I finished reading The lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay, what an anticlimactic and unsatisfying ending that was, Rodrigo's family deserved him to live, and then half of the stuff happening in the epilogue really, really doesn't make any sense, like Alvar converting and being shown to believe in his new faith.
Ah well.
What should I choose to read next between Ready Player One, Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujould, and the screenplay to A modern ocean by Shane Carruth?

Electric Forest - Tanith Lee (1979)

Magadala Cled, called Ugly by everyone she knows, is a twenty-six year old naturally born person who lives on planet Indigo. Seemingly literally everyone else was born through genetic engineering that selected for only the best examples of every trait. As to expected of a natural birth, she's considered deformed, hideous, and stunted. When others look upon her they're visibly unable to contain their revulsion. She doesn't let anyone know that this bothers her, but inside she intensely seethes and loathes everyone. Even if she could afford it, she knows that cosmetic surgery couldn't help her in any way. A life-changing opportunity comes her way when an ultrawealthy and extremely attractive young man offers her a new body. All she has to do is whatever he wants and she'll never have worry about anything again. Magadala is very suspicious and doesn't give in easily, but offer is so tempting, regardless of its cost.

Your enjoyment of Electric Forest probably will mostly depend on your perspective on and tolerance for the specific events of the story. I don't know how much you'd get from this if you approach it in an adversarial manner or believe it to be in bad taste. Magadala has understandably severe body image issues, low self-esteem, and a festering resentment for everything. She becomes part of a psychosexually domineering relationship, though she isn't submissive. Her situation is treated as a sort of voluntary horror that she endures because she believes the benefits to be worthwhile. I found its exploration of bodily autonomy, identity, and a host of other psychological issues to be enjoyably written. While there's a bit of flirting and sex, the primary focus of the plot is a mystery thriller. Magadala's new body was designed for a specific purpose, which she's not informed of, though it clearly involves social manipulation. The more involved she becomes, the more she realizes how little control she has over her life now.

There are several mentions of other literary works in the text that are used to describe what is being read. There's Frankenstein, Dracula, Pygmalion, Shakespeare, and others. It made me think of a few more as well. At first I thought it was a bit much, but given how it ends, their inclusion makes sense. I enjoyed this from the start until the end, and up until the epilogue this was a solid four stars. I found the epilogue to be hilarious because it reminded me of one of my all-time favorite movies. It was quite the unexpected experience and I found myself somewhat in disbelief that I wanted to give it five stars. I then looked at the reviews and many others had almost the exact opposite reaction to the ending, which is reasonable. I found it to be less reasonable though to include unmarked spoilers for the ending in a number of them, including the most liked. This book has greatly improved my opinion of Lee and eventually I'll have to read more from her.

I came across this while looking at a /sffg/ member's profile and since he rated 5 stars I thought I'd give a chance since we have relatively similar tastes and have a considerable amount of overlap with what we've read. I probably wouldn't have any gotten around to reading it otherwise. I still have 3 days to fill of short fiction for the month. If there's anything else you want me to try of suitable length and it has its own entry, let me know. Technically this a novel since it's a bit more than 40k words, but whatever. Starting tomorrow and for the next six days I'll be posting the novelettes from the the Far Reaches, which is a commissioned collection by Amazon of individually released novelettes by popular SF authors. I don't know if the authors didn't care much, or what happened, but it was a disappointing affair like the previous similar collection I read from Amazon. Oh well. Yes, this is basically filler because reasons, etc.

Spirit Forging desu

On a serious note, I find it somewhat sad that good female science-fiction writers tend to write typical female stories in futuristic settings. Like, those stories are still great, engaging and well-written...but they are ultimately unremarkable. Most likely my bias as a man, but I find stories about more abstract ideas, goals and important issues to be not just more interesting, but objectively more valuable and significant that endless exploration of human relationships.
I guess my female counterpart would find this foolish, seeing those as detatched from reality and ulitmately worthless.

As that one anon joked about cultivation, it reminds me of the only Cultivation written by a woman that I've seen: Street Cultivation. Not a great story, painfuly average at times and I'd rate it 5.5 - 6 out of 10. What matters is the message. The entire message behind the trillogy was focused on a man reaching for money and power to get a better life, crawling out of poverty, but in fact according to the story (not said directly) he should have focused on finding a good girl to settle with, not fighting it out with mad cultivators or doing things greater than life.

