Garnett Sisters...
McDuff Bros...
MacAndrew Masters...
P&V Chads...
Avsey Ubermensch...
(((Katz))) Chosen...

Which is officially the /lit/ Definitive Edition?

McDuff, Avsey are generally good
Garnett and Katz have better prose and flow if you prefer that (Garnett's reputation doesn't help her, Katz is goated)
P&V are turthful to the original but read like shit
Pick your poison
I dunno about MacAndrew.

P&V reads like a pajeet trying to do ESL.
fuck off with your unreadable prose.

P&V reads like Dostoy in the original Russian. If you prefer Garnett or Averys flowery disneymarvel remakes, its because you dont understand Dostoy

What’s with the garnett cult on /lit/? Contrarians? Poor and can only afford public domain works? Trolls? She is culturally important but as a translator she’s been surpassed by everyone after her.

>> No.22318198

>>22318130
she's been the standard for over 100 years. nearly everyone that has read russian lit in english for the last 100 years has read garnett, for better or worse. so when you discuss or read analysis or criticism of these works that has been written over the last 100 years, everyone was basing their thoughts on that same shared experience.
sure some newer translations are more literal, or try to keep russian dialect and quirks intact, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i don't think any translation is going to be perfect.

Someone else posted this on another thread, can anyone confirm?

there are many cases where the english reader has to stop and reread sentences, or stumbles over awkward phrasing which is distracting and takes the reader out of the book. it might be more literal, but it reads like total shit in english. that's why a translation like avsey or the matlaw which updated and fixed garnetts find a good middle ground. or maybe this new katz one but i haven't read it myself.

yes this is correct

taken from this. it's worth reading if you are considering reading some russian lit.
