So what are the books that are heavily referential with metacommentary before nukes considered?

And what's an example of Pynchon being heavily referential with metacommentary? Please don't just say a book title.

You are asking for a book title.

I'm asking for an excerpt. Sentence, paragraph, whatever. My guess is no one knows what they're talking about lmao.

The style. As far as content goes, I’m still not 100% sure what postmodern means. It’s all vague

Precursors to postmodernism. Examples would be Tristram Shandy and Sartor Resartus. Some early ones near the modern period are debated because nuclear warheads had not been made yet, but even those will contain criticisms of modernist sciences, for example At Swim Two Birds.

Modernist literature is relatively identifiable, and one of the things that makes it easier to identify is that modernist works tend to have more distinct relations to the very clear and explicit ideologies which were present at the time. The philosophical relationships between works of art and broader cultural events was clear. With World War II, this clarity starts to disappear. Without such clear indications of an artistic works 'stance' so to speak, it has been more difficult for clear trends to be identified and named. Moreover, critics themselves were very interested in classification during the modernist period, and have not been so interested in it since the definitive modern period. Postmodernism, then, is really just an easy way to refer to any contemporary work that does not seem to fit easily into the general understanding of modernist works. However, metamodernism is probably a better word; it is almost a transliteration, but suggests that the works we call postmodernism are still really within the scope of modernism and engaging with the same themes and ideas, but just in a decadent stage, the same way that mannerism is really just late renaissance.

You subhuman mutt that's a description not a name. Also a completely useless & unenlightening description. The problem is: muh precursors are the same, often even more postmoderny than the drivel that limped its way out of uni creative writing programs. You can close the browser now, retard. Not further input is required from your dumb ass.

Postmodernism generally criticizes modernism. The reason you see similarities is because postmodernism often satirises modernist thought or style. It's post- because it can only happen once there is a modernism to criticize, which is why works which do similar things before modernism are not considered postmodern. Metamodernism would exclude any developments beyond those in modernism, which is really gives modernism far more credit than its due, as postmodernists are wont to incorporate movements previous to modernism in much the same way.

It's useful so long as your academic structure comes from the enlightenment, but for purely fart sniffing reasons among friends you might find it lacking, yes.