This reinterpretation of Xianxia and implict critic on the genre by the female author seemed very representative of female persepctive on values and what's worth doing in life.
I might have gotten somewhat cynical after reading almost 1000 fantasy stories, but I swear I can detect whether something was written by a man or a woman with strange precision, based only on the covabulary, topics tackled and the framing of them. Women just straight-up don't consider the same things valuable and I doubt a woman could be capable of writing a fantasy story in the same way a man does.

Sorry for a random monologue, I'm going for a 12h work shift tomorrow and needed to let it out of me while I can.

I tried reading both of Sarah Lin's stories, and the first book of each both just felt bland. Street Cultivation's protagonist is just so nothing, and the concept of this incredibly capitalistic version of cultivation is cool, but it ultimately means very little. Meanwhile, the other series, Soulhome or whatever, has, again, a neat concept it does very little with. Its protagonist is at least a character, he's just a very one-note one. I didn't really notice anything like what you thought was the message in either, so maybe I just don't read into these things that way, but hey. Honestly, they barely seemed to be 'about' anything.

>but in fact according to the story...
In many xianxia the main character wants to find a good girl to settle down with but in doing so they find that they need to destroy thousands of clans and become immortal. Then around spirit severing they realize that relations with women are just a distraction from greatness which is just standard Taoism/all religions.

One could see the opposition of social trends, fantasy writers on a given region write contrary to their societies. Socially atomized West prefers having relationships with other people, communal East focuses on individuality and eschewing others.

What are some sffg books that deal a lot with the liminal boundary between humanity and technology, especially in terms of innocence being weaponized. I particularly like prose and general storytelling in the vein of Wildbow. Long, xenofictive, nobledark, pathological themes and focus. Picrel kind of scratches that itch but obviously it's limited by the medium. I've read the Forever War and pretty much any of the normie tier sci-fi/fantasy you can think of.

Regardless of what people have been claiming for decades (centuries really) about the West being moribund, neither China nor Japan, even if you combine them, are capable of matching Western and especially American cultural exportation. Japan is much more of a rival than China but even they're trying to move forward by adopting more Western sensibilities and storytelling techniques. Even then there's a lot of concerns in the industry about the long term impact of their work culture and how profitable fanservice will be in the years to come. The West's cultural hegemony is secure for the next century or so at absolutely minimum, it'll just wax and wane like it always has.

>His breath caught, and he stretched out a hand, brushed a finger across the heavy gold signet ring on the cord. Across the crane in flight. How had she come by this? Under the Light, how? “I recognize it,” he told her, his voice suddenly hoarse.
>“My name is Nynaeve ti al’Meara Mandragoran. The message I want sent is this. My husband rides from World’s End toward Tarwin’s Gap, toward Tarmon Gai’don. Will he ride alone?”
>He trembled. He did not know whether he was laughing or crying. Perhaps both. She was his wife? “I will send your message, my Lady, but it has nothing to do with me. I am a merchant. Malkier is dead. Dead, I tell you.”
>The heat in her eyes seemed to intensify, and she gripped her long, thick braid with one hand. “Lan told me once that Malkier lives so long as one man wears the hadori in pledge that he will fight the Shadow, so long as one woman wears the ki’sain in pledge that she will send her sons to fight the Shadow. I wear the ki’sain, Master Aldragoran. My husband wears the hadori. So do you. Will Lan Mandragoran ride to the Last Battle alone?”
>He was laughing, shaking with it. And yet, he could feel tears rolling down his cheeks. It was madness! Complete madness! But he could not help himself. “He will not, my Lady. I cannot stand surety for anyone else, but I swear to you under the Light and by my hope of rebirth and salvation, he will not ride alone.”
>Well, Managan, Gorenellin,” he demanded, “do you still remember who you are? Do you remember your blood? Who rides with me for Tarwin’s Gap?”
>For a moment, he thought neither man would speak, but then Gorenellin was on his feet, tears glistening in his eyes. “The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don,” he said softly.
>“The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!” Managan shouted, leaping up so fast he overturned his chair.
>Laughing, Aldragoran joined them, all three shouting at the top of their lungs. “The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!”

