Latin American countries do better under somewhat authoritarian right-wing leaders. Right-wing, because a relatively free market is how you make a poor economy grow (even Marx liked capitalism for these reasons, and said communism should rise in already developed nations instead), and harsh criminal laws are how you make a naturally unruly population of thieves and lazy tramps behave properly; slightly authoritarian, because otherwise you can't do anything whatsoever, it will all be blocked by the parliament, as populist deputies are seen as heroes by the 87iq population whenever they stand up against unpopular measures, such as realistic pension reforms, sensible fiscal policies, selling of state-owned companies which have been shown to be unproductive etc.
Anything else, including non-authoritarian right-wing governments, ends up in corruption, trash, and levels of violence which are simply unimaginable for anyone living in the first world, and even for people like myself, who live in Latin America, but in a good neighborhood.
The only reason left-wingers here win elections is welfare. The only one.

With time, everyone will be forced to recognize the absolute failure of things such as "humane" criminal laws, third-world democracy, giving 87iq people the right to vote, affirmative action, etc. etc. Those who don't recognize this will become failed states, and be humiliated by their neighbors in war and commerce, until they recognize it.

I enjoyed everything up to Death in the Andes, even though his best books by far came in the 60s and 70s. His three first books (The time of the hero, The green house, Conversation in the cathedral) are some of the best three debut books ever imo.
