Is William Gibson/PKD considered 'literary'?

Considered by whom?

Why do you care that other people think about it? Why do you need validation from random strangers on the other side of the world?

>> No.22339958

>>22339911
They're often considered literary by the academic establishment in an attempt to include genre trash in their considerations (the usual grasp at "diversity") but neither are particularly literary in affect and Dick often struggled to write a coherent sentence let alone something of artistic merit.

Yeah because people who major in English are the ones you need to emulate to be successful. Sure, buddy. But why don’t you just become an academic yourself and validate your own choices like they do? PKD writes stories that are often more entertaining than lit fiction. Neuromancer sucked bawls though.

No, it's because they are the most qualified people to decide what is literary and what's not and I'd rather listen to them than some genre fiction autist. It's an easy way to filter out garbage lit. Say, if I wanted to read a good science fiction novel, I'd choose Gene Wolfe or Ballard over Stephen King, because the former have their stamp of approval.

Dude, have you ever been to college? I’ve had a few creative writing classes as electives, and the professors always talk about Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood. My professor even gifted everyone in the class a copy of The Bluest Eye bc he believed that it was peak literary fiction, so if you care about what “muhhh academics” think, read women authors exclusively. Conversely, if you had a brain and the gumption to think for yourself, you’d dig into the classics and go from there. Read more and you’ll discover what’s good to you bc at the end of the day that’s all that matters. No one irl gives a shit if you read whatever the fuck and liked it or not. They don’t. They only care if you’re /fit/, wealthy and of, at least, average intelligence

Sometimes they do get it wrong (Handmaids tale is garbage tier prose), but largely you wont go wrong with literature deemed literary by scholars.
>Conversely, if you had a brain and the gumption to think for yourself, you’d dig into the classics and go from there
It's just a filter bro, I have a limited time on earth and I'd rather be spending it reading acclaimed, quality fiction. And "classics" are kind of what I meant by "literary", to me it's just literary fiction that has survived the test of time.