Laughter melded with tears, an alchemical fusion of sentiments that transcended mortal bounds, a cultivation breakthrough of emotions. It was insanity personified! Profound lunacy! Yet, resistance was futile. "He shall not venture alone, my Lady. Though I cannot vouch for others, my vow resonates, witnessed by the Celestial Realm and my aspiration for renewal and salvation. He shall not journey in solitude."

But as he tried to deepen his cultivation, to break through to the core realm, a shadowy figure emerged, an old senior from his sect, his aura oppressive and formidable, a guardian of the path he sought to tread. The old senior unleashed a barrage of attacks, each strike targeting his defensive formations. The formations, an intricate web of energy, quivered and strained under the assault.

"Now, Managan, Gorenellin," his decree resounded, each word like a strike of the divine gong, a resonating mantra in the cultivation world. "Does your true self endure? Does the blood of your lineage course through your meridians? Who shall tread the path at my side, uniting at Tarwin’s Chasm, a place of profound cultivation convergence?"

A suspended hush lingered, two souls standing on the cusp of revelation, like cultivators awaiting the opening of an ancient forbidden scripture. Then, Gorenellin surged forth, his eyes shimmering with tears, yet his spirit aflame, his qi and aura harmonizing. "The Golden Crane takes flight for Tarmon Gai’don," his voice intoned, a melody of fate resonating with the very rhythm of the universe.

"The Golden Crane takes flight for Tarmon Gai’don!" Managan's roar filled the air, his fervor toppling him from his seat, a tempestuous whirlwind of cultivation energy.

In harmonious crescendo, Aldragoran merged with their triumphant chorus, a trinity of souls harmonizing with the celestial currents, their cultivator's bond unbreakable. "The Golden Crane takes flight for Tarmon Gai’don!" Meanwhile, the battle raged on, the defensive formations quaking under the pressure of the old senior's relentless assault, each strike a test of Aldragoran's resilience and determination to ascend to the core cultivation realm.

The only overlap is that they're bother very good at reading and manipulating people and are both willing to go to extremes in order to accomplish their plans. Their end goals are also similar in nature, with Kellhus seeking the absolute, and Fang Yuan trying to become truly immortal, both of which involve achieving true philosophical freedom.
Fang Yuan is much more interesting and deep since his characterization isn't arbitrary like Kellhus'. Why is Kellhus a supergenius inhuman manipulator? Because he is, he was born that way. Why is Fang Yuan like he is? Because he started out as a normal man and lived an unnaturally long life full of tragedy and setbacks until he was gradually worn down and all that remained of him was his desire to be free.

How It Unfolds, The Far Reaches - James S. A. Corey (2023)
Slow light allows for the duplication of matter over the vast distances of the galaxy, including of people. Thousands of colonies can be started from a single origin point. The baton race to ensure the eternal existence of humanity has begun. Survival is all that matters, regardless of the cost, or how it must be accomplished, or the living conditions there. Out of desperation eternal recurrence has been achieved, but how meaningful is it?

I have a lot of issues with this novelette, but none of them are major aside from being baffled that a certain decision is endlessly repeated when better options must have existed. It could be that I'm rating it as I am because of the author, but I hope not. I primarily see it as a metaphor and it's not one that I like. As with almost every other story in this collection I can only see the overarching theme as being about futility. Maybe others can see it differently, but I'm unable to. I consider this a fail considering who the authors are.

Goodkind is hilarious
Not actually worth reading but about once a year I go over this post and chuckle
http://sandstormreviews.blogspot.com/2006/08/goodkind-parodies.html

