Who has read the Imitation of Christ? Thoughts?

>> No.22477215

According to this book the best way to imitate Christ is to deeply despise oneself even though Christ says absolutely nothing like this anywhere in the Gospels

I feel bad for Thomas of Kempis because he was buried while still alive and for this reason he was refused glorification. Very sad. Many such cases...

Where and how does it say to despise yourself?

The truth is that you must subordinate yourself and your ego to God. You must stop caring about what you want to happen and accept that whatever happens will, ultimately, be good.

>If you wish to learn and appreciate something worth while, then love to be unknown and considered as nothing. Truly to know and despise self is the best and most perfect counsel.
>Had you but once entered into perfect communion with Jesus or tasted a little of His ardent love, you would care nothing at all for your own comfort or discomfort but would rejoice in the reproach you suffer; for love of Him makes a man despise himself.
>BLESSED is he who appreciates what it is to love Jesus and who despises himself for the sake of Jesus.
>I praise You, my God, and extol You forever! I despise myself and cast myself before You in the depths of my unworthiness. Behold, You are the Holy of holies, and I the scum of sinners!
I know you guys don't read but all you have to do is open the text on ccel or gutenberg and hit ctrl+f. This book is one of the worst "Just stomp on me with boot Lord I'm lower than a fucking wormmmmmmm" self hatred manuals I've ever read

Oh good finds. Thanks! I agree with those passages. We are worms. I know that I am not holy and do not even deserve to exist. I acknowledge that my fate and my entire existence is at the mercy of God.

Despising one's self unlocks true joy; it isn't what you think it is.

Damn, that's too bad. Are there any good books about imitating Christ that aren't self-hatred manuals?

This kind of theology creates an inferiority complex pathology or a fake larping humbleness. You don't get this kind of thing in the Greek Fathers.

Maybe something written by a televangelist, prosperity ,gospel preacher ?

>> No.22478943

Friedrich Nietzsche stated that this was "one of those books which I cannot hold in my hand without a physiological reaction: it exudes a perfume of the Eternal-Feminine which is strictly for Frenchmen – or Wagnerians".[74]

So it's probably pretty good and well written

Pope John Paul II was a big fan of the book, allegedly.
