I lost my copy of the Constance Garnett version a few weeks ago and ended up buying another copy today due to wanting to read it not on a screen. However the only translations barnes and noble had was the P&V I picked it up and holy shit. Their translation just reads so much better than Garnett’s I’m only about near 3 quarters through (I’m at the preliminary investigation book) but I may just finish my first read through with p&v and not even bother with Garnett at all even the audiobooks. I’ve heard so many bad things about p&v but I feel the contrary should be the case. God I love this book

It’s not like she’s unreadable I just find her dry especially comparing her with p&v. I don’t know any Russian so I can’t comment on accuracy.

I read Crime and Punishment with her version and I found it good.
A little dry here and there, but I read "Memoirs of the dead house" last month too and it seems that's just how Dostoyevsky is.

what i posted actually is the constance translation i was just using the first cover i could find on google, picrel is what i actually picked up and IS the p&v version, you should read it man it's my first venture into dostoevsky and like i said i'm only about 3 quarters the way through but its possibly the greatest thing i've ever read outside of what i believe is divinely inspired mythology, but definitely the best novel i've ever read.

What did you like about McDuff? I read his translations of C&P and TBK and didn't think they were good at all. No that they were hard to read, but it felt really unnatural and I definitely felt like he could have done a better job and it was apparent that I was reading a translation. The best translations are the ones which don't feel like translations.

I can agree that it does sometimes feel too much like reading a translation, but I find him very pleasant to read and very flowing, not what I'd call unnatural at all. My only complaint is that it does certainly feel like a Scottishman translating a Russian novel. Otherwise it's perfectly readable and pleasant. Avsey's translation of The Idiot was probably the best Dosto translation I've read yet, but I haven't yet explored his BK translation so I can't comment on it.