Here's the hero booting a child in the face

>Princess Violet glared at him. "My mother says that Confessor Kahlan will come back and that we'll have a surprise for her the next time she comes here. I just want you to know because my mother said you'll be dead by then. My mother says I get to decide what to do to her. First, I'm going to cut off her hair. " Her hands were in fists, her face red. "Then i'm going to let all the guards rape her, every one! Then I'm going to put her in the dungeon for a few years so they'll have someone to play with! Then when I get tired of hurting her, I'll have her head chopped off and put it on a pole where I can watch it rot!"
>Richard actually felt sorry for the little Princess. The sadness for her came over him in a wave. At that feeling, he was surprised to feel the thing in him that had come awake rise up.
>Princess Violet squeezed her eyes shut, stuck her tongue out far as she could.
>It was like a red flag.
>The strength of the awakened power exploded through him.
>He could feel her jaw shattter like a crystal goblet on a stone floor when his boot came up under it. The impact of the blow lifted the Princess into the air. Her own teeth severed her tongue before they, too, shattered. She landed on her back, a good distance away, trying to scream through the gushing blood.

And that's from the first book which is before the author went really off the rails

I just finished Mother of Learning and I really enjoyed it. I particularly liked how the main character, despite having his character flaws, was generally just kind of a level headed person who tried to think things out and not be retarded while also being neither comically evil nor an obnoxious justicefag. The author portrayed him as reasonably intelligent in a realistic sort of way without resorting to making him some 900iq genius chessmaster who might as well be bending fate or making all the other characters retarded just so that the mc can shine.

Also I like really long stories.

Does anyone have any recommendations for similar books, webnovels, etc.? Not really a fan of litrpgs as a concept but I'm willing to give most anything a chance.

Void, The Far Reaches - Veronica Roth (2023)
Ace is a janitor on an interstellar passenger ship that experiences considerable time dilation. It's basically the only of its kind that will transport people and not exclusively cargo. Those who come aboard rarely are ever seen again and the crew have become entirely detached from time and to a lesser extent being able to relate to people. Ace generally stays apart from everyone, but now's time for her to play detective because a murder has been committed and she gets really into doing so. There's no one else who cares to do so, so why not?

I was surprised that I liked this novelette the most of this collection, but barely not enough to rate it higher. I wouldn't have expected that considering what else she's written, despite its popularity, isn't really my thing. The author that I do like didn't have good showings this time. I may only have this liked this one relatively the most because it's also the only story of this Amazon collection of notable writers that didn't feel futile.

After reading The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories I'm convinced he had an enduring love for genre and lowbrow fiction in general. peace was horror, horror is a genre, it's my favorite work of his but it was definitely genre. a lot of his short stories were clearly done for paychecks and were simply pandering to the readers of magazines, his love for craft only shines through consistently in his novels

I don't think he needed the money.

Malazanfags like to scare people away from it. It's not a damn James Joyce novel, or fucking William gaddis it's just that characters talk and think about the world they inhabit as if they actually live there, instead of explaining every little thing in their heads. The prose is digestible and well-written, the stakes are high, the atmosphere is wonderful, the characters are good, and weird fantasy shit happens frequently. You will get confused, but the mystery of the world is what makes it fun. Stay away from breakdowns of the series, even the "spoiler free" ones, because they'll just ruin the magic for you.

And by all means, don't be a binge reading consoomer retard, take breaks between books and read other shit if you feel yourself getting burnt out. It's okay if you forget a couple things. The books are huge, you can't be expected to remember all that shit even if you read them all consecutively. Enjoy them at your own pace.

It is very dated, in terms of the tropes and style it is written in. I read it nearly 20 years ago and it felt dated then, I can only imagine how young people now trying to read it feel, probably like it's prehistoric.

That's what I did and it disappointed the shit out of me. It is not like A Song of Ice and Fire in any substantive way, to the point that GRRM claiming it was a major inspiration feels like a lie.
I dropped it about halfway into book two, and I would probably give book one a 3/6.

I don't know what this post has to do with anything I said. MS&T isn't dated because it was written in the 1980s, it's dated because of its subject matter and the way it is told. There are plenty of books older than MS&T that I don't feel are nearly as dated.

Unironically Kushiel's Dart. It's not weird as such but it is intentionally ornate and clearly meant to fit the tone of the story, which it does.

I don't know why you replied to that post, but I since I posted my thoughts about ratings recently I thought I'd go without the ratings for these novelettes since I'd usually put a word rather than a number for something this short. They're still rated on my Goodreads profile and I'll resume the ratings after I post all the novelettes in the Far Reaches Collection. After this is basically novellas for rest of the month.
