
A whimiscal pick about Artemisia Gentileschi because I'm reading Arte, a manga loosely about the same historical figure.

>I’m so tired, I complained. . . Rest a while longer. We’ll hunt later.

They would be healthy and strong and fat, a challenge to any pack, let along a single wolf. He would need me at his side to hunt those. He would have to come back for them later. Nevertheless, he halted on the top of the ridge. The morning wind riffled his fur and his ears were perked as he looked down to where we knew they must be.
>Good hunting. I’m going now, my brother. He spoke with great determination.

Ironclads - Adrian Tchaikovsky (2017
)
This novella, from start to finish, is about a rescue mission told after the fact. The narrator, Sergeant Ted Regan, even directly addresses that he's telling a story at one point. As far as I could tell he seems to be a reliable narrator, so this being a frame story is more a stylistic choice than anything else. So, Regan and his men have been ordered to rescue a scion of one of the most powerful corporations. Scion is both what he is and also what they call the exosuits they use. That's not what's shown on the cover. They have mechs, but most of the fighting is between infantry, vehicles, scions, and a gunship. The rescue mission takes place in the newest US corporate target, Sweden. Along the way there's various mishaps, duplicity, and shifting allegiances. This isn't only a story about machines though, as there also bioengineered humans with animal characteristics and other augmentations.

Considering the length of this novella there's a lot of background info, world history, and general worldbuilding that's done. The story takes sometime in the mid to late 21st century where because all of the climate disasters and other catastrophes corporations have started literal wars against other corporations to maximize their holdings and profits. Governments have been relegated to a lesser position. The US has become a theocratic fascist state that has removed the rights previously held by most of its citizens, especially women and non-whites. They don't really mind that the corporations wage war on Canadian, Mexican, and the other American corporations. The national governments of those being invaded don't seem mind as much as one would think.

Thematically this is anti-war, corporate, elite, theocratic, fascists and much else. That's mostly expressed through polemics, the book says so, and somewhat through what happens. Again, it's a rescue mission, so they're mostly just traveling from one point to another looking for the guy. There's not really much to it in terms of plot, but that's to be expected due to its length. It doesn't really show off much of it what it talks about because of how constrained it is. It's all elsewhere. Why it's so restricted is explained by the narrative and makes perfect sense, butI think the realism in this case got in the way of being cool and fun. I would've liked it more if it wasn't so straightforward until the the reveal at the end which is entirely thematically appropriate. All in all, it's fine. I don't feel strongly either way about it.

Rating: 3/5

Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 150 years ago and perfected cave exploration, dungeoneering, pirateering, and a whole host of other things which people to this day struggle to write about in a compelling way. What a difference a good author makes. I just wish there were fantasy authors who tackled these subjects with as much skill as Twain, but really when you separate the wheat from the chaff, all you're left with is a couple Robert E. Howard and N.C. Wyeth stories, here and there a story by Vance, one story by Wolfe, and of course Tolkien. Why is one of the most fundamental aspects of fantasy (exploration) so largely skipped over? Everybody just seems to assume writing about it would be a bore, but all that really says about these authors is that they're just not good enough to make it interesting. I will say I'd rather not read a bad author's attempt at writing exploration, so I guess I should thank them for sparing me.

You forgot Edgar Burroughs. "Chronicles of Mars" is the best sci fi/fantasy series I ever read. For some reason I find the genius scientist Ras Tavas who turned himself into a femboy, has zero indications of a moral compass and provided plot hooks for several books with his insane experiments, while suffering absolutely no repercussions and technically being one of the good guys, to be extremely fun and compelling. It's such a simple "I do everything FOR SCIENCE" archetype, but it's so well executed and charming...

I'm reading this right now and here are my thoughts (about half way done with tbe book):
>Caroline and Fred remind me of Leela and Fry from futurama which is killing my immersion and vibe because I keep laughing and reading their dialogue in the cartoony voices
>The premise of the book's intelligence taking over is awesome but severely ruined by Asimov's laws rotting their way into an otherwise cool scifi premise
>The death jocky stuff is pretty awesome and edgy which is fun, but a lot of it comes off as though I'm listening to a youtuber try and teach me about "the first guy to hit level 99 woodcutting in runescape" and the author pretends everyone in the universe cares about runescape
>Breaking the laws of physics and giving the AI ftl teleportation is retarded and further ruins the fun
otherwise the book is awesome and probably my 2nd favorite sci fi book so far.

I don't know what to read next. I love Lem, but I'm not in the mood for more existentialism. I just finished reading Ellisons' Blood's a Rover, which reignited that Fallout flame, but I already read A Canticle for Leibowitz. Adjacent to that is the stalker world, but I've just recently read Roadside Picnic, and as far as Metro goes, I'm content with just having played the videogames. I love Heinlein, but I've already read enough from him for the time being and I want to read something from someone else, same for Dick, same for Vonnegut, same for Clarke. I don't like Asimov. Mixed feelings on Gibson, and the most modern book I read was Stations of the Tide, which I really didn't like. I'd disagree with that other poster and say it's just Book 3 that's shit. Book 2 is good, but it promises you an Ocean's 11 style heist and then makes a left turn into a pirate story for half the book so I think that pissed off a lot of readers. Book 4 is never coming out and after struggling through 3 I don't even care about the crappy stakes that have been set up.

Book 1 is great though and still worth a read.
