What I need to read before I reread Tolkien to experience his works to the fullest?

Not much? The Hobbit and LOTR are both pretty accessible to new readers. Then you can read The Silmarillion, which is basically a big history book about everything that happens in Middle-Earth BEFORE LOTR.

Tolkien was a bit autistic in that everything you need to know, he tells you, one way or another.
