Pale Fire and Ada or Ardour are both markedly better than Lolita.

Lolita, Infinite Jest, and Catcher and the Rye are all really great. Catch-22 and Great Gatsby are worth reading, but the books are a little overhyped. Moby Dick was torture for me. Haven't rrad the others. I think this list is good if you don't know what you want to read. Following this list will keep you from wasting your time. If you are sort of a novice, you shouldn't read any pomo fiction for now. I personally think Stienbeck is a great entry point into taking reading more seriously, but a lot of people find him boring :(

Can anyone speak to the quality of this chart? I've read a few (Exorcist, Haunting of Hill House; currently reading Ghost Story) that have been pretty good but I regularly see Heart Shaped Box and A Head Full of Ghosts getting slammed on here. Is it just the modern ones that suck? I hated Heart Shaped Box

>> No.22341621

>>22341483

I can only speak on what I've read:

The Monk = Absolute Masterpiece
Poe = Pretty much all of it is wonderful
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde = Great, but not really the horror everyone seems to think it is.
Picture of Dorian Gray = Great, Gay, not spooky
Ambrose Bierce = Hit and miss for me
Turn of the Screw = Loved it, not really spooky on the page, but very creepy to think about
Clark Ashton Smith = Some of it was OK, more weird fiction than horror
The Willows = Pretty good
Lovecraft = Hit and miss, but when it hits, it hits
Robert Aickman = Haven't read that collection, but I like his stuff
The Shining = meh
Songs of Dead Dreamer/Grimscribe = Lit loves this collection, I thought there were some good ones, but mostly I didn't like it
Brian Evenson = pretty bad imo, maybe you can see a pattern here
House of Leaves = Fun
