Yeah, you just learn that things don't happen the way they're normally portrayed. I read a ton of "Marxist" or "old Left" framed history, and they simply had good approaches to figuring out how all of society changed over time. I'm a reactionary now, and I'd still recommend them.

My favorite for a beginner is Patrick O'Brien's Atlas of World History. There's a few editions, but I think they're all good. Lots of neat maps showing economic and social changes across the world without getting overly bogged down in names, dates, and local dramas. Still Eurocentric, but the whole world gets good coverage. Great foundation.

I have begun Hobsbawm's "Age of __" tetralogy, which also uses a similar (old lefty) framing but is very well sourced and I would agree, he does an excellent job charting the changes kicked off by the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution. A lot of enlightenment and liberal propaganda has covered up how savagely traditional life was ripped apart during that period.

Hobsbawm I believe uses some elements of Marx's material analysis of historical development in his (Europe-focused) history of the world since 1789. At least, he puts a lot of emphasis on economic factors and class relations and their influences.
