This. The Vinaya Pitaka is more a legal text for the governance of monasteries than a book of religious philosophy. If you're new to Buddhist religious texts you should probably start with the Sutta Pitaka.

You think this is basic but we're living in a world where we are increasingly having to tell the "grass is green" over and over again, making this kind of text more relevant than ever in a sense.
Also, if they are right in their cyclic view of the world, there is no abject thing that has not happened before.
I think the problem with OP is that he has an expectation about what a religious text should be and what it should cover.
He thinks religious people live in the Barbie's World, so he's expecting the vanilla version he's used to see in the mainstream media, and is caught off guard when he sees the description of sexual positions, food and garments that should be allowed.

Another contextual bit here is that most Buddhist literature was written by monks and for monks. A decent monastery will be more disciplined than the finest army, they just never "do" anything. So to that end in some Buddhist literature you get a proliferation of these seemingly needlessly thorough repetitive numerical lists as a kind of meditative practice. It's almost like visualizing an object from every possible direction, and then writing that out. There's probably somewhere in the vinaya a list of 136 inappropriate forms of sexual contact, of which maybe 40 are with men, 60 with women, and the remainder with ghosts, demons, animals, etc. And if you were horny maybe you'd read through this and recite it to yourself for the whole day until you were bored of the urge. Not exactly the most interesting philosophical or scriptural content, but that's what it is.
