What's the point of having knowledge or superior-intelligence when fools and ignorant are just happier.

Intelligence is a tool for hunters, inventors and leaders. Modern life rarely puts the average person in any of these roles, and being intelligent is largely useless. You'd be far happier as a sheep who goes with the flow and uncritically believes what he's told.
People who elevate intelligence as the ultimate virtue are autists who want to believe that an IQ above 100 automatically makes them an interesting person who is on the fast track to success.

ignorance and foolishness lead to ruin
true happiness is a virtue, as such it requires knowledge, sacrifice and wisdom to be achieved
knowledge is not the cause of unhappiness, but rather what unconsciously awakens you to search for the root of your unhappiness (which is usually some sort of fear or pride)

Woah. There's no good evidence for it, but I guess I'll just have to accept some idiot on the internet claiming that a surprising research result with no evidence is true.

I feel a compulsion to gain knowledge
It is not about wanting to be smarter, it is not about me reading a book because I think that the knowledge within it will improve my life or make me superior than others
It is because I have a burning desire to simply 'know' regardless of the practicality of that knowledge
I suppose I just never grew up
When I was a kid I would spend hours reading all kinds of non-fiction books
Books about early life, books about dinosaurs, books about different scientists, books about the universe, books about plants and books about history and famous events
Hell I was even obsessed with books about world records
It's not about passing the time, I just need to know

Knowledge and intelligence are obviously not the same thing.
Probably the best one can hope for is to have perfectly average qualities and abundant resources. A nice fellow of 100 or so IQ surrounded by a moderately wealthy, loving family in a peaceful community with high expectations can work through Tacitus and Calculus and mostly get the gist, then put them aside and tend to a happy home and keep the faith and move smoothly from the cradle to the grave without so much writhing or wondering about what could be missing.
Meanwhile, highly gifted children learn quickly that what they have is essentially a disease that will cause them sharp pain forever and from which everyone will benefit but them. They have a higher rate of all sorts of mental illness and premature death, and even the happiest cases find themselves sooner or later bored by what everyone seems to believe should thrill them. It isn't a deal that anyone would take but for glory, which is not forever for anyone but God on high and swift-footed Achilles.

Philosophy and literature generally give you a broader, more complex perspective on various things. The average person is a captive of their time, with only the views their society instilled in them to guide them. That's enough for most people. I'd wager there were plenty of people throughout history who were happy and wholesome despite never picking up a book. On the flip side, many cruel, spiteful, and miserable individuals have read all the right books and know all the pithy phrases and quotes you'd expect a sophisticated civilized individual to know. If you don't see the attraction or value of philosophy by now then you shouldn't quit and spend your time more productively elsewhere.
