DFW was very narcissistic, that’s a pretty open secret. Not entirely in a pathological sense but in the deeply neurotic sense that makes him a bit insufferable. What Orson Welles said about Woody Allen’s arrogance and timidity applied to DFW too — DFW’s entire corpus is therapeutic too. His writing style is a self-conscious parody of his own pretentiousness, his desire is to be accepted at his lowest point constantly by others. After his book tours he arrogantly gloated about how much “audience pussy” he got, and on the surface that’s quite difficult to square with the entirely timid, self-effacing and self-deprecating personality you see in the interviews, but really they are one and the same; his philandering was this appearance and manifestation of this intense vulnerability and need for his “inner child” to be constantly accepted by others. And of course what makes him even more insufferable is that he knows all this about himself, parodies it in his novels and does it anyway, and then lectures about sincerity despite being (or rather because he is) at several protective ironic self-conscious removes from himself.

It is because it is unedited and he knew how these interviews worked, he is apologizing to the crew because they would have to try and edit down the interview into 5 or 10 minutes of nice clear and concise discussion. This is also why you can not hear the interviewer very well, they will rewrite the questions to suit the the clear and concise answers they edit out of the whole mess, then they will record her part separate and edit everything together.

I have no idea, it is not common for unedited interviews to get released in general. Wallace was very aware that his roundabout way was a nightmare for the crew when it came time to edit and that is actually what he is apologizing for. You can see the edits in many interviews if you know what to watch for, cutting to a reaction shot of the interviewer is the most common and why we sometimes get a few seconds of a closeup on the interviewer considering what is being said, they are covering up the discontinuity between the video and audio.

This is really terrible, his attempts to write in a conversational style fail spectacularly and give it the overall tone of a 4chan retard trying to argue his way out of a hole he dug himself into. It is filled with useless interjections of banter with himself which he tries to disguise as banter with the reader leaving it needlessly difficult to parse and irritating to read.
