dfw used 'marijuana addiction' to get out of finishing a degree in philosophy at harvard
got into a halfway house for his
marijuana addiction
and went to NA for his
marijuana addiction
and wrote about the people he met

that's half the book, the other half is boring bullshit about a tennis academy and the family that runs it
worth noting that wallace played a little bit of tennis as a teenager
getting the phrase 'regionally ranked' out into the echo-sphere was an act of genius on his part lmao

I have read the book.
It's the classic "I have some interesting ideas I want to write out so I'm going to create a "story" so that I can put them all down" book.

He's an interesting, entertaining writer, but there is something about this style that I don't like.
Just write some essays or be a columnist dude.

We have been conveying idea through story since antiquity and I can see no reason to stop, certainly not because you can not stop tugging on your dick.

"A man undergoing intensive psychotherapy discovers that he is brittle, hollow, and transparent to others, and becomes either transcendentally enlightened or schizophrenic."

"You can’t induce a moral sensibility the same way you’d train a rat. The kid has to learn by his own experience how to learn to balance the short- and long-term pursuit of what he wants.’"

"a classic illustration of the antinomically schizoid function of the post-industrial capitalist mechanism, whose logic presented commodity as the escape-from-anxieties-of-mortality-which-escape-is-itself-psychologically-fatal, as detailed in perspicuous detail in M. Gilles Deleuze’s posthumous Incest and the Life of Death in Capitalist Entertainment, which she’d be happy to lend the figures standing up somewhere above the lamp’s white fire, one of them tapping something irritatingly against the lamp’s conic metal shade, if they’d promise to return it and not mark it up."

We see two extremes of the human mind. The one of perfect Zen order/calm, and the other - a disintegrated mind. The course of DFWs life evidenced which way he went. But that is unimportant. Underneath the brittle human visages lies a tender soul, peering into it is risky business, but wear it on your sleeve and you will end up happy or in an institution, sometimes both.

This movie, Infinite Jest, does it teach? Or addict? Where do we draw the line?
Living death is like walking when dead, all libidinals are short-circuited by the desire machine, until it reaches the accelerated self-destruction that is it's inversion from it's life pursuing origins. But is that teaching, is it suicide, or is it the selection at the end of the term?
Nice movie.
