You should learn. It's cool being able to read stuff like Plato and the New Testament, untranslated. The best part is with dead languages with a limited canon (i.e. we have what survived, what we found, and that's it) you can pretty easily cross reference the usage of any specific word in a single text to its usage in every other surviving text that we know of.
I learned by starting with the Codex Vaticanus, word by word, learning the grammar and structure on the way. Seeing this unusual conjugation (I don't speak German, so I hadn't seen noun cases before) got me interested enough to learn about the grammar and syntax in-depth. Every time I got to a word that I didn't know yet, I made it into a flash card. As I gained more context for words, I made notes on the back of them (connections to history, culture, etymology, etc) that I would see while reviewing my vocabulary. As I learned uncial and miniscule, I began to add write the words in these scripts to the front.
This approach worked especially well because I didn't have to learn the entire language to not only read specific texts, but also to be analytical about them. However, the more texts I applied this to, the less I had to create new cards. Now, whenever I run across a Greek word or a word with obviously Greek etymology, I look up the Koine and Attic, and make a new card.
At the end of every day, I review all of my cards out loud, to work on my pronunciation.
