very nice. i'm happy with all 3 Folio editions I have, I hope you're as happy with yours.
my main complaint is that in retrospect, they're far too pretty to read, so I also ended up getting cheaper reading copies of the book to avoid any unnecessary damage.
>>22464715
the Folio edition of Haunting of Hill House is objectively nicer than any other edition of the book, excluding the first print, but the first print sells for significantly more making Folio the best choice for a collector's edition.
Also, they're the only illustrated edition of Trainspotting, too.
If you're buying Folio willy-nilly, then it's likely not worth it, but they're decent quality and look great for what they offer.
In the end only the individual can determine whether or not their purchase was worth it.

>> No.22465941

They're in the thread somewhere; the guy knows his shit. He breaks down their marketing model (i.e. LARPing as super high quality when they're really just slightly above average hardbacks with standard binding, faux "keeping alive artisanship" when they're really just outsourcing to a mid-level commercial binder, gimmicks like having literal whos do some design and par for the course introductions/afterwards/etc.) to sell consumers on them. Just look at the language of their website (it's all sales). He also brought up their business model as being about collectibles that depreciate as soon as they're bought (remember: the actual quality doesn't justify the price). They're worth it only if you pay much less--personally, if I were a big fan of W&P I'd personally pay $50, maybe $75, for OP but $240 is a laughably ridiculous ripoff. Also, someone asks for an example of an actual quality publisher and he guides then toward one (I think he sprinkled in details of what markers to look for thoughout the posts as well).

Anyway, the whole thread is worth a look. Foliofags got outed as simple-minded consoomers taken in by bullshit marketing and sales tactics. Folio Society is all branding and they really are the literary equivalent of Funkos as people say. When this is pointed out to thoss taken in by them they always project the same shit: "you're jealous...you're seething...it's none of your business how we spend our money you poorfag!" Kek.

P.S. the thread is funny because OP bought the set thinking they'd be bound in elephant leather, foliofags discussed it as if it represented quality, and an anon pointed out "elephant hide" is just a type of paper, kek.

With a hook in it, hope it lean over
He got some money, then that's where I'm headed
Pussy A-1, just like his credit
He got a beard, well, I'm tryna wet it
I let him taste it, and now he diabetic
I don't wanna spit, I wanna gulp
I wanna gag, I wanna choke
I want you to touch that lil' dangly thing that swing in the back of my throat
My head game is fire, punani Dasani
It's going in dry, and it's coming out soggy
I ride on that thing like the cops is behind me (yuh, ah)

i've stated it in the thread before and i'll say it again
some books are better from FS, some aren't. i like Folio's binding and art, especially when the alternative to an accessible version of Hill House, for example, looks like picrel with the best option being the penguin halloween collection, but even that has its flaws.
the LOA version with all of her novels and some stories is nice too, but i would like to express that Hill House is one of my favorite horror novels and as such would prefer to have a nice standalone copy
the first edition of this sells for around $1000-2000 in good condition last time I checked ebay, and I cannot justify spending that much on a book assuming I could even afford it
therefore, the Folio edition is the best choice
it's all about personal taste and availability. you can't just blanket say "only buy collector's or paperbacks" or "only ever buy FS" because they're both retarded blanket statements

I would never consent to own one of these. Some folios are bad. Some are okay. The War and Peace op posted is nice but for $300 thats insane. And there's no discussion of translation itt. If you're such a Tolstoy enthusiast that you need $300 editions of his novels your first priority would definitely be the translation. Maybe the folio one is good though I don't know.

It's multiple anons making fun of folifags, retard. Kek, do you think overspending on Funko books makes you part of a discriminating group everyone looks up to? Figures.

In every single thread like this several folifags demonstrate theyre mindless consoomer idiots by regurgitating marketing bullshit, not knowing the first thing about actual quality, and frequently admitting they've never even read the book they bought and will not read their overpriced Funko collectable because they want to keep it pristine (not realizing it became a used book reduced to around 1/3 the price they paid as soon as they purchased it, kek).

Funkos are a fair comparison but another would be Home Shopping Network sales tactics. They're also like the collectibles you see in late night commercials, coins that aren't legal tender or commemorative plates, with the blue screen and phone number at the end while the narrator says "operators are standing by."

I don't care because the value to me comes from having a nice collectible of my favorite book. i will not ever resell it unless i'm ever genuinely starving and pressed for cash.
>they're literally just decorations (like a Funko)
paintings are literally just decorations (like a Funko). sculptures are just decorations (like a Funko). a dishwasher you never use is literally just a decoration (like a Funko).
Silly argument. If I want a nice decorative item in my house I'll get one.
>they aren't even high quality relative to the price you pay (that's just marketing)
Well, let's compare. Once again, I'll bring up Hill House, and you'll conveniently not address it because you're incapable or unwilling to understand.
A first edition Hill House, which is objectively the prettiest version of the book and the ideal to own, costs around $1000-2000 for an okay to good copy.
Folio, on the other hand, is the second best option for a pretty version of the book, and it only costs ~$100, with varying shipping. I think I spent $120ish for mine.
I've also not regurgitated anything about anything, I just think it's silly that you're so upset about something like this.
You can't understand that it's not a FOLIO GOOD or FOLIO BAD thing. They're just another publisher dealing more collectible-oriented items with the same pros/cons of other publishers.

It's not much of a collectible if it reduces to 1/3 the value by becoming a used book before you even open it up.
>paintings are literally just decorations
They're unlike FS books because they are literally one of a kind. FS will market something as a "limited edition" and retards don't even fathom it's a marketing gimmick (i.e. they know how many units they can move and saying "limited edition" excuses elevating the price while creating a sense of urgency in the consumer--its sales 101). Also, there's no such thing as a "used painting" and you can hang it on the wall, letting it fulfill its purpose, unlike an unread book (kek).
>I'll bring up Hill House, and you'll conveniently not address it
You aren't addressing the manipulative marketing, the false projection of high quality as if it's indicative of value, and the pattern folifags have when it comes to regurgitating such nonsense. I'll add they lie about artisan craftsmanship as well; they just outsource to a mid-sized printshop that isn't even specialized.

Your copy of Hill House is a still just a Funko. You might like it, I'm sure people who collect little plastic statues are fond of them as well, but acting like it's valuable or that ownership is somehow indicative of status is complete consumerist retardation.

The portuguese translation of War and Peace is made by a couple. The woman, a russian, translates the books as close to the original as possible while the man, a portuguese, revises it to make it sound good in portuguese, then the woman makes some adjustments based on his revisions, taking care to see if everything is accurate and in the style of the author and they both read the translation together alongside the russian original until they reach a point where they're both satisfied with it. Folio offers some nice books if you pay less than 10 bucks, and they're lovely, well made books, but offer only a shallow reflection of traditional small press craftsmanship. I have golden Cockerel, nonesuch, l.e. club, aldus society, etc. Folio has some comparable books. Nothing exists on the same level for price folio charges.
Older folio books don't have folio society written all over them. Newer editions are a bit of a gimmick.
